Islamabad HC transfers remaining cases against Nawaz Sharif

The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday ordered to transfer pending corruption cases - Al-Azizia and Flagship Investment- involving former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, to another court.A two-member bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb ordered the transfer of the cases to a different court following a plea filed by Sharif's legal counsel requesting the court to transfer the two cases from one Accountability Court to another, reported The Dawn.The Sharif family had also filed an appeal against their convictions in connection to the Avenfield reference case.The court was adjourned till Wednesday without hearing Captain (retired) Safdar Awan's plea against his conviction in the Avenfield reference. Two minor girls leave shelter home, FIR lodged

An FIR was today lodged after two minor girls went out of a shelter home for girls in Khunti district, police said today. The authorities of Nari Niketan, a shelter home for girls today lodged an FIR at Mahila police station after two minor girls left the home situated at Sahyog village in the district yesterday morning, Officer-in-charge of the police station, Meera Singh said. The two girls have not returned to the home, the police said, adding that a hunt has been launched to trace them.

Guj: Body of 3-year-old girl with injury marks found

The body of an unidentified girl, about three years old, was found dumped at an isolated place in Pandesara locality in Surat city of Gujarat today, police said. The body had injury marks, and it was likely that the girl was killed and then dumped at the spot, said Deputy Commissioner of Police B R Pandor. Police are waiting for autopsy report, he added. Notably, the body of a nine-year-old girl had been found from the same locality in April this year. The girl had been sexually assaulted and then killed, as per the autopsy report. Police had said that both the girl and her mother were murdered by a person who had brought them here as bonded labourers. The alleged culprit was subsequently arrested.

Two arrested for waylaying agency staff

Two men, who allegedly robbed employees of an agency, which looks after cash deposits in ATMs, of Rs 22 lakhs have been arrested, police said today. A press release from the police said the staff of Writer Safeguard Private Limited - M Praveen Kumar and M Hari Krishna - were carrying the cash to deposit it in an ATM on August 4 when they were waylaid and robbed of the money. Based on a complaint, a police team was formed and investigations revealed an insider job. The police detained an employee of the agency, Arunjee Naveen and he confessed to have passed on information to his friend Prasad and he committed the robbery.

Teenaged lover slits girl's throat, flees

A 16-year-old girl, doing her intermediate, was murdered allegedly by her teenaged lover here this evening, police said. The 18-year-old boy, who had known the girl for the past two years, got angry when she began avoiding him and he decided to kill her, they said. He asked the girl to meet him at around 6.30 pm and attacked her with a blade before slitting her throat, the police said, adding that the accused fled after committing the crime.

2 arrested for duping job seekers with fake promises of jobs in railways

Two men were arrested for allegedly cheating people on the pretext of providing them jobs in railways, police said today. The accused - Ajeet Singh (30) and Vimal Kumar (29) - were arrested near Food Corporation of India (FCI) building on Sansad Marg yesterday, they added. The arrests were made after the police received complaints that Singh lured innocent people with placement in railways under "ministry quota". He gave fake appointment letters in lieu of money, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajit Kumar Singla said. On a tip-off, police arrested both the accused and recovered fake appointment letters of railways and FCI from their possession. A pendrive having formats of appointment letters was also recovered. During interrogation, they revealed having agents in Kolkata and north India. The agents used to lure innocent job seekers. HC holds man guilty of raping minor, says initial DNA report incorrect

The Delhi High Court today convicted a man for raping an eight-year-old girl, saying the trial court acquitted him due to erroneous view of the law and a "patently illegal" approach in dealing with the evidence. While setting aside the man's acquittal in the five-year-old case, a bench of justices Vipin Sanghi and P S Teji also noted that the initial DNA report given in the case by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) at Rohini here was incorrect and possibly tampered with and ordered a CBI probe into the functioning of the facility. The court fixed August 10 for hearing arguments on quantum of sentence by the convict's counsel Mallika Parmar and Delhi Police's advocate Rajesh Mahajan. Gang of vehicle battery thieves busted, 10 held: Cops

The Gautam Buddh Nagar police has arrested ten persons, allegedly involved in stealing batteries from the vehicles parked along the Eastern Peripheral Highway near here. The arrested accused also included three scrap dealers who used to buy the stolen batteries and sell them cheap, the police said today. "As many as 22 batteries besides three firearms, knives, and over six kg of cannabis were also seized from them," Noida (Rural) Superintendent of Police Aashish Shrivastava told reporters here. Three cars, including a premium sedan and two SUVs, were also impounded from them, he said. The police made the arrests, while working on a complaint received on Sunday, he said. Newly appointed Acting Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court Rajiv Sharma today said he would work towards speedy disposal of pending cases such as those related to pension, salaries and service. 3 arrested for killing man in outer Delhi

Three men were arrested for allegedly killing a car driver with an intention to loot his car to earn easy money and burning his body to conceal his identity, the police said today. The accused were identified as Vipin Kumar (20), Kartar (22) and Abhishek Dahiya (20), they added. On July 20, based on a tip off, a trap was laid near a clinic in Karala where the three men suspected to be involved in the murder were apprehended. During interrogation, the accused revealed that on June 1, they had called one Aryan, a resident of Ladrawan village in Karala with an intention to kill him. When Aryan reached Karala, he was taken to a nearby farmhouse where the trio injected him with an anesthetic drug and he became unconscious. They took him to an isolated area between Rohini Sector 34 and Sector 29 and covered his body with garbage. The accused later poured petrol on his body and burnt it to destroy evidence. Woman gang raped, robbed; two arrested

A woman was allegedly gang raped in front of her husband in Vadodara city of Gujarat last night, police today said. Two persons were arrested in the case. Jaydip Patel, Satyam Pandey and Ajay Patel accosted the woman and her husband in a deserted area in Manjalpur locality late last night, said a local police official. Jaydip Patel and Satyam Pandey allegedly raped the woman. Later the three of them robbed her and her husband, the official said. The accused allegedly snatched away the woman's gold earring worth Rs 15,000, two mobile phones and Rs 1,000 from them. Police today arrested Jaydip Patel and Satyam Pandey under IPC sections 376(D) (gang rape), 392 (robbery) as well as under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as the couple belongs to a tribal community. Ajay Patel, the third accused, is yet to be traced, police said.

Sibal describes lowering of Jus Joseph's seniority as "black day"

Senior Congress leader and former Law Minister Kapil Sibal said today that lowering the seniority of Justice K M Joseph during his elevation to the Supreme Court will be marked as a "black day" in the court's history and the judiciary needs to do some soul searching. SHRC question police for detaining man under PSA for nearly 3 yrs

The Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has raised questions over the manner police applied the Public Safety Act (PSA), a law which provides for preventive detention of a person without trial for six months to one year, in case of a man from Bandipora who stayed under detention for nearly three years. Hearing an application on the detention of Assadullah Parray of Hajin in Bandipora district, SHRC Chairman Justice (retd) Bilal Nazki said the report filed by SSP Bandipora made an "interesting reading". According to the report, Parray's detention under the PSA was quashed by the High Court on 16 December 2017 but he was arrested again under various FIRs registered against him in 2016. He was released on bail by courts in these cases but was arrested again on January 23, 2018, in connection with another FIR of 2017. He got bail in this case on February 9 this year. According to the report, the police claimed that after his release, Parray's activities were monitored .
