SC dismisses plea seeking guidelines for conduct of cesarean deliveries

The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea seeking the laying down of guidelines on how the procedure for cesarean deliveries has to be conducted in hospitals, saying the petition was an abuse of process of law. A bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi also slapped a cost of Rs 25,000 on the petitioner and directed him to deposit the amount within four weeks with the Supreme Court Bar Association. "What is that you want? How much cost will you pay, you tell us? You want the court to lay down guidelines as to how cesarean deliveries has to be done? Is it a PIL (Public Interest Litigation)," the bench, comprising justices R Banumathi and Navin Sinha, said. "Having perused the PIL, we are of the view that the same is an abuse of process of law," the bench added. The petition was filed by Reepak Kansal, who had alleged "flagrant violations and abuse of health norms" due to a lack of policy, and claimed that several private hospitals and maternity homes often conduct unnecessary C-section ...

Eight held for running fake job racket in Hyderabad

: Eight people belonging to two gangs were arrested on the charge of running a fake job racket here and cheating around 150 unemployed youth by promising employment in central and state government departments, police said. Acting on information, police arrested the eight people yesterday and found they had indulged in cheating job-seekers after taking advance between Rs one lakh and Rs 10 lakh from each candidate. The gang had issued fake appointment orders and training letters to the youth, a police release said adding Rs 24lakh was seized from them. The modus operandi of the gang was to tell unemployed youth through their friends and relatives about jobs in various departments including railways, revenue, education and Telangana electricity transmission company among others and demanded between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 25 lakh from candidates to secure positions in them, it said. Two men open fire in bid to rob jeweller, caught by people

Two men, who allegedly opend fire in a bid to rob a jeweller at Dombivli in the district, were caught by people and handed over to the police, an officer said today. The accused- Gopal Yadav (21) and Vikas Singh (20)- were later placed under arrest for the incident that took place late last night, the officer from Tilak Nagar police station said. According to police, the jeweller was going home after closing the shop at 10 pm when the accused came there and opened fire with the intention of robbing him of his belongings. The jeweller's assistant, who was with him, raised an alarm. Hearing him, people in the neighbourhood caught the duo and thrashed them. They later handed over the accused to the police. The duo was booked under sections 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 307 (attempt to murder), 341 (wrongful restraint), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and the Arms Act. Weinstein gets approval to disclose tape accuser's emails

Harvey Weinstein's attorneys were granted permission by a bankruptcy judge to include 40 emails from an anonymous rape accuser in a motion to dismiss his criminal case. Judge Mary Walrath allowed Weinstein's lawyers to use the emails, provided that the alleged victim's name and initials are not used in the motion, reported Variety. Weinstein's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, argued that the emails would show that the Hollywood producer had a friendly, long-term relationship with the woman, lasting for four years after the alleged rape occurred in 2013. "They are endearing, intimate, pleasant, flattering, friendly emails between her and Mr Weinstein. If the grand jury had these emails, they would not have indicted," Brafman said. Brafman asked permission to refer to the woman by her initials, which he repeatedly stated are "J M". Man gets 7 years rigorous imprisonment for raping minor

A 28-year-old man from Mumbra in the district has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by a special court here for raping a minor in 2015. Special POCSO court judge P P Jadhav recently convicted Shabbir Mulani and also slapped a fine of Rs 30,000 on him. He was found guilty under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 312 (causing miscarriage), and also under section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused is a contractor in the business of making imitation jewellery and used to give the contract of making jewellery to women in the locality. Prosecutor Vivek G Kadu, who appeared for the prosecution, told the court that the victim who resided in the vicinity used to collect material from Mulani's unit for the assembly of jewellery. On May 20, 2015 the accused called the victim, who was 17 years old then, to his unit for packing the jewellery. When she came, he sexually assaulted her, the prosecution said. Manipur fake encounter: Army Major, 2 police personnel booked

Ghaziabad: Lawyers go on strike over alleged beating of colleague by police

Lawyers of a Ghaziabad court went on a strike today over the alleged beating of their colleague by police following an argument between the advocate and an eatery owner. Eatery owner Anil Mishra alleged that last night three customers, including lawyer Dal Chand Gautam, abused his staff, claiming that there was a delay in serving food. He alleged that they later thrashed him and he received a head injury. An FIR was registered in connection with the matter, said Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna. Pak court stays execution of Sufi Singer Amjad Sabri's Killer

A court in Pakistan today stayed the execution of an accused and suspended the death penalty given to him by a military court in the assassination of Amjad Sabri, one of the country's finest Sufi Qawwals. Sabri, 45, was travelling in a car in Karachi's congested Liquatabad 10 area when two motorcycle-borne gunmen shot him in the head in a targeted terror attack on June 22, 2016. In April, Pakistan Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa had approved death penalty for 10 terrorists including those who shot dead Sabri. Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court Waqar Ahmed Seth suspended the death sentence of Arish, who was convicted by the military court for killing Sabri. 7 arrested for cyber theft in Delhi

Seven people were arrested for allegedly duping more than hundred people by masquerading as bank employees and collecting their bank details, police said today. The accused were identified as Majer Sing (29), Varinder Singh (25), Abhishek Sharma (25), Mohammad Salim (28), Mohammad Abdul Rahim (33), Mohammad Mumtaz Ansari (26) and Jagannath Mandal (45), they said. On July 10, a complaint was filed by Prabeer Kumar Basu alleging that he had received a call two days ago by a person who asked him for his card details and pretended to be an employee of the State Bank of India. Subsequently, Rs 50,000 was deducted from his SBI account, said Ajit Kumar Singla, the additional commissioner of police (crime). Three persons were arrested from Punjab, while another was nabbed from Jharkhand's Jamtara district. 4 held for selling car, filing fake FIR to mislead owner

Four men were arrested for allegedly selling a car and filing a fake FIR to mislead the vehicle's owner, police said today. The accused identified as Deepak (22), Gautam (22), Mukesh (24) and Lalit (23) were arrested on charges of criminal breach of trust, they added. A complained was filed by one Karan Singh alleging that on June 25, his nephew Deepak and his friend Gautam took his car for repair work in a workshop in Mehrauli, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Romil Baaniya said. Later, they did not return with the same vehicle. When he asked about the car, Deepak told him that it had been stolen and he had filed an online FIR in connection with it, the DCP said. During investigation, the CCTV footage of the workshop was scanned and it was found that the vehicle was taken out from the workshop ten minutes after being taken there, he said. Businessman robber of Rs 70 lakh in west Delhi

A 40-year-old businessman was robbed of Rs 70 lakh allegedly by three men at gunpoint today, police said. The victim, Kashish Bansal, a resident of Rohini was travelling to Gurgaon in his car, when three men riding a motorcycle intercepted it in west Delhi's Naraina, they said. At gunpoint, they took the cash kept in the dicky of his car, the police said.
