Court to consider ED's charge sheet in chopper scam tomorrow

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today told a Delhi court that it has enough evidence to prosecute former AgustaWestland and Finmeccanica directors Giuseppe Orsi and Bruno Spagnolini, and others for alleged money laundering in the VVIP chopper case. Special Judge Arvind Kumar reserved for tomorrow the order on whether to take cognisance on the charge sheet filed by special public prosecutor N K Matta, and summon Orsi, Spagnolini and others as accused in the case. In the charge sheet, the ED said it had recorded unimpeachable evidence supporting the allegations against all the accused persons. The probe agency had on July 18 filed a supplementary charge sheet, through advocate Yashu Khurana, accusing Orsi, Spagnolini and ex-IAF chief S P Tyagi, besides others, of money laundering in the case. PNB case: Choksi seeks cancellation of NBW, cites mob lynching fear

Gitanjali Gems owner Mehul Choksi, key accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, on Monday moved the Prevention of Money Laundering Act Court seeking cancellation of a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him.Choksi filed the application, under Section 70(2) of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).The non-bailable warrant was issued against him after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in June filed two separate applications in a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Mumbai against Nirav and Choksi under Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance, 2018.According to the application, Choksi is a "law abiding citizen" and "never shied away from the investigation or the investigating agencies and duly responded to all the communications received by him from the investigating agencies."It states that due to ill health, Choksi left for abroad for a regular health checkup."Subsequently, his passport was revoked which made him unable to travel abroad. Strong advisories issued to all state govt: Rijiju on lynching cases

Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Monday said that the Centre has issued strong advisories to all state governments in connection with recent lynching cases."Indian Government has sent strong advisories to all state governments. Lynching issue has been taken up very seriously; no leniency in terms of action will be there," Rijiju told media here."We want all the state government to act on it (lynching case). 2 killed, 2 injured after portion of house collapses in UP

Two people of a family were killed and two others injured when a portion of their house collapsed in Kairana town of Shamli district today, officials said. The deceased were identified as Nazma (45) and her son Mursaleem (13), said Subdivisional Magistrate Surjit Singh. Muzaffarpur rapes: Dog squad roped in for probe

WB Assembly amends Act to curb use of mobile phones in correctional homes

Faced with the menace of "uncontrolled" use of cell phones in correctional homes by inmates, the West Bengal government today amended an Act to make the offence punishable by a three-year prison term. The Assembly passed the West Bengal Correctional Services Amendment Bill, 2018, today to make the possession or use of any wireless communication device or its components like SIM card, memory card, battery or charger, a crime punishable by up to three years in jail. The wireless communication device would include mobile phone, personal computer, wifi, tablet, laptop or palmtop. The three-year sentence would be served by the prisoner after completing the one he/she is already serving, the amended Act stated. The amendment also makes officers and other employees of correctional homes liable for wilfully participating or conniving in entry or despatch of any wireless communication device from the jails and would face a prison term of up to three years or with fine up to Rs 3,000 or both, .

HC grants bail to Kerala priest accused in rape case

The Kerala High Court today granted bail to a Christian priest arrested for allegedly abusing a married woman in Pathanamthitta district. Johnson V Mathew, a counsellor of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church, was arrested from Kozhencherry in the district on July 13. He was charged under Section 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code. Johnson Mathew, the third accused in the rape case, involving three more priests of the church, moved the high court seeking bail after a magistrate court in Thiruvalla had turned down his plea. Granting bail, Justice Rajavijayaraghavan directed the priest to surrender his passport, cooperate in the investigation and not to enter the limits of the police station where the victim resides. The Crime Branch probing the case had earlier arrested Job Mathew, the vicar of a local church. Court grants anticipatory bail to Chidambaram in Aircel-Maxis case

A court here today granted protection from arrest till August 7 to former Union minister P Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis case filed by the CBI. Special CBI Judge O P Saini granted the relief to the Congress leader after a plea was moved by him in the morning, seeking anticipatory bail in the case. The court, meanwhile, granted three weeks to CBI to file a detailed reply to Chidambaram's application and directed the agency not to take any coercive action against him till that time. The former finance minister told the court that he had apprehensions that the CBI might arrest him in the case. "Nothing is preventing them (CBI) from arresting me (Chidambaram) in the case. I am apprehending arrest in the current matter. They can arrest me as a matter of law. I am made an accused for nothing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, said. BJP leader, senior cop arrested in APSC scam

Assam Police have arrested three persons, including a BJP leader and a senior police official for trying to influence the probe into the cash-for-job scam which has rocked the state, an official said today. Vice-president of ruling BJP's Darrang unit Sailen Sarma Barua, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) of Duliajan Kabita Das and businessman Surajit Chaudhury were held last night, Dibrugarh district superintendent of police Gautam Bora said. "We have arrested DSP Kabita Das last night. She has already been taken to Guwahati and is being interrogated," Bora said. "Two more persons were arrested from Darrang and Guwahati. Panel explores justifiable options for stressed power projects of Tata, Essar, Adani

A three member panel constituted by the Gujarat government will meet stakeholders, including Tata, Adani and Essar, on Saturday in Mumbai to explore legal and commercial options for their three stressed power projects, according to a source. The committee, which has former Supreme Court Justice R K Agrawal, former RBI Deputy Governor S S Mundra and former Chairman of Central Electricity Regulatory Commission Pramod Deo on its board, met power developers as well as officials of procurer states, including Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana yesterday. SBI Capital Markets and state-run power giant NTPC are assisting the panel to submit its report to the state government within a period of two month. The panel was set up earlier this year. 10 held after allegations of sexual exploitation at shelter home in Bihar; Oppn demands CBI probe

A girl of a government-funded shelter home here has alleged that one of her fellow inmates was beaten to death and buried at the premises of the facility, and several were raped. Sexual exploitation of girls lodged at the shelter home in Bihar had come to light in a social audit by a Mumbai-based institute, following which the state social welfare department lodged an FIR in this connection last month and 10 people were arrested. Following the shelter home inmate's claim that a girl was killed, the Bihar Police dug up the grounds of the facility, but are yet to find the body. Singrauli:12 arrested for lynching mentally-ill woman

In yet another case of mob lynching, 12 people have been arrested for allegedly beating an unstable woman to death in Madhya Pradesh's Singrauli on suspicion of being a child-lifter.The unidentified woman, who was aged between 25 - 30 years, was killed on the night of July 19.Investigating officer, Narendra Raghuvanshi said that they received a complaint that a body of a woman was found in a drain of a nursery near the forest area. The case has been registered in Morwa police station regarding the same."We received an information on July 20 that a body of a woman was found in a drain in a nursery. She was not looking mentally stable. Man gets 12 years in jail for raping minor

A special court here sentenced a man to 12 years of imprisonment for raping a minor girl. The special judge of (POCSO) court on Friday sentenced Lalruatsanga of Chawlhhmun locality in Aizawl to 12 years of imprisonment for raping the girl last year. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. It also instructed the Aizawl Legal Services Authority to provide compensation to the victim under the provisions of Mizoram Victims of Crime Compensation Scheme, 2011.

Maha constable shoots dead history-sheeter resisting arrest

A history-sheeter was today shot dead in neighbouring Palghar district after he allegedly resisted arrest and attacked a police constable with a knife, a senior official said. Govind Rana was spotted today afternoon in Tulinj area in Nallasopara township of Palghar district, about 60 kilometres from here, by a local Crime Branch team which asked him to surrender, Manjunath Singe, Superintendent of Police, Palghar told PTI. Rana, however, attacked constable Mangesh Sakpal with a knife following which the latter opened fire from his service revolver, Singe informed.
