A man, seeking to pass himself of as a Lt Colonel, tried to enter the Sena Bhavan along with his wife, his wife's brother, and a driver but was caught, police said. All four are being questioned.

Guj HC judge recuses himself from Hardik's discharge plea hearing

Justice R P Dholaria of the Gujarat High Court today recused himself from the hearing of Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel's discharge application in a sedition case lodged in 2015. When the discharge plea came up for the hearing, Justice Dholaria said, "Not before me." The case would now be assigned to another judge. Hardik had approached the high court in April this year after a lower court in February rejected his plea seeking discharge from the sedition case, lodged by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch against him in connection with the violence during the Patidar quota agitation in August 2015. In April, when the case came up before Justice Z K Saiyad, the judge issued a notice to the state government. After Saiyad's retirement, the matter was assigned to Justice Dholaria. Hardik Patel, convener of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), has sought discharge on the ground that there was no concrete evidence against him. HC dismisses as infructuous pleas by Jaya, Sasikala in I-T case

The Madras High Court today dismissed as infructuous four petitions filed by the then chief minister J Jayalalithaa, her associate V K Sasikala and a firm in 2004 seeking to quash Income Tax proceedings against them in a lower court in view of the department withdrawing them in 2015. Justice M Nirmal Kumar noted that the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court (economic offences) had allowed a plea by the department's Special Public Prosecutor seeking withdrawal of action against the petitioners after acceptance of compounding pleas filed by the petitioners. The matter related to the prosecution initiated by the I-T Department in 1997 against Jayalalithaa and Sasikala and Sasi Enterprises in which they were partners over filing of income tax returns for 1993-94. The proceedings were withdrawn by the department in January, 2015 after Jayalalithaa and Sasikala together paid Rs 1.99 crore as compounding fee under the Income Tax Act for not filing annual tax returns. 4 get life imprisonment for rape, murder of teenage girl

A court in Seraikela-Kharswan district of Jharkhand today sentenced four people to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a teenage girl in Chandil sub-division in 2011. The court of Additional District and Session Judge III sentenced Shankar Singh alias Budha, Ramesh Singh, Angad Pramanik alias Hablu and Shivcharan Singh to life imprisonment and also slapped a fine of Rs 15,000 each on them, Public Prosecutor Rajeev Singh said. The public prosecutor said in the FIR, it was stated that on October 20, 2011, the four people had raped and killed the 16-year-old girl when she had gone to attend nature's call in Fadulgora village. The court ordered the four convicts to pay half of the fine amount to the parents of the victim and directed the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority to take initiative to pay compensation according to the Victims' Compensation Scheme.

Six arrested of robbing power grids at Dwarka

Delhi Police has arrested six people accused of armed robbery of under-construction power grids in the Dwarka area of southwest Delhi and decamping with electrical wires and other hardware worth lakhs of rupees. The inter-border gangs investigation squad of the Crime Branch arrested one of the accused, Sapan Dass, on the intervening night of July 10-11 from the Hauz Khas area here. Thereafter, on the next day, the Crime Branch team arrested Mohsin and Shanu Malik from their respective shops in the INA Market area and recovered most of the robbed electrical wire and hardware, police said in a statement. The remaining three accused -- Bharat, Sandeep and Raju -- were arrested on a production warrant as they had already been apprehended by Uttar Pradesh Police on June 24 after an encounter. Sebi fines individual Rs 5L in Ravi Kumar Distilleries IPO case

Sebi today imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on an individual for failing to provide requisite information sought by the regulator in a case related to alleged irregularities in the initial public offering (IPO) of Ravi Kumar Distilleries. In an order, Sebi said Laxminarayana Veeramallu Doosa failed to provide the requisite information to the regulator's investigating authority (IA) as sought by it through summons issued in January and June 2014 and also failed to appear before it. The information was sought regarding the alleged receipt of Rs 40 lakh by Doosa into his account from a firm -- S5 Trading -- and the subsequent transfer of the same amount to the account of his stock broker for trading in shares of Ravi Kumar Distilleries Ltd (RKDL) on the first day of the listing of the company. Mathura: Man plots nephew's kidnapping to escape wedding expenses

A three-year-old boy, kidnapped allegedly at the behest of his relatives who wanted to minimise wedding-related expenses, was recovered within 38 hours, the police said today. Aman was playing outside his maternal aunt's house in Pushp Vihar Colony here on Wednesday afternoon when he was kidnapped, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Babloo Kumar said, adding that he was recovered today from an isolated area near the Garud Govind temple following a tip off. Aman was kidnapped at the behest of his maternal aunt's husband, Suresh Kumar Chand, whose daughter is getting married today, the SSP said. Sharma hatched a plan to kidnap Aman, who had come from Ludhiana with his parents to attend the wedding, hoping that a pall of gloom would drastically cut down the number of guests, he added. Detailed probe underway in Raj cop's 'suicide'

The Rajasthan authorities have ordered a "detailed probe" into the alleged suicide of a police officer who shot himself with his service pistol, a senior police official said today. Inspector Virendra Singh, SHO of Shahpura police station had ended his life in his official quarter behind the police station last night. No suicide note was recovered from the SHO's quarter and the reason behind the incident is not clear yet. A detailed probe is on, IG Jaipur range Hemant Priyadarshi said. Singh's body was handed over to his family members after postmortem examination today, they said. Bhanwar Singh, who has been given the charge of the Shahpura police station, said that Singh shot himself with his pistol. The incident came to light when a staffer found him lying in a pool of blood. His funeral was conducted at his ancestral village in Ajmer district, the officer said. Singh's is survived by his wife and a daughter. His elder brother is a retired police officer.

Four imposters detained while trying to enter Sena Bhawan: Army

Four persons, including a woman, were detained while trying to enter the Sena Bhawan here this evening, with one of them wearing an Army uniform and posing as a RAW officer, said a senior Army official. The persons were identified as Amit Sharma, a resident of Ghaziabad, who was posing as Lt Col Abhimanyu Sharma, his wife Harjinder Kaur, a driver named Sonu Singh and an accomplice Sandeep Kumar who claimed to be the woman's brother but it was found to be fake, the Army official said. Sharma arrived in front of the Sena Bhawan at 5 pm and tried to gain entry. When asked for his I-card by the on-duty guard, he produced a fake ID Card from PMO, the official said. The guard got suspicious and asked a few more questions. When he noticed uneasiness in the suspect, the guard informed his seniors, the official added. Rs 3 crore in demonetised notes seized in Pune; 5 detained

Nearly Rs 3 crore in demonetised notes were seized from five people, one of them a Congress councillor from Ahmednagar district, police said today. According to the Khadak police station, Gajendra Abhang, a Congress corporator from the Sangamner Municipal Council, is one of the five people who were in Raviwar Peth area here to exchange the scrapped notes and were detained by cops last night. The others were identified as Vijay Shinde (38), Aditya Ghavan (25) and Navnath Bhandagale (28), all from Pune, and one Suraj Jagtap (40) from Satara district. "Acting on a tip-off, we detained all five people from Raviwar Peth area when they came to exchange the notes," said a senior official of the Khadak police station. 2 drug peddlers arrested with 2.5 kg ganja in Ghaziabad

Two suspected drug peddlers were arrested from Pratap Vihar area here and 2.5 kg of 'ganja' was seized from their possession, police said today. Rahul and Wahid were picked up near a Jal Nigam overhead tank in Pratap Vihar by Vijay Nagar police following a routine checking, SP (City) Akash Tomar said. The accused confessed to their crime and said they used to sell the contraband in small pouches for Rs 100-Rs 200, he said. Rs 1.34 crore compensation disbursed to 25 Jodhpur detainees

A compensation of Rs 1.34 crore was awarded today to 25 Sikhs from Amritsar who were arrested and kept in a Jodhpur prison after Operation Bluestar in 1984. Deputy Commissioner, Amritsar, Kamaldeep Singh Sangha disbursed the compensation in Amritsar to the 25 Sikhs or next of their kin. Sangha said that out of 25, few had died in the past and compensation was given to their legal heirs. The DC clarified that the amount disbursed today to the Jodhpur detainees was the fifty per cent share of the Central government and these people had already availed their remaining share from the state government. Over 350 people were arrested and detained in Jodhpur jail in the wake of Operation Bluestar, and were later released in three batches, between March 1989 and July 1991. Of these, 224 detainees had appealed for compensation in the lower court, alleging "wrongful detention and torture" but they failed to get any relief from the court in 2011. Flight attendant suicide: Anissia's in-laws to be questioned tomorrow

The in-laws of a female flight attendant, who allegedly committed suicide last week in south Delhi's Panchsheel Park, will be questioned tomorrow, the police said today. Anissia Batra, 39, who worked with a German airline, had jumped off the terrace of her residence on July 14. Her husband, Mayank Singhvi, was arrested on charges of dowry death. Heroin killed British rugby players in Sri Lanka: court

Two English amateur rugby players had taken heroin just before their deaths while in Sri Lanka, a court was told today as it ordered the arrest of those responsible for selling the narcotics. Concluding inquests into the deaths, Colombo Fort magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ruled that Thomas Howard, 25, died from heroin poisoning while Tom Baty,26, overdosed. Police had previously told the court that the duo had been sold highly contaminated heroin after they visited a night club in Colombo during a tour of the country in May. Both developed breathing difficulties after their night out. Howard died after admission to hospital while Baty died two days later. A judicial medical officer had told the court there were no external injuries on the bodies nor did they suffer any illnesses. ACB arrest 3 persons including asst engineer in bribery case

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today arrested three persons including an assistant engineer and a panchayat sevak while accepting bribe in Seraikela-Kharswan district, a senior ACB official said. The arrests were made on the basis of a complaint made by the mukhia, Rajnagar Panchayat, Sukurmani Oraon in this regard, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (ACB), Amar Kumar Pandey. 2 held in Delhi with over 4 kg heroin

Two suspected drug peddlers were arrested with over four kg heroin worth around Rs 16 crore from near Sector-18 Rohini Metro Station, the police said today. The police had yesterday learnt that two members of a drug cartel would come to supply a huge consignment to one of their Delhi-based contacts, Nasir, they said. A trap was laid near Sector-18 Rohini Metro Station, and the accused -- Binod Rajbongshi (40), a resident of Golaghat, Assam, and Riyazuddin (39), a resident of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, -- were nabbed, a police official said, adding on searching them 4.07 kg of heroin was recovered from them. Delhi HC sets aside penalty imposed on Kanhaiya by JNU, says order illegal

The Delhi High Court today termed "illegal, irrational and unsustainable" an order of JNU's appellate authority holding its former students union president Kanhaiya Kumar guilty of indiscipline and imposing a penalty on him in connection with a 2016 incident in which alleged anti-India slogans were raised at an event. Justice Siddharth Mridul set aside the July 4 office order of the varsity and said the court was of the prima-facie view that the decision was "unsustainable on innumerable counts", after which the counsel for the varsity submitted that they are recalling the decision. The court remanded the matter back to the appellate authority with a direction to conduct 'de novo' (afresh) proceedings in accordance with the law.
