Petrol pump row: BJD alleges Dharmendra Pradhan has links with crime syndicate in Odisha, demands resignation

The ruling BJD in Odisha alleged today that Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had links with the criminal syndicate in Odisha and demanded his resignation over the allocation of a petrol pump to a gangster's family in the state. A day after the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) demanded a CBI probe into the matter, BJD's Rajya Sabha member and spokesperson Pratap Keshari Deb claimed, "The nexus between Pradhan and the criminal syndicate in Odisha is becoming clear. Therefore, he should resign on moral grounds." He told reporters here that the petrol pump was allocated to the family of history-sheeter Syed Usman Ali in Paradip in 2014 in violation of rules. Since the petrol pump falls under the Paradip port and is owned by the IOCL, there are different rules of allocation and the owner of the petrol pump did not meet the eligibility criteria, he said. Deb also questioned the IOCL's demand for a CBI probe when the state government had already ordered a crime branch ...

The alleged leader of a jihadist cell was handed a 20-year term with forced labour today in Senegal's largest terror-related trial, which also saw 14 suspects acquitted. A Dakar court handed the term to Makhtar Diokhane, described as the ringleader of a group that planned to wage jihadism in West Africa, while Alioune Ndao, who had been accused of acting as coordinator, received a suspended one-month sentence. The heavily-guarded proceedings, which started on April 9, are believed to have been the first mass prosecution for alleged terror activities in Senegal. The majority-Muslim West African state has so far escaped major terror attacks. The 29 suspects, three of them women, were accused of criminal conspiracy related to financing a terror group, money laundering, acts of terrorism and funding terrorism. Most were arrested in 2015 in Senegal, which prosecutors said was their planned springboard to foment terrorism in neighbouring countries as well. Diokhane, 31, was found guilty of .

Spain drops international arrest warrants for Puigdemont, other Catalans

A Spanish judge today dropped European and international arrest warrants for deposed Catalan president Carles Puigdemont and other separatist leaders who fled abroad, the Supreme Court said, which means they no longer face extradition. This means that Puigdemont, who is currently in Germany awaiting extradition proceedings, and five other Catalans who are scattered in Scotland, Belgium and Switzerland, are free to move from country to country. The Spanish arrest warrant, however, remains open which means they will be detained if they try to come back. Puigdemont is one of 13 separatist leaders accused of the most serious charge rebellion over their role in Catalonia's failed secession bid last October. Nine are in custody in Spain awaiting trial. Of those currently abroad, Puigdemont ...
