Four knives, as many sim cards and a mobile phone set were recovered as the authorities today carried out searches in the Deoria district jail where former MP Atiq Ahmad is one of the inmates, officials said today. In nearly three hours of searches, each barrack including that of Ahmad was searched, the official said. Four pen drives were recovered from Ahmad's barrack while four SIM cards, a mobile phone set and four vegetable cutting knives were recovered from others, Superintendent of Police, Deoria, Rohan P Kanay said. Around 6 am, over 300 policemen led by District Magistrate Sujit Kumar and SP Kanay conducted searches at Deoria district jail, according to officials. All the Circle Officers, and district administration officials were present during the searches.
Congress leader P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram were today named as accused in a charge sheet filed by the CBI in the Aircel-Maxis deal case in which they have been charged for alleged criminal conspiracy and misconduct. The agency filed its supplementary charge sheet before special CBI judge O P Saini who fixed it for consideration on July 31. Besides Chidambaram and Karti, the CBI named 10 individuals, including public servants, and six companies as accused in the case. The charge sheet was filed for the alleged offences of criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), public servant taking illegal gratification, punishment for abetting this offence and public servant committing criminal misconduct under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Sending out a strong message, Mumbai's civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a hefty fine of Rs 1 lakh per day on a contractor for not maintaining a road in the megacity. Till now, the maximum penalty for shoddy work or delay was up to Rs 5,000 per day for the tender-winning contractors. "The contract work of the repair of Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road was awarded to the contractor prior to the monsoon," a civic official said. "The contract included improvement of the 3-km-long stretch from Shivaji Nagar junction to Vasant Road Naik Marg, but contractor failed to deliver, which resulted in inconvenience to the motorists," he said. The official said that during the review of the work of the road department of the civic body, "it was found that contractor failed to deliver" and therefore, his firm was ordered to pay a fine of Rs one lakh per day starting from yesterday. A girl student of city-based University of Hyderabad allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the 14th floor of a residential apartment complex here today, police said. The Delhi High Court today said there was no public interest in a plea moved by 11 unsuccessful law aspirants seeking that Delhi University's LLB entrance test be held again as widespread cheating allegedly took place at some exam centres. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar, however, said there was only private interest in the matter as the candidates had taken the entrance exam. The court directed that the petition be deregistered as a PIL and be listed before an appropriate bench on July 23. The petition, filed through advocate Abhishek Kumar Choudhary, sought cancellation of the result declared on July 11 and fresh conduct of the the exam, alleging improper management of the test leading to widespread cheating at some centres. If the entire exam cannot be held again, it said that a re-test be held at the centres where the alleged irregularities were reported from. The Bombay High Court has upheld the Pune district court's decision to transfer a case from the roster of a judge after one of the lawyers in the matter commented on his Facebook post. Further, under certain circumstances, a lawyer leaving a comment on a judge's social media post can be seen as "professional misconduct", the high court said. In an order earlier this month, a division bench of Justices Shantanu Kemkar and Nitin Sambre said a judge recusing (withdrawing) himself from a case in such circumstances would be justified. The issue arose during the hearing of a property dispute before Additional District Judge S B Bahalkar. Sonia Prabhu, one of the petitioners who herself is a lawyer and who represented her side of the family in the case, had commented on a Facebook post of Judge Bahalkar. An inter-state fraudster from Punjab, who allegedly cheated a woman job aspirant from the city of over Rs 19 lakh after drugging her and her mother, has been arrested, police said today. The accused Talvinder Singh alias Joseph from Ludhiana lured the complainant on the pretext of offering her a job in a perfume franchise with attractive salary package, police said. The woman contacted the accused and as per his instructions, she and her mother went to Delhi last month by flight to attend the interview, Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said. A priest from Shree Mangueshi temple in south Goa has been accused of molesting two women of Goan origin currently based in the US, inside the temple on separate occasions last month. Though the Ponda Police, under whose jurisdiction the temple is located, denied receipt of any formal complaint from the women, the temple committee has confirmed receiving the written complaint from the women. The alleged incidents had taken place on June 14 and 22 this year and both the women had named the same priest in their plaint.
