Bombay HC refuses interim relief to actor in cheating case

The Bombay High Court today refused interim relief from arrest to actor Maria Susairaj in a cheating case. She had earlier served a three-year sentence in the 2008 murder case of TV executive Neeraj Grover. A vacation bench of Justice Ajey Gadkari said it would hear the plea for urgent interim relief only if the applicant (Susairaj) was willing to deposit Rs 1 crore. "... No interim relief otherwise. The application shall be posted for hearing on June 15," the court said. The Kannada actress had earlier this week filed an anticipatory bail plea in the high court. In April, she was booked along with nine others by Thane police for allegedly cheating some people, including businessmen, of Rs 15 crore. The police has so far arrested four people in the case. Sunanda Pushkar death case transferred to designated court

A Delhi court today transferred the Sunanda Pushkar death case, in which her husband and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has been chargesheeted for abetting her suicide, to a special court designated to try lawmakers. Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmendra Singh transferred the case to Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal, who will take up the matter on May 28. "Since he is a sitting Member of Parliament, matter is being sent to the special designated court for politicians, that is ACMM Samar Vishal. Matter be taken up on May 28," the court said. The Delhi Police had on May 14 accused Tharoor, the Lok Sabha MP representing Thiruvananthapuram, of abetting Pushkar's suicide and told a city court that he should be summoned as an accused in the four-and-half year-old case, claiming there was sufficient evidence against him. In a nearly 3,000-page charge sheet, the police named Tharoor as the only accused while also alleging that he had subjected his wife to cruelty.

Father-son duo arrested for Rs 28 cr GST evasion

A father-son duo has been arrested by GST officers for tax evasion of Rs 28 crore, marking the first arrest in the national capital under the new indirect tax regime. The Shahdara-based duo was held on May 22 for issuing invoices fraudulently, a finance ministry statement said. The arrest was made by the Central Tax, GST Delhi, East Commissionerate. The case involved "fraudulent issuance of Input Tax Credit invoices involving evasion of approximately Rs 28 crore relating to copper industry", the ministry said. Searches were conducted at several places during which various incriminating documents and evidence were found. Investigation revealed involvement of the two individuals, the statement said. They were arrested under Section 69 (1) of CGST Act and were remanded to 14-day judicial custody. PNB fraud: ED files charge sheet against Nirav Modi, associates

The ED today filed its first charge sheet in the over USD 2 billion PNB fraud case involving diamantaire Nirav Modi and his associates, officials said. They said the about 12,000 page charge sheet or the prosecution complaint has been filed before a special court here under various sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). They added that the criminal complaint has only been filed against Nirav Modi, his associates and businesses and the entire gamut of issuance of fake Letters of Undertaking (LoU) by the Punjab National Bank (PNB) to his firms in alleged connivance of bank officials. It is expected that the agency would file a second charge sheet against Modi's uncle and jeweller Mehul Choksi and his businesses. Man held at Delhi airport for smuggling 1 kg gold by hiding it in rectum

A man was arrested at Delhi airport by customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country about one kilogram gold by hiding it in his rectum. The accused was intercepted after his arrival from Bangkok on Wednesday. "A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of 998 grams of gold, equivalent to Rs 31.04 lakh, which the passenger had concealed inside his rectum," a statement issued by the customs department today said. During questioning, the passenger admitted that he had smuggled three kilograms gold valued at approximately Rs 93.32 lakh during his past visits, it said. "Thus, the passengers has been involved in illegal clearance of gold collectively weighing 3.9 kg, valued at approximately Rs 1.2 crore," the customs department said, adding the accused has been arrested and the gold seized.

Gangster Vicky Tyagi case: Properties of 2 absconding accused attached

The properties of two absconding accused in the gangster Vicky Tyagi case have been attached, a CBI-CID officer said. The properties of the two accused, identified as Vikas Choudhary and Shah Nazeer, were yesterday attached under section 83 of the CrPC as per the order of a local court, CBI-CID Inspector Ombir Singh said. Vicky Tyagi was gunned down in the courtroom during a hearing in another case here on February 16, 2015. Shooter Sagar Malik was arrested from the spot while Brijbir Singh was nabbed the next day. Police had registered a case against 11 people, including four police officials. The Uttar Pradesh government had handed over the probe to CB-CID, which, on February 27 last year, had given clean chit to Brijbir, citing lack of evidence against him.

NCLAT asks Bhushan Power & Steel lenders to go ahead with selection of bids

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) today asked the Committee of Creditors (CoC) of debt-ridden Bhushan Power & Steel to proceed with the bids submitted by Tata Steel and UK-based Liberty House. The appellate tribunal also directed the CoC to keep its decision over the bids in a sealed cover and said it would be subject to its final order. "Approval of one or the other would be kept in a sealed cover," said the NCLAT bench headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya. The appellate tribunal also declined the request of the Committee of Creditors to direct both the parties to submit fresh bids. NCLAT has listed the matter for further hearing on July 12. The appellate tribunal's order came over an application filed by CoC seeking clarification over the process. Australian sentenced to death in Malaysia drugs case

A lawyer for an Australian woman accused of drug trafficking in Malaysia says her client has been sentenced to death after an appeals court overturned a lower court's acquittal. Maria Elvira Pinto Exposto was exonerated by the High Court last December on grounds that she didn't know there were 1.5 kg of crystal methamphetamine in her bag when she was arrested more than three years ago at Kuala Lumpur's airport. The prosecution appealed. Exposto's lawyer Tania Scivetti said today that the appeals court "found there was merit" in the prosecution's appeal, though it didn't say on what grounds. Scivetti said they will now appeal to Malaysia's top court. Malaysia has a mandatory death sentence for anyone found guilty of carrying more than 50 grams of a prohibited drug.

Minor raped at knife-point in UP

A minor girl was allegedly raped by a man at knife-point in her house at Chapar village here in the district, police said today. The incident took place yesterday when the girl was alone at her house, Circle Officer Rizwan Ahmed said. According to the officer, the accused was arrested soon after the father of the victim lodged a complaint against him alleging that he threatened and raped her daughter when she was alone in the house. A case has been registered and the police is investigating the matter for further details, he added.

UP: Man sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for killing his wife

A fast track court here sentenced a man to ten years imprisonment for killing his wife in 2006 over dowry dispute. Judge Balraj Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on the accused Charan Singh after holding him guilty under Section 304-B (dowry death) of the IPC yesterday. According to prosecution, the accused allegedly pushed his wife off the roof of their house, resulting in her death on November 24, 2006.

Two booked for trafficking after woman alleges harassment

The police has booked two persons on charges of trafficking after they sent a 49-year-old woman to Muscat where she was allegedly harassed while working as domestic help for an Arab family, an official said today. According to the complaint filed by the woman, a resident of the Ambernath township here, she was looking for a a job and the two accused, who were known to her husband, helped in arranging work for her in Muscat, a police spokesperson said. On January 27 this year, the woman left for Dubai and met an agent there. The agent later sent her to Muscat, where she worked as a domestic help for an Arab family that allegedly harassed her mentally and physically, the police official said. Later, her family approached the government authorities concerned and with their help, the woman returned to India last month, the police said. NCLAT admits banks' petition over Jaypee land

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal today admitted a petition filed by banks against the NCLT order which had directed Jaiprakash Associates to return nearly 760 acres of land to its subsidiary Jaypee Infratech. A two-member bench headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya also issued notices to the resolution professional (RP) of the company over the petition filed by three lenders -- Axis Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and ICICI Bank. The bench fixed July 13 as the next date of hearing. Girl dies of electrocution

An eight-year-old girl died after she accidentally came in contact with a live wire near her house in Bhayander, district rural police said today. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when the girl Nazrin Shaikh was playing near a public toilet located close to her house. Following her death, the minor's father lodged a complaint with Bhayander police station in this connection. According to police, the incident took place when some labourers were carrying out welding work of a door at the public toilet. "The labourers left the live electric wire open and unattended. The girl, who was playing around accidentally touched the wire and collapsed," police said. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead, they said. An offence under IPC section 304 A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) has been registered against three persons, including contractor Motiram Vishwakarma (42), they said.

California high court to rule on social media access

The California Supreme Court will decide whether Facebook and other social media companies must turn over user content to criminal defendants. The justices are expected to rule today in a case that has pitted some of Silicon Valley's biggest companies against public defenders. At issue are requests by a defendant charged with murder in San Francisco for videos and other content posted to Facebook and Instagram by the victim and a witness. Lee Sullivan and a co-defendant also sought information from Twitter. The defendants say their constitutional right to a fair trial entitles them to the material to prepare their case. Attorneys for the companies say a federal privacy law prevents the release of user content, and the defendants have other ways to get the material.

Begging at public, religious places in Srinagar banned

The Jammu and Kashmir government has banned begging at public and religious places here and directed the police to arrest the offenders. The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar, Syed Abid Rasheed Shah yesterday, said Srinagar being the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir holds a great importance in the socio-economic landscape of the state and so it is contingent upon the administration to take all measures necessary to make the district more citizen friendly and to prevent public nuisance at all costs. Two held with panther skin in Thane

The city police arrested two persons and seized panther skin worth Rs 8 lakh from them, an official said today. Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap near the Check Naka and apprehended the two men yesterday, senior police inspector Jairaj Ranavare, of crime unit V, Wagle Estate, said. The police recovered a sack from them which contained the panther skin, valued at around Rs 8 lakh, he said. Delhi court to hear Sunanda Pushkar death case today
