Ex-HR&CE official seeks advance bail in idol case

Former commissioner of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment P Dhanapal today moved the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail in the temple idol-casting case. The bail application was filed before the Madurai bench of the high court. Dhanapal has been arraigned as an accused in the case filed by the Idol wing of Tamil Nadu police for alleged misappropriation of gold collected by way of donation for making the processional idol of the famous Lord Dhandayuthapaniswamy temple at nearby Palani in 2004. Police have so far arrested four persons, including two officials of the HR and CE, which administers a large number of temples in Tamil Nadu, and a sculptor, in connection with the case. The petitioner contended that the case had been filed 14 years after the idol was made. Petitioner said the idol was cast using 10 kgs of gold. Anti-terror court summons last 2 Pak witnesses in 26/11 case

An anti-terrorism court today summoned the last two Pakistani prosecution witnesses in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack case and directed officials to submit in the next hearing the "concrete response" on the availability of 27 Indian witnesses "so as to conclude the trial expeditiously". Ten Lashkar-e-Taiba militants killed 166 people and wounded dozens in Mumbai in November, 2008. Nine of the attackers were killed by police while the tenth attacker, Ajmal Kasab, was caught and executed after a trial in India. The anti-terrorism court (ATC) is hearing the 26/11 Mumbai attack case since 2009. Man booked for 'raping' woman friend

A 30-year-old man was booked today for allegedly raping his 28-year-old woman friend, a housewife, at different locations in Thane and Pune districts, police said today. The accused, identified as Yogesh Patil, developed friendship with the woman around one year back, police said. The complainant claimed that Patil took her to Jejuri in Pune district and raped her in a lodge in January this year, said an official of Thane police station. Patil also allegedly raped the woman on two occasions in Thane district in subsequent months, the official said quoting the complaint. On one occasion, he allegedly raped the woman by threatening to kill her with a revolver, the official said. A case has been registered against Patil under various sections of the IPC. Police are yet to make any arrest in the case.

Vaishno Devi: NGT slams J-K govt for defying its order

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) today slammed the Jammu and Kashmir government for "open defiance" of its order on rehabilitation plan for horses and mules which have been barred from carrying pilgrims from Katra to the Vaishno Devi temple. A bench headed by acting NGT Chaiperson Jawad Rahim warned the state government while taking exception over the submission of the counsel for the Jammu and Kashmir government that the issue was pending consideration before the state cabinet. The green panel said it had penned down each and every step for the rehabilitation in its order and yet the state government has not complied with its direction. "We have had enough. If you want to comply with our order, its okay. Otherwise we know how to get it done. You are mischievously frustrating the orders of the tribunal. We are pained by your conduct. "The counsel for the state government has submitted a tabulated statement of timeline of events, the reading of which shows that there is open defiance .

3 suspected members of interstate drug cartel arrested

Three suspected members of an interstate drug cartel were arrested and 20 kilogram of heroin worth over Rs 20 crore was seized from them, police said today. The three accused were identified as Shakeel (30), Irshad (29) and Jitender Yadav (23) and police seized five kilogram of contraband from them, they added. Shakeel and Irshad, along with their other active associates, procured contraband from drug suppliers of Jharkhand and Manipur, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell). There are certain areas in Jharkhand, especially Naxal-affected areas around Chatra district, and hill terrains of Manipur where persons cultivate opium illegally and process it into pure form of heroin and transport the drugs in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh through carriers, he added. 2 Indian nationals arrested with gold in Nepal

Two Indian nationals were arrested today for allegedly smuggling half a kilogram of gold in a jeep in western Nepal, officials said. Jitendra Sainik and Suresh Kumar, residents of Haryana, were arrested during checking at Gaddachauki in Bhimdatta Municipality-10 of Nepal's Kanchanpur district, custom officials said. The gold was being smuggled in a jeep with an Indian number plate and the men were intercepted by the officials following a tip-off as they were on their way to India, The Himalayan Times reported. The market price of the seized gold, kept in a bag without a label, is around Rs 2.5 million, officials said. Chief at the customs office in Gaddachauki Madan Dahal said it was not clear where the gold came from, but assumed that it could have come from Kathmandu. "We are investigating whether it is the work of an organised smuggling group or some businessmen," he said, adding that legal action would be taken against the accused after further investigation.

ONGC official arrested by CBI taking bribe

A senior ONGC official was arrested today by the CBI for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs two lakh in Assam's Sivasagar district today. The CBI had received a complaint wherein the complainant alleged that ONGC Assam Asset's Deputy General Manager A K Singh was demanding a bribe of Rs 12 lakh for passing his pending bills, a CBI press release said here. An FIR was registered yesterday 2018 under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 on the basis of the written complaint received. The accused was caught red handed while he was demanding and accepting illegal gratification of Rs two lakh from the complainant today. The accused has been arrested and will be produced before the CBI Special Judge in Guwahati tomorrow. Searches are being conducted at his residential and official address, the release added.

Now govt depts, PSUs can't move court against each other over commercial disputes

The government today put in place a new mechanism to settle commercial disputes between government departments and Public Sector Undertakings where the Cabinet Secretary will have the last word, and barred them from approaching courts to settle such matters. However, disputes concerning the Railways, Income Tax, Customs and Excise departments have been kept out of ambit of the new mechanism. "The Union Cabinet approved the strengthening of the mechanism for resolution of commercial disputes of central public sector enterprises inter se and also between CPSEs and other government departments/organizations. The decision will put in place an institutionalised mechanism within the government for speedy resolution of commercial disputes of CPSEs without the matter being referred to the courts of law," an official statement said here. Now, a new two-tier mechanism will be put in place of the existing permanent machinery of arbitration mechanism to resolve commercial disputes between CPSEs, .

Court rejects Mukul Roy's defamation plea against Mamata's nephew

A Delhi court today rejected a criminal defamation complaint filed by BJP leader Mukul Roy against Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying the statement referred to as defamatory were not made by the respondent. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal dismissed the complaint of Roy, a former Railway Minister, who had alleged that he was defamed by Banerjee, a Trinamool Congress MP, through various means which included a legal notice and a tweet. Roy was earlier a member of the Trinamool Congress but later joined the BJP, while Banerjee is a Member of Parliament (MP) of the TMC. "It is clear that the statement referred to by the complainant as defamatory are actually not made by the respondent. The Delhi High Court today stressed the dire need for proper critical care training to paramedics, while hearing a plea by a woman whose mother had died of cardiac arrest due to medical negligence. The court sought response of the Delhi government on the plea by the woman, a neuro scientist in the US, seeking direction to frame binding critical care guidelines for Delhi government-run and private hospitals. She also prayed for a direction to provide basic and advanced critical life support cardiopulmonary resuscitation training to all doctors and nurses under their jurisdiction. "You (Delhi government) need to do something about it. Her mother was taken from one hospital to another. Paramedics should be trained more," Justice Rajiv Shakdher said. Mizoram police seize 13 gold biscuits smuggled from Myanmar

Mizoram police have seized 13 gold biscuits reportedly smuggled from Myanmar at Zembawk near Aizawl on Monday night, a police statement said here today. Police department's public relations officer (PRO) said that the seized gold weighing 13 kg was worth around Rs 4.29 crore on the prevailing rate of gold bullion. CARE settles case with Sebi, pays Rs 43 lakh

CARE Ltd today settled with markets regulator Sebi a probe into alleged violations of regulation pertaining to credit rating agency after paying a little over Rs 43 lakh. Sebi agreed to settle proposed adjudication proceedings in the case, pertaining to violation of the CRA (credit rating agency) norms, after it was approached by CARE with a plea under the settlement regulations. The settlement allows entities to settle charges by paying a penalty without admission or denial of guilt. Earlier in January, Crisil had settled with Sebi a probe into alleged violations of regulation pertaining to credit rating agency after paying over Rs 28 lakh. In July last year, the markets regulator had issued a show-cause notice to Crisil and Credit Analysis and Research (CARE) for not following proper process while evaluating the Amtek Auto debentures.
