SC dismisses Gayatri Prajapati's bail plea in rape case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the bail plea of former Uttar Pradesh Minister Gayatri Prajapati who was arrested in a gangrape case.In February last year, a police complaint was filed against the Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and six others in the case following the apex court's order.The Uttar Pradesh Police had also filed a non-bailable warrant against the accused, following which Prajapati went absconding and was later arrested in Lucknow.Prajapati's bail plea has repeatedly been dismissed by Allahabad High Court, in the past.

Bhim Army leader's kin died in 'accidental firing': Police

The Uttar Pradesh Police have claimed that the brother of Bhim Army's district president was killed in an "accidental firing" by one of his friends. On May 9, Sachin Walia, brother of Bhim Army's Saharanpur district president Kamal Walia, died of the gunshot injury, triggering tension in the area. Yesterday, Deputy Inspector General (Saharanpur Range) Sharad Sachan said that on the day of the incident, Sachin had called Praveen to the house of a mutual friend, Nihal Singh. "At Nihal's house, Praveen Singh was examining a country-made pistol when he accidentally pulled the trigger and the bullet hit Sachin," he said. "During questioning, Praveen told that they had taken Sachin to the district hospital but he died on the way," he said. Police have arrested Praveen and recovered the pistol. The DIG also announced Rs 25,000 award for the police team "that worked out" the case.

Court sends contractor to police custody for a day

A Delhi court today sent a contractor, arrested in connection with an alleged scam in the Public Works Department (PWD), to police custody for a day. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Khanagwal sent Vinay Bansal to custody after the counsel for Delhi Police's Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) said he was required for custodial interrogation. Vinay, who is the son of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's late brother-in-law Surender Bansal, was produced before the court after his two-day custody granted to the ACB ended today. According to an FIR lodged in May last year, Vinay and his father were working on a project of over Rs 4 crore. After receiving a payment of Rs 3 crore, they showed fake bills of Rs 1 crore for procurement of steel from a company that was "non-existent". Vinay was arrested on May 10 by the ACB. The court had then rejected the application of the ACB for police remand, saying Vinay, who had fainted and collapsed in the courtroom that day, was not medically fit. Three .

Bike lifter arrested, 4 stolen motorcycles recovered in Jammu

An alleged bike lifter was arrested and four stolen motorcycles were recovered at his disclosure here, police said today. The vehicle lifter, hailing from Samba district, was arrested yesterday by a police party from the Gandhi Nagar police station, a police spokesperson said. He said the arrest was made during investigation of a case registered at the police station recently after a two-wheeler was stolen from the area. Fourstolen motorcycles were recovered at the disclosure of the arrested person from different parts of the city, the spokesperson said. He said some more arrests and recoveries are expected as his questioning was still going on.

PNB scam: CBI names Mehul Choksi as 'wanted'

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday filed the second chargesheet in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case and named main accused Nirav Modi's uncle Mehul Choksi as 'wanted'.The CBI in its 12000 page chargesheet charged 15 accused persons and three firms under sections 409, 420, 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).On Tuesday, the CBI had named three companies and 22 individuals in its first chargesheet and framed charges under section 120B, read with Sections 409 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant provisions of Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act.The names included Nirav Modi, his brother Nishal Modi, three companies - Diamond R US, Solar Exports, Stellar Diamond and seven employees of these companies Hemant Bhat, Vipul Ambani, Arjun Patil, Kavita Mankikar, Miten Pandya, Manish Bosamiya, and Subhash Parab.Chartered accountant Sanjay Kumar Rambhia was also named.The chargesheet states that Rs. 6498.20 crores amount of Letters Of ...

CBI files chargesheet against Mehul Choksi, Gitanjali group

The CBI today filed its chargesheet against billionaire jeweller Mehul Choksi and 17 other entities, including companies owned by him and other individuals, in connection with the over USD 2 billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, officials said. The chargesheet was filed before a special CBI court in Mumbai. In the chargesheet, pertaining to an FIR against Choksi, the Gitanjali group of companies and 16 other entities (including companies and individuals), the agency has slapped charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the officials said. They added that this was a separate chargesheet from the one filed on May 14 against Choksi's nephew Nirav Modi and stressed that the present chargesheet pertained to the FIR against Choksi. HC orders action against illegal water cooling plants in Delhi

The Delhi High Court today directed the local municipal bodies to take action against water cooling plants which are illegally operating in the national capital in violation of the master plan. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the three MCDs and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) seeking their response to a plea by an NGO which has alleged that the water cooling plants are operating from notified commercial streets in "flagrant violation" of Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) 2021. NGO Society for Holistic Approach and Development, in its plea filed through advocates Kamlesh Kumar Mishra and Sanjay Baniwal, has claimed that orders for punitive action against such units by the Municipal Health Officer (MHO) of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and other senior officials have been "disregarded" by its own officials. SC asks JAL to deposit Rs 1,000 crore

The Supreme Court today asked realty firm Jaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL) to deposit an additional Rs 1,000 crore with its Registry by June 15 for ensuring refund of money to the hassled home buyers. On submission of this amount, the liquidation proceedings against Jaypee Infratech limited (JIL), a subsidiary of holding company JAL, shall remain stayed, a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said. The bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said if there was any default in depositing the money by June 15, the statutory proceedings against JIL, a firm which has been facing insolvency proceedings, shall proceed. The apex court had earlier directed JAL to deposit Rs 2,000 crore with the apex court Registry. So far, the real estate firm has deposited Rs 750 crore.

Lalu granted release order from jail in fodder scam cases, set to fly to Patna by evening

RJD president Lalu Prasad was today granted release order by trial courts from jail in accordance with the Jharkhand High Court's verdict providing him provisional bail in all three cases of fodder scam on medical ground. The release order has been granted in all three cases of fodder scam in which Prasad has been convicted, his lawyer Prabhat Kumar told PTI. While Special CBI court Judge Shivpal Singh granted release order to Prasad in two cases -- RC 64A/96 (Chaibasa treasury) and RC 38A/96 (Dumka) -- the CBI court of Judge S S Prasad provided the release permission in case number RC 68A/96 (Chaibasa), he said. Kumar said that they completed the formalities of signing bond and submitting sureties of Rs 50,000 each in the three cases to get the release order. The release order has gone to the jail authorities so that Prasad could be allowed to go out of the prison, he said. Leopard mauls boy to death in Rajouri

A four-year-old boy was mauled to death by a leopard outside his house in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district today, a police official said. Mohammad Usman was sleeping with his grandmother outside his house in Galutti village when the leopard attacked him in the early hours, he said. The leopard had ventured into the village from a nearby forest and fled after Usman's grandmother and other villagers raised an alarm, the official said. The grandmother escaped unhurt. Usman was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, the police said, adding that the body had been handed over to the family for the last rites.

Barred from drinking alcohol, man commits suicide

A 25-year-old man, believed to be an alcoholic, ended his life after being prohibited from consuming alcohol by his parents, police said today. Kapil Kumar, a resident of Rahmatpur village in Muzaffarnagar, had frequent altercations with his family members over his addiction, a police official said. Last evening too, when his parents stopped him from going out for drinks, Kumar locked himself up in a room and shot himself with a locally made pistol, police said. Kumar's body has been sent for post-mortem and no suicide note has been recovered, they said.

Woman's body found in a bag in Muzaffarnagar

The body of woman was found in a bag near a canal in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar, police said today. The victim, who is yet to be identified but believed to be in her late 20s, was murdered and stuffed inside a bag before being disposed off, police said. Her body was discovered last evening from the outskirts of Phulat village, they said. The dead body has been sent for post-mortem and further investigations are on.

The police on May 18 will question Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash alleged assault case.Earlier this year, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs Amanatullah Khan and Prakash Jarwal were questioned in the regard.Both Khan and Jarwal were arrested on February 21 for allegedly mishandling Anshu Prakash during a party meeting conducted at the residence of Kejriwal.The MLAs were later sent to 14-day judicial custody, which was further extended by 14 days.Later both the leaders were granted by the Delhi High Court.
