Will maintain status quo on Yamuna supply till May 21: Haryana to SC

The Haryana government today told the Supreme Court that it would maintain status quo on supply of Yamuna river water to Delhi till May 21. The apex court also asked the Delhi government and the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to request Haryana for the maintenance of status quo on water supply and directed Haryana to take an independent decision on the matter. A bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Navin Sinha said the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) should deal with the issue and it would be appropriate if the Delhi government approaches the Board. The Delhi government withdrew the plea filed by the DJB in the apex court and said it would approach the Board immediately for release and continuation of drinking water supply from Haryana. The bench observed, "We expect the Board to meet and sort out the matter amicably between Delhi and Haryana." UYRB was set up by the Centre in 1995. Ex-French leader Sarkozy faces ruling on campaign finance trial

Former French leader Nicolas Sarkozy faces a hearing today on whether he must stand trial on charges of illicit financing of his failed 2012 presidential campaign, one of several legal inquiries which have dogged the rightwing politician since he left office. If an appeals court upholds a judge's decision last year ordering the trial, Sarkozy could face a potentially embarrassing public ordeal as well as up to a year in prison if convicted. Prosecutors claim Sarkozy spent nearly 43 million euros (USD 51 million) on his lavish re-election bid -- almost double the legal limit of 22.5 million euros -- via fake invoices which a public relations firm charged instead to his UMP party. Sarkozy has angrily denounced the charges, saying he was unaware of the fraud by executives at Bygmalion, who are also facing trial alongside accountants and former UMP officials. His defence team is also arguing on procedural grounds, saying Sarkozy has already been sanctioned for campaign overspending by ...

"We expect to secure her bail in the pending cases as well," her lawyer Joynal Abedin said. Sentencing in Bill Cosby's sex assault case set for Sept 24

Bill Cosby will be sentenced on September 24, almost five months to the day after he was convicted of sexual assault, a judge said today. Lawyers for the comedian, who turns 81 in July and faces the prospect of the rest of his life in prison, had asked Judge Steven O'Neill to delay sentencing until the end of the year. Cosby's convictions on three counts of aggravated indecent assault will likely be combined into one charge that carries a standard sentence of five to 10 years in prison. Cosby's spokesman did not immediately respond to a message left seeking comment. The man once revered as America's Dad has been a prisoner in his suburban Philadelphia mansion since his April 26 conviction and he hasn't been heard from since lashing out at a prosecutor in court that day. O'Neill ordered Cosby be outfitted with a GPS monitoring bracelet and said he needed permission to leave the home, where jurors concluded he drugged and molested Andrea Constand in January 2004. Even then, Cosby can go
