Hizbul Mujahideen's hawala module busted, 4 OGWs arrested

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday busted a hawala module of terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen and arrested four Over Ground Workers(OWG).The police even seized Rs one lakh from their possession.The arrested OGWs have been identified as- Ajaz Ahmad, Khurshid Ahmad Thokar, Sajad Ahmad Malla, Mohd Arif.The matter is being further investigated.

Rs 10 lakh in cash seized, BJP leaders held

Two days before the panchayat election in the state, the police today arrested three persons including two BJP leaders for allegedly possessing Rs 10 lakh in cash in the district. Superintendent of Police Avaru Rabindranath said the three were arrested from a hotel here and the unaccounted cash has been seized. The arrested persons included BJP Jalpaiguri district secretary Shubhankar Ghosh and Alipurduar district leader Raju Ghosh. State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said the money belonged to the party and it would be informed to the state Election Commission. The panchayat election would be held on May 14.

3 arrested for pickpocketing

Three men were arrested on the charge of pickpocketing on Delhi Metro trains and buses, the police said today. The accused, Raju (31), Rahul (28) and Ravi (33), used to operate in groups, they said. Following a complaint in February that Rs 45,000 in cash was picked from the pocket of a man while he was boarding a metro train in Karol Bagh, an investigation was launched. Explaining their modus operandi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Deepak Gauri said, the accused would first identify the victim and then start pushing him by claiming that they were in a hurry and in the process pick the victim's pockets.

Madras HC upholds cancellation of exams to recruit lecturers

The Madras High Court has upheld the Tamil Nadu government's decision to cancel the exam conducted by Teachers Recruitment Board last year to recruit lecturers for state-run polytechnic colleges for the 2017-18 academic year. Justice S M Subramaniam, who dismissed a batch of petitions recently challenging the cancellation, said the court had examined the probe report submitted by the government. The report said there were several cash transactions and the outsourcing company had tampered with hard discs and the original Optical Mark Recognition sheets. Also, it was found that even before the commencement of the exam there were conspiracies to commit such malpractices and corrupt activities in the selection process. The court said after going through the report, it has come to the conclusion that there were large-scale malpractices and corrupt activities in the selection process. Conspiracy to prove Ishrat encounter was fake: ex-cop Amin

Former Gujarat police officer N K Amin, an accused in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, today told a CBI court here that there was a "conspiracy" to prove that the encounter was fake. Arguing in person over his discharge application before special CBI judge J K Pandya, Amin said the FIR against him was "fabricated, biased and based on false facts". Amin, accused in the charge sheet of firing five rounds from his gun at Ishrat Jahan and three others on June 14, 2004, claimed that IPS officer Satish Verma, a former investigator in the case, was also behind the conspiracy. Verma was part of the conspiracy hatched at the behest of "the political party then in power" as he (Verma) allowed I K Chauhan, a former accused in the case, to turn a prosecution witness and depose against Amin despite knowing that he was stating blatant lies, Amin said. 4 held for assaulting Kashmiri woman: Police

The Delhi Police today arrested four men for allegedly assaulting a Kashmiri woman in southeast Delhi's Sunlight Colony, a senior police officer said. Earlier in the day, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik informed Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba that the incident was a local issue, triggered by a dispute over feeding stray dogs and had nothing to do with the woman's origin. On Friday night, the victims, including four women, were allegedly surrounded and roughed up by a mob of around 30-40 people. A police case was registered following a complaint from one of the women. She had alleged that she was physically assaulted by the mob. The police arrested the four men -- Kalyan, a security guard, and three locals, SN Pandey, RK Chopra and Anil Lath -- on the basis of CCTV footage collected from the area. 2 sentenced to life for kidnap, murder of ex-MLA's grandson

A court in Deesa town here today sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for kidnapping and murdering a 13-year-old boy. Four others were sentenced to seven years in jail. Additional district and session judge D B Bardot sentenced Mehul Prajapati and Mala Masa Rabari to life in prison for kidnapping and murdering Jainam Shah. Vinubhai Vaghela, Bakaji Thakor, Ashokji Thakor and Jentibhai Thakor were sentenced to seven-year imprisonment for conspiring with Prajapati and Rabari, said advocate B A Tunwar, counsel for the victim's father. Shah was kidnapped from near Ramji Mandir in Thara town of Kankrej taluka in Banaskantha on March 25, 2014. The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh from the boy's father, Trilokchand Shah, a trader and son of former MLA late Shantilal Shah. FIR registered against six Police personnel for thrashing youth

An FIR was registered on Saturday against more than six Delhi Police personnel after they allegedly thrashed a youth in Delhi's Rani Bagh area earlier this week.In the FIR, the resident of Rani Bagh named Surendra Aggarwal alleged that on May 6, few policemen from Rani Bagh Police Station towed away his Scooty, which was standing outside his house.Aggarwal claimed that when his younger son went to bring the Scooty back from the Police Station they policemen demanded Rs 200 from him and when he refused to do so, they increased the amount to Rs 1000.When his son told the policemen that they are acting illegally, the police personal thrashed him brutally.Aggarwal in the FIR claimed that the policemen even thrashed his elder son when he went to rescue his brother and misbehaved with him and his wife.Earlier the Delhi Police had suspended six of the police personnel from its ranks after the case surfaced.

Rapist awarded death sentence: MP CM hails verdict

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Saturday, hailed the Indore District Court's decision to award the death penalty to the man who raped and murdered a four-month-old girl in Rajwada."I welcome the decision. Businessman arrested for molesting minor girl in theatre

A businessman was arrested today for allegedly molesting a minor girl inside a cinema hall in the district, police said. He was booked under Section 354 of IPC (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and the POCSO Act, they said. The incident took place at a theatre in Edapal on April 18, police said. Moideen Kutty was arrested after visuals of the incident, captured on CCTV in the theatre, were aired by a television channel today. He was earlier taken into custody from Shornur and brought to a police station in Changaramkulam for questioning. The CCTV footage was handed over to police by childline authorities on April 28. The man attempted to sexually assault the girl, who stays with her aunt, on May 10, they said. Minor raped by 2 boys in J-K

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped by two boys in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. The incident took place in Tanda village on Thursday, they said. Acting on a complaint lodged by the victim's family, a case of kidnapping and rape was registered against the duo, the police said, adding that the accused were apprehended today. Case against school headmaster for sexually abusing student

The headmaster of a school has been charged with sexually exploiting a minor girl after promising to help her get through the intermediate exams, police said here today. He developed an acquaitance with the girl after promising to help her pass the exams (as he had failed) and sexually expolited her, they said. The headmaster also allegedly tied a mangalasutra to her a few days back, they said. Based on a complaint by the girl's father, a case of rape, kidnap, SC/ST atrocities prevention act and POCSO Act was registered against him, police said. Efforts were on to nab the headmaster, they said.

Man gets life in jail for causing death of 16-yr-old boy

A court here has sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment for life for the death of a 16-year-boy at a workshop where he worked. Kashmir Singh, a resident of Vishavkarma colony, was convicted by Additional Session Judge Jagdeep Kaur Virk of taking the life of Aman Kumar by inserting an air pressure pipe in his rectum in May last year. The court also slapped a fine of Rs two lakh on the convict and turned down his plea for leniency. District Attorney Ravinder Abrol said Aman Kumar's mother in her police complaint had stated that her youngest son worked as a helper at the workshop owned by Sartaj Kaur. When Aman's clothes got wet and he was drying those in front of a machine, Kashmir Singh got angry on noticing him do so. He put a pressure air pipe in the private parts of Aman, which led to deterioration of his medical condition and he died. Goa NGO locks state's mines department in symbolic protest

An NGO, whose petition in the Supreme Court led to the quashing of 88 mining leases in Goa, today locked the state's Mines and Geology department here alleging that the department was the "biggest source of illegalities". The NGO, Goa Foundation, claimed that its action was a symbolic one. The NGO's director Claud Alvares said that there was no one present in the office since, being a Saturday, it was a weekly holiday there. Clerk of pvt finance firm shot in Kurukshetra

A 30-year-old clerk of a private finance company was shot at in his office located at Pehowa in this district today, the police said. CCTV recordings showed that two unidentified youth arrived on a black coloured motorcycle without a registration number, went up to the first storey of the building near a bus stand on Ambala-Kaithal road and fired at Sandip twice, SHO of Pehowa police station Jai Narain said. One bullet hit Sandip on his left arm while the second one hit him in the back, the police official said, adding the accused did not take anything from the office.
