Bhima Koregaon victim challenges Ekbote's bail in Bombay HC

A victim of the January 1 Bhima Koregaon violence in Pune has filed an application in the Bombay High Court challenging the bail granted by a local court to Milind Ekbote, the prime accused in the case. Ekbote, who heads a right-wing organisation called the Samast Hindu Aghadi, was booked by the Pune Police in two separate FIRs on charges of inciting violence, as well as under sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He was arrested in March after the local court in Pune, the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. However, a month after his arrest, he was granted bail by the Pune court. This bail order of the sessions court has now been challenged by Sanjay Bhalerao, one of the victims in the case. College sex scandal: Court rejects Nirmala Devi's bail plea

A sessions court here rejected today the bail plea of assistant professor Nirmala Devi, arrested in connection with an alleged sex scandal. The suspended assistant professor of the private Devanga Arts College in Aruppukottai, some 500km from Chennai, was accused of advising students to extend sexual favours to some officials in return for higher marks and money. District Sessions judge Singaraj dismissed Nirmala Devi's bail plea and adjourned the hearing on the petitions filed by two other accused in the case - V Murugan and Karuppasamy to May 18. Nirmala Devi was arrested on April 16, a day after an audio clip went viral on the social media, in which she purportedly advised students "to adjust with some officials". It was alleged that she sought to persuade girls to consider extending sexual favours to senior officials of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), to which the college is affiliated. Senior Maharashtra IPS officer Himanshu Roy commits suicide

Senior Maharashtra IPS officer Himanshu Roy today allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at his residence here, police said. The 1988-batch Indian Police Service officer, who was suffering from cancer, would have been 55 next month. Roy, the additional director general of police (Establishment), allegedly shot himself with his service revolver and was rushed to Bombay Hospital where he was declared dead, an official said. Roy was considered a fitness enthusiast and had been on leave since 2016, undergoing treatment for cancer. The officer had served in elite groups of the Maharashtra Police, including as chief of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and in the Crime Branch. Roy is credited with being involved in the solving of a string of prominent cases, including the murders of journalist J Dey, fringe Bollywood actor Laila Khan and law graduate Pallavi Purkhayasta in Mumbai. Mehatpur SHO Bajwa taken into custody for 'assaulting' cop

Mehatpur SHO Parminder Singh Bajwa, who had booked Congress' Shahkot assembly bypoll candidate in an illegal sand mining case recently, was today taken into custody by the Jalandar police for allegedly assaulting an on-duty government official. The Congress nominee for the May 28 by-election, Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia, among others, was booked for alleged illegal sand mining in different villages of Jalandhar district. "He (Bajwa) pushed and assaulted an assistant sub-inspector rank police officer during the frisking process at the court premises (in Jalandhar)," Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, Praveen Kumar Sinha said. SC wants anti-sexual harassment panels in all courts

The Supreme Court on Friday directed state high courts to ensure that committees in all district courts must be set up to deal with sexual harassment complaints.This order comes in the wake of the recent incident of a lady advocate being assaulted by members of the Bar at the Tis Hazari Courts in New Delhi on May 4.The apex court has also asked all the high courts to submit the report on it soon.The next date of hearing in this matter is on July 5.The three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, was hearing the petition of the woman lawyer.The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act of 2013 requires every workplace to set up committees to probe sexual harassment complaints.

Man arrested for 'molesting' daughters in Udaipur

A 45-year-old inebriated man was arrested for allegedly molesting his two daughters in Rajasthan's Udaipur district, police said today. The mother of the victims, aged six and 11, had lodged a complaint against her husband, following which a case was registered against him under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, said Adarsh Kumar, the station house officer of Surajpole police station. The accused was produced before a local court today and sent to jail. He was a liquor addict and often quarrelled with his wife, Kumar said.

5 people from Kashmir roughed up in Delhi, cops begin probe

A group of Kashmiri people was allegedly thrashed by a mob in southeast Delhi's Sunlight Colony, following which police launched a probe, an officer said today. The victims, including four women, were allegedly surrounded and beaten up by a mob of 30-40 people last night. The victims alleged that they were targeted because they were Kashmiris. "My sisters were abused and beaten up. I have a broken left hand and one of my guests who had come to visit us was also attacked. It was a planned attack and the accused were carrying hockey sticks," said one of the victims. He said that they were roughed up and the accused were shouting slogans, 'Kashmiri terrorists should be sent back'. He said that they had been attacked a couple of times earlier also and had been living in fear in the locality. Police have registered a case and are probing the matter, an officer said.

Maha IPS officer Himanshu Roy commits suicide

Former Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Himanshu Roy allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself here today, police said. The 1988-batch IPS officer allegedly shot himself at his residence with his service revolver, he said. Roy, who also served as Additional Director General of Police (Establishment), was rushed to Bombay Hospital, where he was declared dead. Roy, who was joint commissioner of police (Crime) from 2012-2014, is credited with leading the investigation into the IPL betting scandal. He was then transferred to the state ATS. During his tenure as the agency's chief, software engineer Anees Ansari was arrested for allegedly planning to blow up the American school at the Bandra Kurla complex.

J'khand HC grants 6 weeks provisional bail to Lalu

RJD president Lalu Prasad was today granted a six-week provisional bail by the Jharkhand High Court on medical ground in the fodder scam cases, his lawyer Prabhat Kumar said. The provisional bail was granted to Prasad by Justice Apresh Kumar Singh. Currently, Prasad is on a three-day parole to attend his elder son Tej Pratap Yadav's marriage in Patna tomorrow.
