3 men gets life imprisonment for woman's murder

A court here today awarded life imprisonment to three persons for murder of a 62-year-old woman in 2002. Additional district and sessions judge Achyutanand Upadhyay also awarded three years of rigorous imprisonment to five others and acquitted six persons for want of evidence. The court held three persons guilty of murder of a woman, loot and destroying evidence. It also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them. Hazra Khatoon was strangulated to death on July 28, 2002. Her son in a complaint to Amdabad police had named 14 persons as accused. The woman's son, who worked in Delhi at the time of his mother's murder, said that the 14 named accused persons had killed his mother with an intention to loot his house. They had buried the body with the intention to destroy evidence, he said.

Man gets death sentence for kidnapping, murdering minor boy

The Nagpur District Court today awarded the death penalty to a man for kidnapping and murdering an 11-year-old boy in the city in 2013. Santosh Kadve (26), the accused, was held guilty of kidnapping and murdering the boy on June 10, 2013, said special public prosecutor Vijay Kolhe. Sessions judge Shekhar Munghate delivered the verdict today, he said. "The case fell under the 'rarest of rare' category and we had sought capital punishment. We proved the boy was last seen with Kadve by examining two child witnesses," he said. A total of 27 witnesses were examined by the prosecution. The boy had gone missing while playing outside his house in the Khapri area here. According to the prosecution, Kadve, who lived nearby, had kidnapped him. He later called the boy's parents and demanded Rs 2 lakh in ransom. Police tried to track him down from the mobile phone from which Kadve had called. High court denies interim bail to Sameer Bhujbal

The Bombay High Court today refused to grant interim bail to former MP Sameer Bhujbal in a case of money laundering in which his uncle and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal too is an accused. Sameer Bhujbal, Chhagan Bhujbal and 51 others were charged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in 2016 for various offences including the Maharashtra Sadan scam. Another judge of the high court had given bail to Chhagan Bhujbal, a former deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, on May 4. Justice Bharati Dangre, who is presiding over a vacation bench, refused to grant interim relief to Sameer Bhujbal, whose bail plea is pending, late this evening. His lawyer Vikram Chaudhary argued that of the 53 accused, only Sameer was now in jail. He also cited the bail order in Chhagan Bhujbal's case to buttress the case. Two arrested for carrying out burglaries in southeast Delhi

Two men were arrested for allegedly carrying out burglaries at factories in southeast Delhi's Okhla industrial area, police said today. On May 4, a special picket for vehicle checking was constituted at Maa Anandmai Marg, Okhla. At 3 pm, two motorcycle-borne men were stopped for checking, but they fled, they said. However, the police team intercepted the riders and nabbed them. The accused, Jiten Kushwaha (25) and Sonu Kumar (25), were arrested and 14 laptops, one LED TV, 67 pieces of leather jackets, 146 pieces of designer clothes, unstitched cloth material, copper pipes, were seized from them, they added. With their arrest, police claimed to have solved six cases of burglary. In view of the recent incidents of house and factory thefts and burglaries a Special Task Force (STF) was constituted. Man killed in a spat over getting down from taxi

A 36-year-old man died after allegedly being assaulted by four persons including three minors during a scuffle over a taxi in suburban Chembur, a senior police official said today. The incident took place near the Chembur Camp bus stop in the wee hours yesterday. Krishna Boyanna (18) and his three friends, minors, wanted to take the taxi in which the victim Surendra Singh and two others were travelling, the official said. Singh and his companions were about to get down but were taking their time to pay the fare. Irked, the accused asked them to get down immediately, the official said. This led to a spat, and the accused allegedly hit the other group with paver blocks, the official said. Man arrested for attempting to extort Rs 1 cr from businessman

A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly posing as a gangster and trying to extort Rs 1 crore from a businessman by threatening to kill him, police said. The police had received a complaint from a businessman who claimed to be receiving extortion calls from an unknown number. He said that the caller identified himself as Pradeep Solanki, a gangster of the Najafgarh area, and threatened to kill him if he did not pay the ransom amount within seven days, they said. Death or injury while boarding or de-boarding train entitles passenger to compensation: SC

Death or injury while boarding or de-boarding a train is an "untoward incident" which entitles a passenger to compensation and will not be considered his negligence, the Supreme Court held today. It also said that mere presence of a body on the railway premises would not be conclusive to hold that the injured or deceased was a "bona fide passenger" for seeking compensation. The apex court, however, clarified that the absence of ticket will not negate the compensation and the onus will be on claimant to prove his case by providing requisite documents. "We hold that death or injury in the course of boarding or de-boarding a train will be an 'untoward incident' entitling a victim to the compensation and will not fall under the proviso to Section 124A (suicide, self-inflicted injury) merely on the plea of negligence of the victim as a contributing factor," a bench comprising justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and Rohinton F Nariman said. SC expresses anguish over lawyers targeting judges, court orders

A trend has started among lawyers to target the judges, which would ultimately lead to the "killing of the institution", a Supreme Court bench observed today. A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and U U Lalit, while hearing a Kerala medical college matters, was critical of the lawyers criticising the orders and judgements of the courts in television debates. "Who is spared in this court? Every Judge is targeted. By one arrow you want to kill all. You people are destroying this institution. ED attaches Rs 14.48 crore assets of Yadav Singh

The Enforcement Directorate has attached assets worth Rs 14.48 crore of Yadav Singh, a former chief engineer of Noida and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, in connection with a money laundering case, the probe agency said. The central probe agency issued a provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and attached assets of the former bureaucrat and his wife Kusum Lata in Gautam Budh Nagar, Nainital, Agra, Delhi and Greater Noida, apart from Rs 29.46 lakh deposits kept in a bank account. "This is the second attachment of Yadav Singh and his family in the disproportionate assets case. Total properties worth Rs. 20.38 crores have been attached in this case," the agency said in a statement. CBI court sentences SAFEX director to 3 yrs RI in chitfund scam

A designated CBI Court here has convicted Firoz Khan, a former director in the Safex Group of Companies, in a chitfund scam case and sentenced him to three years rigorous imprisonment. The court also convicted Safex Infra India Limited represented by Khan and directed the company to pay compensation of Rs 12 crore which shall be paid to the unpaid depositors after realisation as per law, a CBI release said here today. Under the scam, investors in Odisha were cheated of crores of rupees. The conviction and the order was passed by the court on Monday. The investing agency had registered the case against Safex Group on June 5, 2014 in compliance of the orders of the Supreme Court of May 9, 2014 in a case of 2013 against the company, the release said. The CBI took over the investigation of the case from the crime branch of Odisha Police. The crime branch had registered a case against Safex on September 12, 2012. It was alleged that the accused persons collected Rs 9,36,24,500 illegally .

Bhim Army leader's kin shot

The brother of Bhim Army's district president died of a gunshot injury today, triggering tension in the area. The police booked four people following a complaint by victim Sachin Walia's mother. But they said it was not immediately clear if this was a case of murder, implying that it could be an accident. Sachin's brother Kamal Walia heads the Saharanpur district unit of the Dalit outfit. The incident happened near the venue of a function to mark the Maharana Pratap Jayanti. Authorities shut down the event soon after the shooting and stepped up police deployment in the district. Lawyers' strike affects judicial work in Delhi district courts

Judicial work was affected in the six district courts at Patiala House, Tis Hazari, Saket, Rohini, Karkardooma and Dwarka here due to a strike by lawyers. They were protesting against alleged false implication of its office bearers in an assault case lodged by a woman lawyer. The lawyers, however, appeared for arguing in matters like bail and police and judicial custody. "Lawyers did not appear in courts today. Only proxy counsel appeared for urgent matters but they did not wear proper attire to mark the protest," Jaiveer Chauhan, spokesperson of the Coordination Committee of All-District Court Bar Associations of Delhi said. He said that members of the committee had a meeting with Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Gita Mittal today and after the deliberation it was decided by the committee to suspend the agitation and the lawyers will resume their works from tomorrow. NIA takes over probe into seizure of Aadhaar cards from Maoists

The National Investigation Agency has taken over probe in the case pertaining to the seizure of over 1,100 Aadhaar cards and guns from Maoists after an encounter with the state police in March, officials said here today.
