Youth abducted for ransom found dead

A 19-year-old youth, who was allegedly abducted from his rented room in Akash Nagar area here, was found dead today, police said. The family members of the deceased, Vishal Mewada, had alleged that he was kidnapped yesterday and some unidentified people called his father to demand a ransom of Rs 15 lakh, Circle in-charge at Borekheda Police Station Mahavir Singh said. "The body bore marks of fatal injury suggesting he was brutally murdered," Singh said, adding it was found near riverside in Notana village. A case under relevant sections was lodged against the unidentified accused in this connection and further investigation into the matter were on, Singh said. The body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem, he said.

Cosby's wife Camille slams 'mob justice'

The wife of Bill Cosby today slammed as "mob justice" her husband's conviction by a US jury of sexual assault, attacking the media, prosecutors and his accuser in a tirade-laden statement. "This is mob justice, not real justice," said Camille Cosby, who has been married to the disgraced megastar for more than half a century. "This tragedy must be undone not just for Bill Cosby, but for the country," she added in a three-page statement, insisting her husband was innocent. Kasauli killing: Man who shot lady officer leading demolition drive held in UP

The man accused of killing a woman officer who was leading a demolition drive here was nabbed today from the Mathura-Vrindavan area, where he was hiding in disguise, police said. A team comprising Himachal Pradesh and Delhi Police personnel arrested Vijay Singh who shot dead Assistant Town Planner Shail Bala Sharma on Tuesday, they said. "The accused Vijay Singh was arrested from Mathura-Vrindavan area this evening. It was a joint effort of the Himachal Pradesh Police and a Delhi Police special team," Solan SP, Mohit Chawla told PTI. The accused was on the run and kept changing locations, he said. May grant Rs 25 lakh compensation: SC to ex-ISRO scientist

The Supreme Court today said it may consider granting Rs 25 lakh as compensation to former ISRO scientist S Nambi Narayanan and ordering a probe to ascertain the role of SIT officers who had framed him in the ISRO espionage case. "I have served the nation. I am hurt. It was a fabricated case. I have suffered the agony for ten years. The CBI gave me the clean chit and the closure report was accepted by the Magistrate," 76-year-old scientist told the bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra. "I seek compensation of Rs one crore and action against the (SIT) officers who framed me," Narayanan, who has received Rs 10 lakh as compensation so far, said. The bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said, "it cannot go the extent of awarding Rs one crore as the public remedy compensation". Ordinance to amend law to speed up disposal of commercial disputes comes into force

An ordinance aimed at amending a law to allow speedy disposal of commercial disputes came into force today. The government says the move will help improve India's ranking in the ease of doing business index. According to the ordinance issued today, the specified value of a commercial dispute will be brought down to Rs 3 lakh from the present Rs 1 crore. The ordinance amends the Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts Act. The ordinance will replace the bill. It would bring down the time taken from the present 1,445 days for resolution of commercial disputes of lesser value. Ease of doing business is an index of the World Bank which refers to the dispute resolution environment in a country that facilitates an investor in deciding to set up and operate a business. Jilted lover held for throwing acid on 19-yr-old woman """

A man was arrested near here today for allegedly throwing acid at a 19-year-old woman apparently after she started avoiding him. The incident occurred at around 9.30 pm yesterday when the woman, who works in a petrol station, was walking home along with her mother and friend when the 23-year-old Shankar came on a two-wheeler, police said. He threw acid (toilet cleaner) from a bottle at her and fled, they said. The woman suffered rashes on her face and other parts of the body, Inspector K Satish said, adding, her friend also suffered "minor" rashes." Both have been admitted to hospital. Shankar, who works as a car-driver, and the woman knew each other for the past two years and had also decided to marry, but she had been avoiding him for the past two months, police said.

Man allegedly kills pregnant wife in fit of anger

A man allegedly killed his 21-year-old pregnant wife in Pandit Nagar locality here this afternoon, police said. Sariputra Shinde (25) allegedly slit the throat of his wife Ramaa Shinde, who was three months pregnant, with a kitchen knife following a quarrel over a trivial matter, said an official from the Ambad police station. Sariputra, who hails from Nikhade in Parbhani district and was working as a construction labourer absconded after the incident and the police had launched a manhunt for him, the official said.

Accused in rape and murder of six-year-old attempts suicide in

The accused in the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Odisha's Cuttack district allegedly attempted suicide inside the jail toilet by trying to hang himself with his towel, police said today. Twentyfive-year-old Mohamed Mustaq attempted to end his life yesterday and was rescued by an alert warder of the Salipur sub-jail, the police said. "Based on the report of the sub-jail superintendent we have registered another case under section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of IPC against the accused, who has already been booked under Section 376(2)(i)(m) (rape of minor) and the POCSO Act for raping a six-year-old on April 21," said Salipur police inspector D K Mallick. SC rejects Centre's plea to stay its verdict on SC/ST law

The Supreme Court today rejected the Centre's demand for a stay on its verdict on the SC/ST Act and said it favoured "100 per cent" the protection of the rights of these communities and punishing those guilty of atrocities against them. The top court also strongly disagreed with the Centre's contention that its March 20 verdict had led to loss of lives in the violence that had broken out later in several states. The Centre told the top court that its March 20 verdict, laying guidelines putting certain safeguards on the immediate arrest of a person for offences, countermanded the law enacted by the legislature and should thus be stayed and the case referred to a larger bench. In yet another horrific incident of crime against minor girls, a nine-year-old was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 55-year-old man in Guntur district, triggering outrage with locals vandalising his house and women's outfits staging protests today. NIA quizzes Filipino ISIS operative in Manila

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has questioned a key woman ISIS operative in the Philippines who was ordering Indian cadres arrested by it to carry out terror and subversive activities in the country, the agency's spokesman said. Giving details of the overseas investigations, the spokesman said that during the NIA's probe of ISIS-related cases registered in 2015 and 2016, it was found that three accused persons -- Mohd Naser (Tamil Nadu), Mohd Sirajuddin and Adnan Hasan (Karnataka) -- were in online contact with the woman identified as Karen Aisha Al Muslimah alias Karen Aisha Hamidon on platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram. Prosecuting officers have called for implementation of the Juvenile Justice Act in "letter and spirit" in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the mission of the act was to provide relief to the juveniles who are in conflict with law. "The mission of the Juvenile Justice Act is to provide relief to the juveniles in conflict with law as it is presumed that juveniles are immature," Senior Prosecuting Officer, Srinagar, Zia ur Rehman Khan said at a special training programme for police officers of the district. A bid to smuggle bovines in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district was foiled today and 10 bovines rescued, an official said. 17-yr-old killed in road accident in Kota

A 17-year-old boy was killed today after his motorcycle was hit by a speeding mini bus here, police said today. The incident took place when the deceased identified as Raghav Gautam was returning from his coaching classes for the IIT, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Bharat Kumar said.
