A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to four consecutive terms of life imprisonment by a court here for raping and impregnating his teenage daughter two years ago. Mahila Court Judge Balakrishnan yesterday awarded the punishment, which would effectively mean the man will be in prison for lifetime. The judge ordered Subramaniam of Pattukottai in the district to undergo the four life imprisonments consecutively. According to the prosecution, Subramaniam had raped his daughter after gagging and tying her limbs at their house when her mother was away in 2016. He had threatened her not to inform anyone about the incident and repeatedly assaulted the 17-year old girl sexually several times later, it said. In March the next year, the girl developed severe stomach pain and was found to be pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl a few weeks later. The kin of the Delhi gang-rape victim Nirbhaya today welcomed the life imprisonment awarded to self-styled godman Asaram in a rape case. "Asaram is a demon under the garb of sadhu...We are also feeling relieved after the Jodhpur court verdict," Nirbhaya's grandfather said. Nirbhaya's grandfather said that during the tragedy that struck his granddaughter, Asaram had defended the culprits and instead held the girl responsible for it. "We had realised then only that he is actually a demon who was portraying the image of a sadhu," he said. Four persons were arrested in connection with the killing of a person during clashes in Birbhum district on Monday over the filing of fresh nominations for panchayat elections, police said today. All of them were arrested on yesterday, they said. The four were arrested for the purpose of investigation, the Superintendent of Police of Birbhum district, N Sudheer Kumar, said. They were produced before a local court here today and remanded to seven days' police custody, a police officer said. In a named FIR, the victim's father had accused a local BJP leader of being involved in the incident. The CBI has arrested a 25-year-old woodcutter with a criminal past in connection with the rape-and-murder of a teenaged schoolgirl in the Kotkhai area of Shimla, after his DNA sample matched the genetic material found on the body of the victim and the crime scene, officials said today. The findings of the agency will bring relief to the families of five people arrested earlier by the state police as the CBI has not found any evidence of their involvement in the gruesome rape-and-murder in July last year, which had become a rallying point against the then Congress government in Himachal Pradesh. Two prime accused in the sensational Kathua gangrape and murder case of an eight-year-old girl today moved the Supreme Court opposing the plea of the victim's father seeking transfer of trial outside the state, preferably to Chandigarh. Sanji Ram and Vishal Jangotra, who have been chargesheeted by the crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police in the case, have also sought transfer of probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation besides seeking to be impleaded as parties in the petition filed by the father of the victim. An 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her neighbour while playing near his house, in the district, police said today. Forty-year-old Arumugam of Karukalachery village was arrested today, a day after the crime, they said. Playing a game of hide and seek with her friends, the girl hid herself near Arumugam's house when he dragged her into his house and sexually assaulted her, they added. The minor girl's parents lodged a complaint with the police, which conducted inquiry and arrested Arumugam this morning, police said. A case has been registered under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
The Delhi High Court today sought the Centre's response on a plea alleging "institutional discrimination" against women in recruitment for constables and drivers in the Central Industrial Security Force. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Centre and the CISF on the plea which alleged that in an advertisement, issued by the force, only male candidates were sought for "constable/driver and constable/driver-cum-pump operator for fire services" in the force. The plea by Kush Kalra, filed through advocate Charu Walikhanna, said the human rights of women were inalienable and an integral and indivisible part of human rights. The Bombay High Court today directed the Pune police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) to file a progress report on steps taken by it to secure late spiritual guru Osho Rajneesh's will and some related documents from Spain. A bench of Justices R M Savant and Sarang Kotwal directed the EOW to file the report by June 29 this year. The direction came after the EOW informed the HC that a Pune court had already issued a letter of request to a court in Spain for securing the will purportedly made and signed by Rajneesh, and other related documents, and that it would take some time. The bench was hearing a petition filed by Pune resident Yogesh Thakker.
