Asaram found guilty of raping teenager in 2013, awarded life term

A Jodhpur court today awarded life sentence to self-styled godman Asaram after holding him guilty of raping a teenage girl in his ashram five years ago, the second case of a powerful spiritual leader being convicted of a sexual offence in less than a year after Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim last August. Special judge Madhusudan Sharma's verdict, which comes as the debate over sexual violence, particularly the rape of minors, intensifies across the country, was read out in the Jodhpur Central Jail where 77-year-old Asaram has been kept for over four years. The special court for SC/ST cases convicted two other accused, Shilpi and Sharad, and acquitted two, Prakash and Shiva. "The court has awarded life imprisonment to Asaram while the two other convicts have been each sentenced to 20 years in jail," a senior police official said. Arguments for the quantum of sentencing were earlier held inside the heavily fortified jail premises, where the trial court delivered its verdict in .

CBI cracks Kotkhai rape case

The CBI has cracked the nine-month old rape and murder case of a teenaged girl in Kotkhai area of Shimla, arresting a 25-year old Himachal resident whose DNA sample matched with the genetic material found at the crime scene, officials said here today. The virtually blind rape and murder case of the girl had become a political rallying point in poll-bound Himachal Pradesh when the body of the girl was found in the forests of Kotkhai area in July last year. The local police had arrested some suspects but the CBI probe exonerated them as they had come clean during lie detector tests. The agency has now arrested one Anil Kumar whose DNA sample showed 100 per cent match with the genetic material recovered from the body of the victim and the crime scene, they said. The suspect is a Himachal Pradesh resident but was from a different area and was in hiding after the crime, they said. Naxals kill village sarpanch in C'garh

A group of armed naxals allegedly killed a 28-year-old sarpanch of a village in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, suspecting him to be a police informer, an officer said today. Somaru Ram Mandavi, sarpanch of Darbha village under Kutru police station limits, was attacked by the ultras at the village last night, Bijapur Superintendent of Police Mohit Garg told PTI. "As per the preliminary information, some armed naxals stormed into his village, located around 450 kms from here, and attacked him with an axe and sticks," the SP said adding that he died on the spot. After being alerted about the incident, a police team was rushed to the site and his body was sent for the post-mortem this morning, he said. "Mandavi was branded as a police informer by the naxals before being killed," the SP said adding that a search has been launched in the forest areas to nab the assailants.

Kotkhai rape case: Accused sent to judicial custody

The Kotkhai rape and murder case accused, who was arrested by Central Bearau of Investigation (CBI), has been sent to judicial custody till May 7.Until now, he was in police custody.The brutal gang-rape and murder of a schoolgirl in Shimla's Kotkhai created a huge uproar in the state in July.The 16-year-old victim was returning back from school when she went missing on July 4. Asaram rape case: Victim's father seeks strict punishment

The father of the teenager raped by Asaram today expressed satisfaction over the Jodhpur court verdict convicting the self-styled godman and demanded the "strictest punishment" for him. "I am happy to get justice, I thank the judiciary and the media for it," the rape victim's father said after Asaram's conviction by a Jodhpur court. "We had complete faith in the judiciary and are happy that we got justice," he told mediapersons soon after the court verdict. "For the past four years, our family members had not been coming out (of our house)...it is satisfying that the verdict has gone against him," he said. Lok Insaaf Party leader Simarjit Singh Bains booked for trespassing Ludhiana passport office

Lok Insaaf Party leader and local MLA Simarjit Singh Bains was booked today for allegedly trespassing into the Ludhiana passport office with his armed supporters, a police official said. A case was registered on a complaint of Yash Pal, the assistant passport officer Ludhiana, said Sukhchain Singh Gill, the Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana. Pal has accused the MLA of "trespassing the secured zone of passport office, bringing arms inside, misbehaving with security guard, scaring away applicants and disrupting work". He has been booked under various sections of the IPC. In his complaint, Pal claimed that Bains forcefully entered the Passport Sewa Kendra, Ludhiana with his armed supporters on Monday. The passport officer alleged that Bains and his supporters started recording videos following which applicants got scared and left the office. No arrest has been made so far, the police official said.

Sarpanch held for trying to rape woman

A Sarpanch was arrested for allegedly trying to rape a married woman at Banamalipur village in Jajpur district, the police said today. Tapas Chandra Ray, Sarpanch of Majhipada gram panchayat, was arrested from Cuttack yesterday after police launched a manhunt on the basis of an FIR filed by the 30-year-old woman. As per the complaint, Ray, a father of two, went to the house of the woman in Banamalipur while she was alone in her house on March 31 night. The Sarpanch locked the door from inside and tried to rape her, the police said quoting the FIR. When she raised an alarm, the accused fled her house. The woman narrated the incident to her husband after he returned home the same night. The victim filed a complaint with the police the next day, police said. "Based on the complaint, we conducted medical examination on the victim and recorded her statement under Section 164 of CrPC. We also started a manhunt to arrest the accused as he was on the run since filing of complaint .

Minor raped, thrashed by juvenile in Kanpur

A 13-year-old girl is said to be in a critical condition after being allegedly raped and beaten by a 16-year-old juvenile in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur Dehat district.The victim is admitted in a district hospital and her condition is said to be critical."The accused is the victim's neighbour who allegedly committed the crime in front of his sister. Thane builder gets extortion threat from gangster Ravi Pujari

A builder in the Mumbra township of Thane district has filed a police complaint, alleging that he has been receiving extortion calls from fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari, an official said. The builder, in the complaint filed yesterday with the Mumbra police, claimed that since January this year he had received several calls from a person, who identified himself as Pujari and demanded Rs 2 crore from him, he said. He also alleged that the caller said a rival builder was ready to give Pujari Rs 3 crore to eliminate him and keep him away from a disputed land project, the official at the Mumbra police station said yesterday. The builder claimed that the caller threatened him with dire consequences if he did not pay the money, he said. The group has requested the principal bench sitting here to consolidate all multiple insolvency cases filed by lenders at three different courts of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) Mumbai and hear together.
