The Supreme Court today said it was "very disturbed" at the course of developments involving public statements by the Members of Parliament (MPs) on the removal of the Chief Justice of India (CJI). The observations were made during the hearing of a petition, a few hours before the Congress and other opposition parties submitted a notice to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu for initiating impeachment proceedings against CJI Dipak Misra. The apex court said it was "very unfortunate" that despite knowing the law that till a certain point, the issue of impeachment cannot be made public, the politicians were holding public discussions. The Allahabad High Court has rejected a CBI officer's plea seeking to quash a preliminary enquiry registered against him by the agency on a complaint from an MNC. The court has also imposed costs of Rs 10,000 on him. The case pertains to a CBI preliminary enquiry registered against Superintendent of Police Sudhanshu Kumar Khare, posted in the agency's Special Crime unit in Lucknow, on the complaint of Whirlpool India Limited in January. Whirpool India had alleged that when Khare was posted at Ranchi during 2013 to 2017, he had "generated a false and anonymous" complaint against the company to pressure its executives into taking back his brother into service. The agency had in January registered a preliminary enquiry against Khare after the CBI Director gave the nod. The case is being probed by an ASP-level officer in Delhi. The Jharkhand High Court today sought the medical reports of jailed RJD chief Lalu Prasad from AIIMS-Delhi, where he is undergoing treatment, while hearing his interim bail plea on medical grounds in fodder scam cases. Justice Apresh Kumar Singh fixed May 4 as the next date of hearing Prasad's bail petition. "The high court sought the AIIMS report and asked the CBI to file a counter affidavit," Prasad's lawyer Prabhat Kumar said. A 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in a village on the outskirts of Sikandra Rao town in Hathras district, police said today. The girl had gone to a field adjoining her house when the culprits attacked her on Wednesday evening, SHO Sikandra Rao, Manoj Sharma, said. A man allegedly stole Rs 6.74 lakh cash to marry a woman he loved but when she refused, he burnt Rs 5 lakh in anger, the police said here today. Jitendra Goyal, a 22-year-old cashier in a finance company, was arrested yesterday for the theft, which reportedly took place on Wednesday, the police said. Goyal had allegedly taken away Rs 6.74 lakh from the locker of the firm on April 18, said Niranjan Sharma, in- charge of the local Police Station. The Bombay High Court today stayed the 26/11 terror attacks trial against alleged LeT operative Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal pending hearing of a plea filed by the Delhi Police against a lower court order, which asked them to provide travel documents to the accused. The Delhi police's Special Cell had approached the high court earlier this month claiming privilege over the documents and urged the court to quash and set aside the trial court's order. Justice Nitin Sambre today posted the petition for hearing on June 11, but stayed the trial against Jundal till then. The petitioner's counsel Hiten Venegaonkar argued that the documents were classified and hence could not be shared with the defence. Jundal's lawyer Yug Chaudhary, however, argued that the rights of the accused were being curtailed. Two Maoists were today arrested near Rajamundry, 135 km from here, police said. Kattama Adam alias Salman (25) and Kovvasi Kosa (24), both from Chhattisgarh, were nabbed at Etapaka, East Godavari SP Vishal Gunni said. Adam was suspected to be involved in a gun-battle in 2007 that left 12 Central Reserve Police Force personnel and three Maoists dead, police said. He was also allegedly involved in the killing of three commandos in 2009, they said.

In a gruesome incident, a man allegedly killed his wife, brother and sister-in-law in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district early morning today, hours before the wedding of his two daughters. After the killings, he walked for nearly three kilometers and jumped into a well but he was rescued, the police said. The accused Dalla Ram first slit his wife Kamla's throat and then entered the adjoining house of his brother Revta Ram (35) and brutally killed him and his wife Hariya Devi (30), SHO of Phalsoond Police Station Bhakar Ram said. The Gujarat High Court today acquitted former BJP minister Maya Kodnani and upheld the conviction of ex-Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case in which 97 people were killed by a mob. A division bench of Justices Harsha Devani and A S Supehiya, while acquitting Kodnani, said she should be given the benefit of doubt due to inconsistency in statements of witnesses. The trial court had described Kodnani as the "kingpin" of the Naroda Patiya riots, one of the worst episodes of the post-Godhra communal violence. The HC upheld the conviction of Bajrangi and found him guilty of criminal conspiracy (IPC section 120B) along with two other convicts Prakash Rathod and Suresh Jhala. The trial court had sentenced Bajrangi to life imprisonment till death. However, the HC today reduced his sentence to 21-year rigorous imprisonment without remission.
