Immediate deterrent action is necessary following uncontrolled spree of rapes and murders of women across the state, he added. "The Congress Legislature Party had during the just concluded Budget session had moved an adjournment motion to discuss crimes against women and the chief minister had promised to enact a stringent law in the next session to combat crimes against women but this would lead to delay of several months," Saikia said in a release. Six persons were arrested near here today and six kg of suspected Iridium metal seized, a top police official said today. A 38-year-old man filed a complaint against nine persons stating that they took Rs 30,000 from him, promising that they would give 'Iridium'. However, when they did not turn up he approached the police. Six persons were arrested and suspected Iridium seized from them, police said. In yet another case of rape of a minor, an 18-year-old man allegedly sexually assaulted a seven -year-old girl in Maharashtra's Parbhani district, police said today. The man was arrested today, five days after the crime, when he was trying to flee Parbhani, located around 490km from here in the Marathwada region, they said. The incident occurred on April 13 in a village near Selu town when the victim had gone to play with the accused's younger sister at his home, a police official said. When the accused's sister went out for some work and no other family member was at home, he called the girl to a room on the pretext of watching television and allegedly raped her, he said. As the girl started crying, he dropped her at her residence and left, the official said. The incident came to light when the parents of the victim took her to a doctor, the official said, adding they then approached the police and lodged a complaint. The Punjab police today arrested six people and with it, claimed to have busted an interstate gang involved in stealing fuel from petrol pumps. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police officials arrested Ranjit Singh, Partap Singh and Rajinder Singh along with two trucks from near Urapur, but the gang's leader Baba Balwinder Singh and his son Narinder Singh managed to escape from the sport in a third truck, they said. During interrogation, the accused confessed to have stolen diesel from the Aur petrol pump and they were planning to seal fuel from a petrol pump located on Machhiwara-Alamgir road. Three foreigners have been arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) sleuths here for allegedly smuggling in liquid cocaine by concealing it in condoms, officials said today. They said two Brazilians and a Nigerian have been arrested by the agency from a guest house in the Paharganj area of the central Delhi on April 16. About 2.6 kgs of liquid cocaine, a party drug, was found concealed in condoms and was kept in tin boxes by the two people from Brazil and they were supposed to hand it over to a Nigerian man here, they said. All the three have been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, they said. "The trafficking of liquid cocaine concealed in food stuff from South American countries to India is a new modus operandi being adopted by African syndicates to deceive the drug law enforcement officers," Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal Director Madho Singh said.

An Uber driver was arrested for allegedly masturbating while ferrying a woman passenger in his cab, police said today. The incident occurred on the night of April 15 in Lutyens' Delhi. The accused, identified as Shokeen Khan, was arrested and was found to be having a fake driving licence, they said. The woman had booked the cab from the airport. The Kerala government has set up a five-member medical board to ascertain the real cause of a 26-year-old man's death after alleged police torture while in custody. A 12-year-od boy died after he accidentally shot himself with a pistol of his friend's father while he was playing at the latter's home, the police said today. The incident was reported from southwest Delhi's Cantonment on Friday night, they said. Police have lodged a case against the father of the victim's friend but are yet to arrest him. The family of Ekansh has not alleged any foul play in the incident. Ekansh's friend's parents were not at home while his sister was there, the police said. The boy's friend was bringing water for his sister when they heard a gunshot from the room in which Ekansh was present. The children called their father and a neighbour following which Ekansh was rushed to a hospital where he died on Saturday morning.

A Law Ministry suggestion to restrict the definition of "contempt of court" has not found favour with the Law Commission which has said that despite amendment to the law, courts can still exercise their power to punish people for contempt as their authority flows from the Constitution and not statutes. The Department of Justice in the Law Ministry had asked the Commission to examine and consider an amendment to the Contempt of Act 1971, to restrict the definition of contempt to only "wilful disobedience of directions or judgement of court". It had sought the removal of another clause -- "criminal contempt" -- which includes "scandalising the court". "... The suggestion to delete the provision relating to 'criminal contempt' will have no impact on the power of the superior courts (Supreme Court and high courts) to punish for contempt (including criminal contempt) in view of their inherent constitutional powers, as these powers are independent of statutory provisions," the Commission .
An eight-year-old girl was allegedly molested by her neighbour in the Vivek Vihar area of Shahdara, following which the accused was arrested, the police said today.
