Gujarat HC reserves order in 2002 Ode massacre appeals case

The Gujarat High Court has completed hearing on a set of appeals in the Ode riot case where 23 people belonging to a minority community were allegedly burnt alive during the 2002 post-Godhra communal violence. Riots broke out in Ode town of Anand district and 23 accused were convicted for the deaths by a special court, 18 of whom were awarded life imprisonment. A bench of justices Akil Kureshi and B N Karia last week completed the hearing on the appeals in the case and reserved its order, said Yogesh Lakhani, the lawyer representing the convicts. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which probed the case, along with the state government and victims, has sought the death penalty for the convicts given life imprisonment and enhanced sentence to those awarded seven-year jail term. They also sought conviction of the 23 people who were acquitted in the case. The convicts have also challenged the trial court's order in the high court. Police constable booked for molesting colleague

A police constable from Navi Mumbai was today booked by the Thane police for allegedly molesting a lady constable, an official said. Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar said the accused was a member of a police party which was accompanying undertrials who were taken to the Thane district court for hearing in a van yesterday. One of the prisoners wanted to drink water and the victim asked the accused constable to loosen his handcuffs so that he could drink water, Narkar said. Upon this, the accused got annoyed and allegedly abused the lady constable and pulled her down from the van. He also kicked and touched her inappropriately, said Narkar, quoting from the complaint filed by the victim last night. The accused constable has been booked under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), the PRO added.

Haryana village bans girls from using mobiles, wearing jeans

Isaipur Khedi village's Panchayat in Haryana's Sonipat district have banned girls from wearing jeans and using mobile phones.The village panchayat issued this diktat a year ago after several incidents of elopement were reported.Speaking to ANI, Village Sarpanch Prem Singh said since the time they have implemented this rule, the situation in the village is better."Girls are not allowed to wear jeans in our village and as they misuse mobiles, we have banned that as well. I am not saying that they get spoilt, it's just it does not suit them," Singh said.Meanwhile, the girls of the village have termed the diktat as "bizarre"."This is completely wrong; the problem is in the mentality of men, not in the clothes we wear. How can they judge the character of a woman from the clothes she wears?" said one of the residents.

Police seize fake Indian currency notes worth Rs 7 crore, accused arrested

Police seized fake currency notes with the face value of Rs 7 crore in Belgaum on Wednesday.On information, police raided the Public Works Department (PWD) quarters in Vishweshwar Nagar and seized fake notes of 2000 denomination.The notes were said to be printed to be distributed in rural areas during the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections which will be held on May 12.The accused identified as Ajit Kumar Nidoni has been taken into custody.A case has been registered against him and further investigation is underway.

Vietnam arrests ex-senior officials, police amid crackdown

Vietnamese police have ordered the arrest of several former officials and police officers with alleged ties to a real estate developer who was arrested after being deported from Singapore. Realtor's house burgled

A total of 40 sovereigns of jewels and Rs 30,000 in cash were reportedly stolen from a house here last night, police said. The robbery came to light when the realtor Krishnakumar's wife woke up this morning and found the front door of the house broken open, they said. Then, she found the valuables missing from an almirah. Her husband's two-wheeler, which was parked in the compound, was also stolen, the police added. Prez condemns Kathua gangrape, murder

President Ram Nath Kovind today termed as "barbaric" the Kathua gangrape and murder case and said it was the collective responsibility of society to ensure such things do not happen with any girl in the country. SC dismisses bail cancellation plea against MLA in wife's murder case

Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking bail cancellation of Uttar Pradesh MLA Amanmani Tripathi, who is accused of his wife's murder.In 2015, Tripathi's wife Sara Singh died when the car they were travelling in met an accident on National Highway-2 in Firozabad district.However, Sara's mother Seema Singh alleged that her daughter was killed at the behest of Amanmani's father Amarmani, who, along with his wife, is serving life imprisonment for the murder of noted poet Madhumita Shukla.Soon after Sara's death, Seema demanded that the case be transferred to the CBI for investigation, which was subsequently done so on the recommendation of the then chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.Thereafter, the CBI took Aman into custody for investigation. However, the Allahabad High Court in March last year granted bail to the MLA.Following this, the CBI, last year, filed a petition seeking cancellation of his bail.

SC reserves verdict on Navjot Singh Sidhu's plea in 1988 road rage case

The Supreme Court today reserved its judgment on the appeal filed by cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict convicting and sentencing him to three years in jail in a 1988 road rage case. A bench comprising Justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul reserved the verdict after hearing the arguments. Senior advocate R S Cheema, appearing for Sidhu, said that the evidence brought on record regarding the cause of death of the victim were "indefinite and contradictory". He also said that the medical opinion regarding the cause of death of the deceased, Gurnam Singh, was "vague". The bench also reserved its verdict on the appeal filed by Rupinder Singh Sandhu, who along with Sidhu was sentenced to three years in jail by the high court in the case. Kathua case: Delhi HC slaps Rs 10 Lakh fine on media houses for revealing victim's identity

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday slapped a fine of Rs. 10 lakhs on each media house who revealed the identity of the Kathua rape-case victim.The court has decided to transfer the collected amount to Jammu and Kashmir victim's compensation fund.The court further warned that anyone disclosing rape victim's identity can be imprisoned for six-month.The next date of hearing, in this case, is slated for April 25.Earlier on April 13, the High Court issued a notice to various media houses for disclosing the identity of an eight-year-old girl who was gang-raped and killed in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.The court also prohibited the media from revealing any further identity of the victim.The alleged gangrape and murder of the eight-year-old girl, who belonged to the nomadic Muslim community, took place in January. Media houses apologise for revealing Kathua victim's identity

Media houses, issued notices for revealing the identity of the eight-year-old Kathua rape victim, today apologised before the Delhi High Court and were directed to pay Rs 10 lakh each to the Jammu and Kashmir Victim Compensation Fund. Advocates representing media houses told the court that the mistake of revealing the identity of the victim was due to their ignorance of the law and a misconception that they could name her as she was dead. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar directed that the compensation amount be deposited with the registrar general of the high court within a week and the money transferred to the Jammu and Kashmir legal service authority's account to be used for Jammu and Kashmir's victim compensation scheme. The bench also directed that wide and continuous publicity be given to the statutory provisions of law regarding privacy of victims of sexual offences and punishment for revealing their identities.

Cab driver arrested for masturbating in front of woman passenger

A cab driver was arrested on Wednesday and sent to judicial custody following a complaint by a woman passenger who alleged that the accused was masturbating while driving.Reportedly, the lady passenger said that as soon as she boarded the cab, the driver began masturbating in front of her. Man hung upside down, beaten for stealing mobile phone in Bihar

Black father killed by police in front of supermarket

Police gunned down an African American father of three using two dozen bullets in the parking lot of a Walmart supermarket in California, authorities and his lawyer has said. Diante Yarber, 26, was unarmed and parking his car in Barstow, about two hours east of Los Angeles, at the time of the incident on April 4, according to his lawyer Lee Merritt.
