Youth held for killing 5-yr-old cousin after aborted rape bid

The police have arrested a youth on the charge of killing her 5-year-old cousin following an abortive attempt to rape her here earlier this month. The 19-year-old man was taken into custody from his house in Das Bustee under Burmamines police station area yesterday evening, police said today. He allegedly slit the throat of the girl with a knife after she resisted his move to rape her on April 4 in an abandoned building and dumped the body in a dustbin, Senior Superintendent of Police Anoop Birtheray told a press conference. After the killing, he returned and joined his relatives and local people in searching for the girl. During investigation, the police found one person who had seen him coming out of the abandoned building at that time of the day. Birtheray said the police then picked him up and questioned him. SC/ST judgment of Supreme Court is basically wrong decision: Ex-CJI Balakrishnan

Former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan today said the controversial SC/ST verdict of the Supreme Court was "basically wrong" as the decision will enable perpetrators to get away from the clutches of law. Balakrishnan, the first Dalit to become CJI (January 14, 2007 to May 12, 2010) also said that this decision of the apex court has incited violence. "This is probably the first time a decision of the Supreme Court has incited violence among the people. Usually, when violence is there, the Supreme Court intervenes. The people used to accept the verdict. "Now people are not in a position to accept the verdict of the highest court of the land. It is something which is strange. This we should understand. The Supreme Court should produce decisions which are acceptable to greater number of people. It should not create violence among the society," he said. 5 get life term for murdering ex gram-pradhan, his brother

A court here has awarded life imprisonment to five people for killing a former village head and his brother in the double murder case of 2015. Additional District Sessions Judge Gaurav Kumar Srivastava also imposed a fine of Rs 38,000 on each of the accused - Satish, Dharmendra, Satbir, Sandeep and Sanjiv -- after holding them guilty under Indian Penal Code section 302 (murder) and other relevant sections. Government lawyer Jitendra Tyagi said former gram pradhan Vinod Kumar and his brother Pramod were shot dead at the New Mandi station area near here when they were on their way to attend a court hearing from their village Kasumpur on February 2, 20015. The court directed the accused that they will pay half of the fine amount to the family of the deceased.

Kathua rape victim's family should get justice: Rajnath

The family of the Kathua rape victim should get justice, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today. Singh told reporters that he is in favour of ensuring proper justice to the family of the 8-year-old girl, who was raped and killed in Kathua three months ago. "The victims' family should get justice," the minister said when asked about the case. The girl, who belonged to the nomadic Bakerwal Muslim community, had disappeared from a spot near her house in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir on January 10. A week later, her body was found in the same area. A Special Investigation Team, formed to probe the incident, has arrested eight people, including two Special Police Officers (SPOs) and a head constable, who was charged with destroying evidence. Jammu has been on tenterhooks since the brutal rape and murder.

Rapists should be executed publicly: BJP MP on Unnao case

TTE pushed out of train for demanding ID proof

A Travelling Ticket Examiner was allegedly assaulted and pushed out of a running train by six passengers as he reportedly demanded a fine from two of them for not having valid identity proof, police said today. The railway official escaped with minor injuries as the Yesvantpur-Howrah Superfast Express was moving slowly at Katpadi, near here, yesterday, they said. He lodged a complaint with Katpadi railway police who alerted their counterparts in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. One of the six assailants identified as Manick of Odisha was arrested at Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh and brought to Katpadi, police said. Ohio brothers admit to giving money to al-Qaida leader

Two brothers have admitted in federal court that they sent USD 17,000 to an al-Qaida leader who they knew was planning terrorist attacks. They are the last of four defendants to plead guilty in what prosecutors say was a scheme to collect money through fake credit card transactions and other means to support terrorism. Asif Salim, 37, and Sultane Salim, 43, both pleaded guilty in federal court in Toledo to concealing the financing of terrorism. Kathua gangrape: SC takes note of incident, issues notices to bar bodies

The Supreme Court today directed members of the bar not to obstruct judicial proceedings in the Kathua gangrape and murder case in Jammu and Kashmir as it took note of lawyers obstructing the victim's counsel from appearing in court. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud sought responses from the Bar Council of India, state bar council, Jammu High Court Bar Association and Kathua district bar association by April 19. The apex court agreed to take suo motu cognisance of the case after several lawyers who had mentioned the matter before it came out with materials about the incident. Earlier in the day, the top court had asked a lawyer to bring materials on record to take judicial note of a strike call given by Kathua and Jammu and Kashmir bar associations in relation to the gangrape and killing of the eight-year-old girl in Jammu region. NGT issues showcause notice to DUSIB over parking land in Lajpat Nagar

The National Green Tribunal has issued a showcause notice to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) over why action should not be taken against its erring officials for not handing over a piece of land in Lajpat Nagar to a traders' body for parking. A bench headed by acting NGT Chairperson Justice Jawad Rahim sought a response from the DUSIB and asked it to file a reply on the plea of the traders' body before May 14. The land, which measures around 5,000 square metres at Kasturba Niketan in Lajpat Nagar area of South Delhi, was allotted to the traders' body by the tribunal in 2015 to minimise traffic congestion in the busy marketplace. The order came after advocate Gautam Singh, appearing for the body, sought execution of the NGT order directing DUSIB to allot the land as a temporary parking site for parking of vehicles till a multi-level parking is constructed by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) in that area. Maneka says will ask for death penalty for child rapists

Arrest MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, Allahabad High Court directs CBI

The Allahabad High Court today directed the CBI to arrest BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, accused in the Unnao rape case. A bench comprising Chief Justice DB Bhosale and Justice Suneet Kumar gave the direction to the agency after the counsel for the Uttar Pradesh government informed it that Sengar has been detained for interrogation and not arrested yet. Unnao rape case: Stern action to be taken against those guilty, says Irani
