Police today arrested two men on charges of theft and recovered stolen items worth Rs 10 lakh from their possession, an official said. Mohammad Showkat and Zafar Ali, both residents of Poonch, were arrested in connection with two theft cases in Gangyal area, SP South Sandeep Choudhary told reporters here. The two men were arrested by a special investigating team which was formed after the thieves struck two houses at Digiana camp and Ambika colony of Gangyal area on March 17 and 18, Choudhary said. "After registering separate cases, the special investigating team rounded up suspected persons and maintained a sharp vigil to locate the miscreants," he said. The seized goods included gold and silver jewellery, four LCDs, a digital camera, a wrist watch and an electric transformer besides clothes, cosmetic items and other household items, the officer said. "Further investigation is going on and some more recoveries are expected," he added.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to stay its ruling, which activists say has diluted a law aimed at preventing atrocities on Dalits and tribes, as it asserted that it wanted to protect innocent people from being punished.
The Supreme Court today said those agitating against its March 20 order putting in place certain safeguards on arrests under the SC/ST Act may not have read the judgement or could have been misled by "vested interests", as it refused to keep in abeyance the verdict. The apex court, which entertained Centre's review petition against the verdict, asserted that "no provisions of SC/ST Act have been diluted" while clarifying that additional safeguards had been put in place "to protect the fundamental rights" of innocents. The top court said that the Centre's review petition will be considered in detail after ten days and the parties in the original case should file their written submissions in two days. A 24-year-old man died after receiving electric shock while putting up barricades outside the Siddhivinayak temple at Prabhadevi here today, police said. The incident took place around 3.45 am when barricades were being put up for streamlining the queues of devotees, said a senior police official. Nasim Ali Bechain Ali, an electrician and helper, got electrocuted and died on the spot after coming in contact with a live electric wire, said Divakar Shelke, a senior inspector from Dadar Police Station. Police registered a case of negligence against the contractor whom the temple management had given the job of putting up barricades, the officer said. Nobody has been arrested and a probe is on, he said.
A court here today discharged Delhi AAP MLA Manoj Kumar in six related cases of extortion filed against him in August 2015. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal absolved the MLA from the charges citing lack of evidence against him. The court, however, framed the charges against his personal assistant and co-accused Deepak Sharma in the case. Delhi police had registered as many as 17 FIRs in East Delhi against Sharma, who was then arrested. In some of the FIRs, the MLA was also made an accused. Sharma was arrested over a complaint by a ration shop owner, who had alleged that he had been extorting Rs 2,000 every month from local shop owners, and had threatened to cancel their licenses if they refused to pay up. Most of the complainants had alleged that Sharma had been extorting Rs 2,000 from each of them, the police had said. Sharma had threatened to shut down the shops of those who resisted his demand, the complainants had told the police.

The mortal remains of Arvinder Kumar, an Army gunner who was killed during an anti-militancy operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, were today consigned to flames with full military honours at his native Sariana village, about 65 km from here. His brother Prem Singh lit the pyre. Kumar joined the Indian Army on June 26, 2012. He, along with Sepoy Hetram and Gunner Nilesh Singh, suffered critical bullet injuries in a gun battle with terrorists in Kachedoora in Shopian district. He died later in a hospital. MLA Rajnish Kumar Babbi, Deputy Commissioner Vipul Ujjwal, Senior Superintendent of Police J Elanchezhian paid floral tributes to Kumar. Kumar is survived by his parents, four elder sisters and a brother. His younger brother has been serving in the Indian Army.
Lawyers practising in district and lower courts in Madhya Pradesh have been granted exemption from wearing black coats in the courtroom during summer. An office-bearer of the State Bar Council today said the dress code rules have been relaxed for lawyers practising in district and lower courts. These lawyers can do away with black coats while appearing in courts during summer months, he said. The decision was taken after different organisations of lawyers submitted memorandums in this regard to the council, he said. About one lakh lawyers will get relief from the exemption which will be in force from April 15 to July 15, the office-bearer said. Instead, lawyers can wear white shirt, black or grey trousers along with advocate band in the neck while arguing in courts, he said. However, the dress code relaxation will not be applicable for advocates practising in the Madhya Pradesh High Court and its different benches, he said.
The Delhi High Court today granted exemption to former union minister Salman Khurshid from appearing before a trial court on April 5 in a trespass case in which he was summoned as an accused. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva granted the relief to the Congress leader for one hearing before the trial court and made it clear that his counsel shall remain present before the lower court and not seek any adjournment. The court also asked the Delhi Police to file its response on Khurshid's plea seeking to quash the criminal proceedings against him for the alleged offence of trespassing in an office of Delhi Public School (DPS) society in south Delhi. It listed the matter for further hearing on May 9. According to the police, the DPS Society had alleged that on March 30, 2015, Khurshid, along with one Sharda Nayak, had trespassed into the office of the society and she forcibly occupied the office of the Chairman. A court here today discharged Delhi government's minister Kailash Gahlot in a case related to alleged violation of model code of conduct during his campaign for the 2015 state assembly elections. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal absolved the AAP MLA from the charges levelled against him, citing lack of evidence. The Delhi Police had lodged an FIR in January 2015 which had alleged that the accused was influencing the voters with free food and had disobeyed the order by a public servant. According to the FIR, the accused had violated the model code of conduct by distributing free food to around 150 people in a school here in south west Delhi on January 31, 2015. Around ten vehicles were also parked in the school in violation of the guidelines and the party flag, banners and posters were also recovered from the spot, the FIR had said.
A special investigation team was probing the case related to the alleged morphing of women's photographs taken during marriages for pornographic purpose, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the assembly today. Vijayan was replaying to a submission by C K Nanu (JD-S) on the need for a detailed probe into the complaints against the owner and staff of Sadayam studio that they had allegedly morphed photographs of women taken during marriage ceremonies and used it for porno pictures. Stating that it was a serious issue, Vijayan said two persons, Dineshan and Satheeshan, the co-owners of the studio at Vadakara in Kozhikode district, has been arrested in connection with the incident and search was on for Bibeesh, another person involved in the crime. The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra government to scrupulously follow its direction to protect the identities of people lodging complaints of noise pollution. A division bench of Justices A S Oka and Riyaz Chagla was hearing a bunch of petitions seeking strict implementation of the Noise Pollution Rules. The bench, in its August 2016 judgement, had passed several directions on the issue which included setting up of a grievance redressal mechanism. It had also asked the authorities concerned to ensure that the identity of the complainant was protected. However, during the last hearing, the bench was informed by the lawyer of a petitioner, who had lodged a complaint at the suburban Sion police station, that his name and phone number had been revealed in response to an RTI query. The Centre should take a sympathetic view on the ongoing agitation launched by Dalits over alleged dilution of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said today. Rao urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to place before the Supreme Court on how the guidelines issued by it are "punching holes" in the Act, an official release said here. A Pakistani woman and two others were acquitted by the Supreme Court today, 20 years after a triple murder case was registered against them. In 1998, Asma Nawab was alleged to have orchestrated the murder of her parents and brother over a love marriage, Geo TV reported. In 1999, the sessions court had ordered double death sentences for Asma, Farhan Khan and Javed Ahmed Siddiqui. The Sindh High Court had rejected their appeal against the death sentence in 2015 and the appeal against that order was eventually taken up by the Supreme Court. Hearing the case at apex court's Karachi Registry, the bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, accepted their appeals, nullified their sentences and ordered their immediate release, the channel said. The court ruled that there was no concrete evidence against the suspects, and the evidence presented before the court had several loopholes. The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi government to act against unauthorised water extraction in the national capital and directed it to seal the illegal borewells within two weeks. A bench headed by acting NGT Chairperson Justice Jawad Rahim directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to submit the list of all illegal borewells running without permission. The order came after Delhi government told the tribunal that the concerned Deputy Commissioners of Revenue department could not seal the illegal borewells as they did not receive complete information about them from the DJB, as was directed by the tribunal. The DJB counsel opposed the submission and said they had already furnished information about 4,872 borewells to the concerned Deputy Commissioners. Several people took to the streets in a Pakistani city today to protest against the brutal rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl and a university student, authorities said. The protests came after the minor girl was abducted in Pakistan's Punjab province when she left the house to go to a nearby grocery shop last Sunday. The girl's father said the girl was later found strangled in the fields the same day with multiple torture marks. The police registered a case of abduction, assault and murder.
