A Bhagalpur court today rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey's son Arijit Shashwat in connection with a case filed against him for allegedly triggering communal violence in the district earlier this month. Additional District and Session Judge (IV) Kumud Ranjan rejected Shashwat's bail plea. "The court pronounced a one-line order that Arijit Shashwat's anticipatory bail petition is rejected and fixed a date for pronouncing order for eight other accused persons' bail plea," Shashwat's lawyer Viresh Kumar Mishra told PTI. Mishra said the detailed order is awaited. Shashwat, 36, has been named in one of the two FIRs for leading a procession without permission of the administration in Bhagalpur on March 17. Violence had erupted after people belonging to minority community objected to loud music being played during the procession. A Bhagalpur court had issued an arrest warrant on March 24 against Shashwat and others named in the FIR.
Gold jewellery worth Rs 24.90 lakh was allegedly stolen from Shiv Sena leader Vijay Chougule's house in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, police said today. Chougule's domestic servant, who is absconding, is the main suspect in the case, said a police official. The theft took place yesterday evening at Chougule's house at Yash Paradise at Airoli, when the Sena leader and his family were out of town. It is suspected that their servant, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, broke the locker in which jewellery was kept and decamped with it. A case has been registered against the servant at Rabale police station and probe in underway, the police official added.

The police has busted an illegal arms factory in Hathia village here and arrested five people, an official said today. They were arrested during a raid last evening. Besides a few guns and bullets, around a kg of cannabis, stolen vehicles and liquor were also seized, SP (Rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said. He said following the raid, a search operation was conducted in the area and it lasted for over 12 hours. The operation was carried out by a team of personnel from 15 police stations and the PAC. The village is known to be a hub for criminal activities, the officer said. The SP said that country-made guns -- a .315 bore rifle, a .315 bore pistol and two 12 bore guns -- were seized along with cartridges. One of the accused is a wanted criminal also, he said.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) today decided to allow members of Parliament and legislative assemblies to practise as advocates, but said that those who move an impeachment motion against any judge of the higher judiciary will not be allowed to appear before that court. BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, a senior advocate, said that the decision was taken by the apex bar body to prevent the "misuse of powers" and "privileges" of a lawyer and not of a member of Parliament. The issue of the alleged role of some lawyer-turned-politicians behind reported moves to impeach judges by Parliament came up before the general council meeting of the BCI today in which the council considered a report of its sub-committee on whether members of Parliament and legislative assemblies should be allowed to practise as advocates. Pakistani authorities have arrested 52 Indian fishermen for allegedly straying into the country's territorial waters, an official said today. The latest batch of Indian fishermen was arrested on Thursday night by the Pakistan Maritime Security Forces, he said. Eight fishing boats were also seized. A judicial magistrate sent the 52 Indian fishermen to judicial remand, the official said. They will be lodged in the Malir jail here, he said. Rajesh, 28, couldn't stop crying as policemen lined up the fishermen to take them to the jail. "Most of us come from a village in Dandi near Gujarat coastal area and we didn't know we had strayed into Pakistani territory while fishing at night," he said. The DRI has arrested two men and seized fake notes of Rs 2,000, having a face value of over Rs 10 lakh, which were allegedly smuggled into India from Bangladesh for exchange with real currency in poll-bound Karnataka. Polls in the state is slated on May 12. The accused were apprehended from on-board the East Coast Express (Howrah to Hyderabad) near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh this morning. On search of their baggage, they were found to be carrying Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) in five bundles, total 510 pieces of Rs 2000 denomination currency notes, according to a press release issued by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The FICN were wrapped in newspapers and kept inside a pillow in their luggage bag, it said. Enraged over rape of a minor girl, a group of residents in the city lynched the rape suspect, police said on Saturday.
A minor girl, who had allegedly fled from her home in Assam, was found at the Kurla railway station here two days ago. The girl, resident of Guwahati, was spotted by Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) guard Anita Patil at the Kurla station on the evening of March 29, a railway police official said. As the girl looked distressed and scared, Patil asked her where she had come from. When she couldn't give a satisfactory reply, Patil took her to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials. The girl revealed that she had fled from her home in Guwahati, following which her family was contacted. She was handed over to the Government Railway Police. She would be staying at a shelter home until her parents arrive and take her back, said the official.
Three people involved in the CBSE paper leak case have been arrested along with nine juveniles, who have been detained, in Jharkhand, police said here on Saturday.The Jharkhand police said the investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) was still underway."Three people have been arrested under provisions of IPC. The Manipur government today said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe into the missing arms case reported yesterday, in which 56 pistols disappeared from the police headquarters over a period of four years. Addressing reporters here, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said a letter has been sent to NIA yesterday, after the incident came to light. "The matter relates to national security and a thorough investigation is required," Singh said. Singh, who also holds charge of the Home Department, further said that 56 auto 9 mm pistols along with 58 magazines were found missing from the state police headquarters -- Arms Kote of 2nd Manipur Rifles, Imphal, -- between 2014 and 2018. A special CBI court today set aside summonses issued to two Intelligence Bureau (IB) officers by a magistrate court in the Ishrat Jahan alleged fake encounter case. Special CBI Judge J B Pandya set aside the lower court order issuing summonses to Rajeev Wankhede and T S Mittal, who worked as assistant central intelligence officers when the alleged fake encounter took place in June 2004. The duo had challenged the summonses issued to them. The metropolitan magistrate court had also issued summonses to other two IB officers --special director Rajinder Kumar and officer M S Sinha -- but they have not moved the special CBI court challenging them. Whether the order of the special CBI court applies to all the four IB officers will be clear only after the copy of the order is received, CBI lawyer R C Kodekar said. Two persons, including a teenager, were killed when a vehicle hit their motorcycle in Akhnoor belt of Jammu district today, the police said. Ghanshyam (45) and Arun Kumar (14) were riding the two-wheeler when a car hit them in Tanda area of Akhnoor tehsil in the district. Both of them were rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared them brought dead, the police said. The bodies will be handed over to their family members after postmortem, they said, adding a case has been registered in this regard and a search is on to nab the driver of the car.
As many as 15 bovines, which were allegedly being transported illegally, were rescued after the police intercepted a truck in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district today, a police official said. A check post was set up on a road at Nanke Chak in Samba and the truck, which was coming from Kathua side, was intercepted, the police said. On checking the vehicle, 15 bovines, which were being transported without permission, were rescued, they said.
