Girl set ablaze by boy dies in hospital

A 16-year-old girl, who was battling for life after a boy set her ablaze at her house here three days back, succumbed to her injuries at a state-run hospital this afternoon, police said. The girl, who suffered over 70 per cent burn injuries after the boy, allegedly set her on fire, succumbed to her injuries at 3.30 PM today, they said. Police said the boy, a minor, had been pestering the girl to marry him. He had an argument at her residence on March 27 and in a fit of rage allegedly set her ablaze by dousing kerosene. The boy, who also suffered burn injuries in the incident, was undergoing treatment, police said.

Collegium did not follow SC guidelines on sexual harassment cases: Govt

The Supreme Court collegium had disregarded a complaint of sexual harassment made by a woman judicial officer against her superior, while considering his name for elevation to the Karnataka High Court on two occasions, senior government functionaries said today. Rejecting Justice J Chelameswar's recent charge that the executive was stalling the judiciary's recommendations on appointments, they said the government was in no hurry to take a call on the recommendation of the collegium to elevate principal district judge P K Bhat. The comments came in the wake of Justice Chelameswar's charges earlier this month in a letter to the Chief Justice of India (CJI). He had urged the CJI to consider convening a full court to take up the issue of alleged executive interference in judiciary, cautioning that "the bonhomie between the judiciary and the government in any State sounds the death knell to democracy". BCI to meet & discuss issue of impeachment motion against judges

The issue of the alleged role of some lawyers behind reported moves to impeach judges by Parliament is likely to come up before the general council meeting of the Bar Council of India (BCI) here tomorrow. The apex lawyers' body, in a release today, said another agenda of the meeting would be to consider a report of its sub-committee on whether members of Parliament and legislative assemblies should be allowed to practice as advocates. In February, the committee had recommended that MPs, MLAs and MLCs could be allowed to pursue legal practice, despite getting elected as legislators, subject to certain conditions. The release said the agenda included "the action of some of the advocates on the issue of motion of impeachment against the judges of High Court/Supreme Court". Absconder booked in rape case arrested after 14 yrs in J-K

An absconder, booked in a rape case, has been arrested after 14 years in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, police said. The absconder, identified as Abdul Gani of Dhara, was booked under section 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) (rape) and 452 RPC (House-trespass), a police official said. In another case, police arrested Mohd Saleem alais Gulshan of Bharat village in Doda, who was booked under 188 RPC (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) in 2017, he said.

Paper leak: CBSE shares exam centre details with cops

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has submitted to the police details of the examination centres sought by its Crime Branch, which is investigating the leaks of Class 10 Mathematics and Class 12 Economics papers. The police had sought details of the examination centres, their superintendents and the contacts of banks where the papers were kept for safekeep. Police said the board has furnished the details pertaining to both Delhi and Haryana to them. Yesterday, the police also "interacted" with the CBSE controller of examinations for over two hours to learn about the entire process. An official privy to the probe said things like how the paper is set, details of where the question papers are kept and how they are distributed to various examination centres were discussed with the CBSE official. Stones hurled at Har minister's car; escapes unhurt

Haryana Health Minister Anil said two people hurled stones at his official car when he was leaving the secretariat building complex in Panipat today, but he escaped unhurt. Vij, who was in Panipat to chair a grievance redressal committee meeting, said the car's front glass pane was damaged in the attack. "I was about to come out of the secretariat building complex in my car when the stones were hurled at the vehicle which broke its front pane. I and my driver were lucky to escape unhurt," Vij told PTI over phone. The accused, said to be mentally unsound, have been arrested, the Panipat police said. Jobless man sets himself afire after wife gets transfer, dies

Upset over the alleged delay in regularising the service of his wife, working in a school, an unemployed man set himself ablaze at the Collectorate here and died of burn injuries, police said today. The woman, Leo Jesintha, alleged that the school management delayed regularisation of her service and was casteist and that she was transferred to Kodaikanal because she pressed for it, police said. Disappointed, her husband Jesuraja, a diploma holder in teacher-training, set himself ablaze yesterday. People at the Collectorate rushed him to a local hospital, but he died without responding to treatment, police said Jesintha was an employee in the administration department of a school, they said.

J-K: Man held for circulating rumour on social media

A man was today arrested for circulating a rumour on social media that a shopkeeper had joined militant ranks in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the police, photograph of Aqib Farooq Mir, a shopkeeper in Beehama area of Ganderbal district, was circulated on social media on Wednesday claimed that he had joined militant ranks. "Aqib was shown as a terrorist by fake name Umar Shair Gojri alias Abu Zeeshan. Investigations revealed that Aqib is a law-abiding man running a shop in Beehama," a police official said. 'Port Trust to examine request to treat MAFI trailers on par

A ship agents association today claimed that Mumbai Port Trust has agreed to examine ship agent fraternity's request that MAFI trailers be treated on par with transshipment, and charges be levied with additional free days as per customs classification. At present, such cargo is entitled to seven free days without any wharfage for all ship agents. However, Mumbai Port is providing for only three free days without charges, and also levies wharfage. "The requests will be examined and taken up appropriately at board level, if necessary," Mumbai Port Trust Traffic Manager A K Bose was quoted in a statement issued by Mumbai and Nhava-Sheva Ship-Agents Association.

Inter-state auto-lifters gang busted, 7 arrested in UP

Uttar Pradesh police today claimed to have busted an inter-state auto-lifters gang with the arrest of seven people here. Acting on a tip off, four persons were arrested and on their disclosure three of their accomplices were nabbed, Superintendent of Police SP Ganguly said, adding 18 stolen two-wheelers were seized from their possession. The gang members were active in Mau, Azamgarh and Ballia districts of Uttar Pradesh and in adjoining areas of neighbouring Bihar, he said.

Unfortunate that some states have not given info on widows' welfare:SC

The Supreme Court has chastised several states for not giving information to the Centre on the action plan for the uplift and welfare of widows and destitute women, terming it as "extremely unfortunate". The apex court, after perusing the compliance affidavit filed by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, also observed that the information given by certain states were incomplete. A bench of Justices M B Lokur and Deepak Gupta directed all states and union territories to provide "full and complete information" to the ministry within two weeks. "A perusal of the affidavit (filed by the ministry) indicates that there are some states that have not submitted the necessary information to the Ministry ... and there are some states where the information given is incomplete. We find this extremely unfortunate," the bench noted in its order. UP: ED registers case over irregularities in Gomti river front project

The ED has registered a money laundering case to probe alleged irregularities in the Rs 1,500 crore Gomti river front development project in Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow, officials said. The central probe agency has registered a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The Enforcement Directorate (ED) did so taking cognisance of a CBI FIR that was registered in the case in December last year. The ED will probe if the alleged tainted funds generated in the case were laundered and ploughed to create illegal assets by the accused, officials said. The agency will soon issue summonses to those named in the complaint, including eight engineers of the state government. The CBI had taken over the investigation into the case after the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government ordered an inquiry into the beautification project of the Gomti river front. China's serial killer 'Jack the Ripper' sentenced to death

A court in northwest China today gave the death penalty to a serial killer, dubbed "Jack the Ripper", for killing 11 female victims, including an eight-year-old girl, between May 1988 and February 2002. Gao Chengyong, 53, was found to have robbed, raped and mutilitated his victims, according to a report in state-run Xinhua news agency. The youngest of the victims was an eight-year-old girl. The People's Intermediate Court of Baiyin City said in its verdict that the crimes happened in the northwest Gansu Province and neighbouring Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The court found he killed his victims to cover up robbery or rape in Baiyin, Gansu and Baotou, Inner Mongolia. Gao confessed his crimes in the court and said he would not file an appeal. He was arrested in August 2016 after a DNA test of one of his relatives for an unrelated crime suggested he could be linked to the serial killings. A lawyers' body has expressed grave concern over the issues raised by Supreme Court's senior-most judge Justice J Chelameswar in a letter to the Chief Justice of India urging him to convene a full court to deal with the alleged executive interference in judiciary. Union Social Justice Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot today appealed to organisations and individuals opposing the Supreme Court's verdict on the SC/ST Act to withdraw their protests in the wake of the government's decision to file a review petition challenging the order.
