Prosecutors demand 16 years prison for Indonesian politician

Prosecutors are demanding 16 years in prison for a senior Indonesian politician accused of playing a key role in the theft by officials of $170 million of public money. At a sentencing demand hearing on Thursday, prosecutors also called for fines and seizure of Setya Novanto's assets if he fails to return $7.4 million he allegedly received as part of the corruption conspiracy. Anti-corruption police allege Novanto was among about 80 people, mostly officials and legislators, who used the introduction of a $440 million electronic identity card system in 2011 and 2012 to steal more than a third of the funds. Novanto, the former speaker of Indonesia's parliament and senior member of the Golkar party, denies any wrongdoing.

Vietnam jails ex-Politburo member over oil giant's losses

A Vietnamese court has sentenced a former Communist Party Politburo member to 18 years in prison after finding him guilty of mismanagement at a state oil giant that cost millions of dollars. The former chairman of PetroVietnam, Dinh La Thang, had already been sentenced to 13 years in prison in January on other charges. The Hanoi court convicted Thang of deliberately violating economic management regulations by investing $35 million in Ocean Commercial Joint Stock Bank without approval from the board of directors. The investment was lost when the bank was acquired by a state bank at no cost. Six other defendants received from 15 months of probation to 23 years in jail. PetroVietnam and the banking sector have been at the center of an unprecedented crackdown on corruption.

DND flyway mishap: Court acquits driver, blames victim

A Delhi court has set aside the jail term of a man convicted of rash driving and killing a person on the DND flyway here, while blaming the victim for negligently crossing the busy road, which is a pedestrian-free zone. Additional Sessions Judge S K Gupta acquitted the man, who was driving a Scorpio car on the Delhi-Noida-Delhi expressway at high speed in 2014 and hit a pedestrian while he was crossing the road after using a public toilet there. "The DND Road is a busy road which connects Delhi to Noida. The deceased was crossing the road. The DND flyover is a pedestrian-free zone. "The deceased himself was negligent while crossing the road. The criminality is not to be presumed merely on the basis of accident. There is high movement of the traffic on DND road. The deceased has crossed the road without taking care of the traffic on the road. In such circumstances, it is not possible to save the accident even if the vehicle is at low speed. Can't delete father's name from child's birth record: BMC tells HC

The city civic body has told the Bombay High Court that it has no powers to delete a birth or death-related entry from its records, while responding to a single mother's plea seeking a birth certificate for her child without the father's name. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's birth registration department filed an affidavit in the court yesterday, stating that it did not have the authority to issue a birth certificate in the present case, without the name of the child's biological father. The BMC was responding to a previous direction of a bench of Justices A S Oka and R I Chagla, hearing the plea of a 31-year-old woman from Nallasopara town in neighbouring Palghar district. In her plea, the woman claimed that she was unmarried and that she gave birth to a girl through the test tube method in August 2016. Draw a list of IPS officers facing criminal charges: CIC to MHA

The Central Information Commission has directed the Home Ministry to draw a list of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers facing criminal charges. The order of Information Commissioner Yashovardhan Azad came on the plea of activist Nutan Thakur who had demanded from the ministry the details of criminal cases registered against different IPS officers across the country. In its response, the police wing of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has said the files in connection with registration of criminal cases against IPS officers are not maintained by the Police-I Division Ministry. The PIO said since Police Division, MHA does not record such details of criminal cases registered against IPS officers, the query was transferred to National Crime Record Bureau. Body of infant child found in Pachin river

: A body of an infant girl child was found floating in Pachin river at Borpani in Naharlagun, police said. Naharlagun Police station Investigation Officer Sushant Jha said that as per information from locals, the body was spotted at around 2.30 PM yesterday. The body was fished out and it was found to be 4-5 days old, he said. Jha said that investigation revealed that there was no such institutional delivery in the Naharlagun township and if the parents hailed from the town, it was possible that the delivery might have been done at home as the umbilical cord was found hanging from the body. The body has been kept at R K Mission Hospital morgue for the next 72 hours for identification after which post mortem would be done. The DNA would be preserved, Jha added.

Man held for operating fake branch of private bank

One person allegedly operating a fake branch of a private bank was arrested in Mulayam Nagar locality here, police said today. Superintendent of Police SP Ganguly said that following reports about a fake branch of Karnataka Bank Ltd, bank officials from Varanasi and Delhi came here yesterday and on the basis of their report, Vinod Kumar Kamble was arrested. Over Rs 1.37 lakh cash, three computers, a laptop, two mobile phones, a printer, some bank passbooks, pay-in and deposit slips and other items were recovered from him, the SP said. SC/ST Act: Govt to file review next week

The government is set to file a review petition before the Supreme Court next week challenging its order banning automatic arrest and registration of cases for alleged harassment of SCs and STs. Top law officers are constantly brainstorming with officials of the ministry of Social Justice to prepare a credible review plea, highly-placed sources in the government said. "The review will be filed by Wednesday (next) as by then the grounds for the review will be ready," a senior functionary said. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today that the government has taken note of the Supreme Court judgement about laying down new norms about the SC/ST Act. "I have already instructed my ministry to consider the desirability of filing a review. Appropriate follow up actions are being taken," he said. Ex-pilot moves NCLT to initiate insolvency proceedings against AI

A former Air India pilot has dragged the national carrier to the National Complany Law Tribunal (NCLT) seeking initiation of insolvency proceedings against it, saying the airline has been unable to clear his dues. Captain Subodh Kumar, who served Air India (AI) for 28 years, has sought the settlement of his claims of Rs 67.84 lakh from the airline, alleging there were discrepancies in the payment of his salary and allowances between 2012 and 2016. Seeking initiation of insolvency proceedings against AI, Kumar alleged that the airline had deducted substantial amount of salary, allowances and benefits payable to him and also failed to pay him the salary for January, 2016. "In view of the foregoing, it is apparent that the corporate debtor company (AI) is commercial insolvent and is unable to pay its debts. Two more nabbed in case of pregnant woman's killing in Thane

The police has nabbed two more persons, including a juvenile, in connection with the killing of a 25-year-old pregnant woman and disposing of the body earlier this month, an official said today. The woman's husband, Kalpesh Thackeray (30), was earlier arrested for allegedly strangulating her to death while his two friends held her hands and legs at his residence in Ambadi village here on the night of March 9. Later, the trio took Mahi's body in a four-wheeler and buried it in a nearby forest, the police official said. The husband lodged a complaint with the police on March 12, claiming that his wife was missing from the house since March 10. However, acting on inputs provided by some locals, the police detained the husband. The official said that during questioning, Thackeray had confessed that he killed his wife and dumped the body. Three arrested for killing class mate

Three students have been arrested for allegedly killing one of their class mates and throwing his body in Ganga canal at Jansath town near here, the police said today. The body of Class X student Sameer was recovered from the Ganga canal yesterday and following a preliminary probe ibnto his killing, the victim's class mates Shubham, Bharat and Faiz were arrested for their alleged role in the killing. Circle Inspector S K S Pratap said the police recovered the body of Sameer, reported missing, and was sent for the postmortem examination. The complaint lodged with the police by the victim's family had alleged that Sameer had gone with his three class mates, who had killed him thrown his body into the Ganga canal. Meanwhile, a mob, irate over the killing blocked a main road here following which extra police personnel were deployed to evict them. ED attaches IAS officer's properties worth 2.51 crore

The Enforcement Directorate has seized properties worth over Rs 2 crore of a senior IAS officer of Bihar cadre, who had been charged with amassing huge wealth during his tenure as the district magistrate of Munger and the commissioner of Patna Municipal Corporation. He is presently posted as director of employment and training with the state labour department. A court in southern Thailand has sentenced six men to death for carrying out the execution-style killings of eight members of one family, including three children, in a conflict over an unpaid loan. The Krabi provincial court yesterday found them guilty of conspiracy to murder and related charges for the killings during a home invasion last July. Several defendants pleaded guilty to some charges, which would normally result in a reduction of their sentence, but the court said it did not commute the sentences because the crime was "deeply upsetting and causing public fear." 2-yr RI to Bangladeshi living in India without valid passport

A Palghar court has sentenced a 54-year-old Bangladeshi national to two years rigorous imprisonment for staying here without a valid passport. Additional Sessions Judge J R Mulani, of the court at Dahanu, also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the accused - Babu Razak Mandal - who was serving as a priest at a temple in the district. Additional Public Prosecutor Manisha Parmar told the court that following a complaint by a local resident about Mandal staying in the country without valid documents, the Dahanu police had arrested him in September 2013. The accused was tried under Indian Penal Code sections pertaining to cheating, forgery, using as genuine a forged document, and relevant provisions of the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act. The judge pronounced the punishment yesterday, observing that the prosecution proved the charges against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.
