The Supreme Court today agreed to hear a plea seeking a CBI investigation into the reasons behind the suicide by a 16-year-old girl who, according to her father, took the extreme step as she was allegedly "sexually exploited, oppressed and harassed" by certain teachers and officials of her school. The petition by the girl's father was mentioned for urgent listing before a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud which agreed to hear it next week. The father in his plea for CBI probe filed through advocate Sushil Tekriwal, has alleged that the Uttar Pradesh police has "botched up and hushed up the entire investigation". Two persons were arrested and 102 kgs of poppy allegedly recovered from them in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. A check-point was set up on a highway at Tikri area and during checking, the police party intercepted one oil tanker last evening, an officer said. During the search of the vehicle, 102 kg of poppy was recovered, he added. Two persons - Puran Chand and Sudesh Singh - were arrested, he said. A case was registered at Rehmbal police station and investigation is on, he said.

After a nearly 24-year trial, a special court has convicted a former Punjab National Bank manager and three private persons in a loan fraud case and sentenced them to five years rigorous imprisonment, a CBI official said today. The Tis Hazari court in its recent order also imposed fines ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh on Charanjeet Arora, PNB manager in 1992 when the case was registered, as well as Sushil Kumar Gupta, Narendra Kumar Gupta and Manoj Kumar Gupta, CBI spokesperson R K Gaur said. He said the CBI had registered the case following allegations that Sushil Kumar Gupta, then director of Pankaj Finance and Leasing Limited (PFLL), and Arora and the other accused entered into a criminal conspiracy with each other. Forty-one children were among the 64 people killed in a fire that ripped through a shopping mall in the Siberian city of Kemerovo at the weekend, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported today. "There are names of 41 children in the list of those who died," RIA Novosti quoted a source in the regional emergencies services as saying.
A constable died and 16 other police officers sustained injuries early today when their bus overturned after colliding head-on with a truck on NH-31 in Bihar's Nawada district, the police said. The bus, with 25 policemen on board, was on its way to Nawada town from Rajauli sub-division area around 1.30am when the truck hit it near Chhapra Mor, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Upendra Prasad said. The truck driver, however, managed to flee the spot, he said. The injured officers were rushed to the Nawada Sadar Hospital, where constable Aakash Kumar (25) succumbed to his injuries. The other policemen, who were injured in the accident, have been referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), the SDPO said, adding that the condition of another constable, Mukesh Kumar, has been stated to be serious. "An investigation has been initiated into the incident and the police are making all efforts to trace the truck driver," Prasad asserted.
There is "no prima facie evidence" of any leakage of the Physics question paper for the March 21 Kerala State Higher Secondary examination for the plus two students, the police said today. The Cyber crime police had registered a case following the reports of the leakage of the Physics question paper through WhatsApp. The investigation by the Cyber police wing of the state crime branch revealed that there was no prima facie evidence of the leakage of the question paper, State Police chief Loknath Behara said. The investigation would continue, DGP Behara said in a statement here. Kerala Education Minister C Raveendranath had on March 23 stated in the state assembly that there was no confirmation that the question paper had been leaked. A Thane court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to life in jail for killing his wife, relying on the deposition by the couple's two minor children and other witnesses. While awarding the life-long jail term to convict Sadaphal Hariram Yadav, Additional Sessions Judge S C Khalipe also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on him. During the trial, Additional Public Prosecutor Vandana Jadav told the court that Yadav, a resident of Vartak Nagar in Thane city, had married Usha about 15 years ago and had two children from the marriage. Yadav and his family members, however, later started ill-treating and harassing Usha for dowry. In 2007, the victim had lodged a complaint with an NGO against her husband and in-laws for ill treating her, prompting them to assure the victim against harassment. A 7-year-old boy and his mother accidentally slipped and fell into a well in their garden at Gobichettipalayam in the district, police said today. Three young children were charred to death in a fire that engulfed their house in Tendu village under Robertsganj Kotwali here, the police said today. The victims were sleeping in the house with their mother when the house suddenly caught fire last night, the police said. Though the mother was able to save one of her daughters, three other children identified as Parvin, 5, Rukhsar, 6, and Shahid, 4, died, the police said, adding that bodies have been sent for post mortem examination. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, the police added.

The victim, Ramdev Maurya who was suspicious of his wife Devi having extra-marital relations and had planned to give his property to his brother, had a fight with his wife yesterday after which she, along with four others, axed him to death, SP Jugal Kishore said today. A Michigan State University official who oversaw Larry Nassar is facing criminal charges amid an investigation into the handling of complaints against the former sport doctor, who is in prison for sexually assaulting patients under the guise of treatment. William Strampel was in jail pending an arraignment today, Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth told The Associated Press. He declined to say what charges Strampel faces because the probe is being led by the Michigan attorney general's office. A spokeswoman for Attorney General Bill Schuette declined to comment. A news conference was scheduled for Tuesday, two months after Schuette appointed a special assistant attorney general to investigate.
