Naxal commander arrested in Noida

Police on Monday arrested a Noida commander who was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head.The arrested Naxal commander, identified as Sudhir Bhagat. Bhagat, is accused of a bomb blast in a factory and several murders and massacres.A native of Muzaffarpur in Bihar, Bhagat had been staying at Harola in Noida Sector 5 since 2015 with a fake ID and was studying B.Tech from Divya Jyoti College in Modinagar.A revolver was recovered from the Naxal commander.

Case filed against 21-yr-old youth for 'molesting' minor girl

A case has been registered against a 21-year-old youth for allegedly molesting a minor girl, who turned down his love proposal, at Jenapur village of Odisha's Jajpur district, the police has said. The accused, Basanta Dalei alias Ganja, is on the run and the police are making efforts to trace him, said Susanta Kumar Das, the inspector-in-charge of Jenapur police station. "We have filed an FIR under IPC sections 354 (assault or using criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty) against the accused, a resident of local Baramanduli village of the district," he said. 5-yr-old kidnapped from Maha, found dead in a toilet in Guj

A five-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped by an unidentified woman from Palghar district in Maharashtra and was later found dead in a toilet at Navsari railway station in Gujarat, the police said today. The victim was kidnapped from Nalasopara in Palghar on Saturday night last week. Her body was found in a ladies' toilet at Navsari railway station in south Gujarat on Sunday evening, the Government Railway Police (GRP) officialsaid. The police suspect that the girl was killed after being kidnapped, he said. He said after the postmortem at the Navsari civil hospital, the body was yesterday handed over to the Palghar police officials who had come along with the father of the deceased to Navsari, which is located around 280 km from Ahmedabad and about 200 km from Nalasopara. Kamala Mills co-owner withdraws plea against arrest from SC

A co-owner of Mumbai's Kamala Mills today withdrew from the Supreme Court the plea against his arrest in the case related to the fire tragedy that claimed 14 lives in December last year. Ravi Surajmal Bhandari withdrew his habeas corpus petition after a bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan asked him to approach the trial court to seek bail. A habeas corpus petition is a writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a court. Bhandari had claimed in his plea that he cannot be held liable for the fire tragedy and had termed his arrest "illegal detention". The apex court, on the last date of hearing, had asked how a habeas corpus can be filed when the person is in judicial custody. Kamala Mills is a huge commercial complex in central Mumbai and houses more than 50 restaurants and hundreds of corporate offices. Khap interference in marriages absolutely illegal: SC

The Supreme Court today termed as "absolutely illegal" the interference by illegal assemblies, like 'khap' panchayats, in marriages of two consenting adults and laid down guidelines to prevent such intrusions. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said the norms laid down by it would remain in force till a suitable legislation is is enacted by Parliament. The apex court's ruling came on a plea by NGO Shakti Vahini, which had moved the apex court in 2010 seeking protection of couples from honour killings.

292 crude bombs seized in Thane; one held

The city police has seized 292 low intensity crude bombs and arrested a person for the illegal possession of the explosives, an official said today. The accused told the police that the crude bombs, locally known as 'dukkar bombs' (a pig is called as dukkar in Marathi), were meant for killing wild animals, he said. Acting on a tip-off, the officials of the city police's Crime Branch kept a tab on the accused, identified as Pravin Patil (34), and nabbed him from Daighar area here on Sunday evening, senior police inspector Nitin Thackre said. During a search of the bag that the accused was carrying, the police found 292 crude bombs worth Rs 2 lakh in it, he said. Patil told the police during questioning that the explosives were used to hunt and kill wild animals, specially pigs, for their skin and meat, Thackre said. The former head of the Michigan State University department in which serial sexual abuser Larry Nassar worked has been arrested, a local sheriff said Monday. "I can confirm he is in jail," Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth told AFP when asked about ex-dean William Strampel. The Sheriff declined to say what Strampel is charged with but added that the arraignment was to take place the following day. Nassar abused girls and young women under the guise of medical treatment, and was sentenced to what will amount to life in prison. Mumbai: 8 Bangladeshi nationals arrested for illegal stay

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested eight Bangladeshi nationals from Mumbai's Kandivali area on Sunday, who were staying illegally in India without any valid documents.An Indian PAN card and Aadhaar card were also seized from two of the accused.On receiving specific information about illegal migrants in Laljipada, Kandiwali, Charkop area, the ATS conducted a search in the area and apprehended them.Following sustained enquiry, the arrested persons confessed to being Bangladeshi nationals and that they were living illegally.All eight accused have been sent to police custody up to March 31 while further investigation is under progress to detect any terror links.

Delhi court to hear final arguments against Abu Salem in 2002 extortion case

Delhi's Patiala Court will on Tuesday hear the final arguments in a case against gangster Abu Salem in 2002 Delhi extortion case.Last month, the court had issued fresh production warrant against the gangster.On January 16, Salem claimed that the prosecution did not have enough evidence against him in the case.Through his lawyer, the gangster also claimed that his trial in the case violated an order by which he was extradited to India from Portugal in 2005.Salem is facing trial for allegedly demanding Rs. 5 crores as protection money from Delhi businessman Ashok Gupta in 2002.He has already been granted bail regarding the case; however, he continues to be in jail in various other cases, including the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

SC to continue hearing Sidhu's plea in road rage case

The Supreme Court will on Tuesday continue hearing an appeal filed by cricketer-turned-politician, Navjot Singh Sidhu in three decades old road rage case.Earlier on March 22, Sidhu concluded his arguments in connection with the case before the apex court.Sidhu, a minister in the Punjab government, had moved the Supreme court challenging Punjab and Haryana High Court's order that sentenced him and co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu to three years in jail.During the hearing at the Supreme Court on March 22, the ex-cricketer who was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, in the case, submitted that he is innocent.Sidhu, who had beaten up the victim, Gurnam Singh, said that the blow was not fatal and that the latter died of heart attack.Sidhu added that it was also being proved by the medical report that Gurnam died due to sudden heart failure.On March 22, the SC had begun hearing the appeal that has filed by the former cricketer.

ED to begin attaching Vijay Mallya's properties

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) will on Tuesday begin attaching the properties of liquor baron Vijay Mallya, under Section 83 of the Criminal Procedure Code.Section 83 of the Criminal Procedure Code mandates attachment of the property of an absconder.Earlier a Delhi court had declared Mallya as proclaimed offender for evading summons.As per the case registered by the ED, Mallya had allegedly paid USD 200,000 to a British firm and some European countries for displaying Kingfisher logo in Formula One World Championships in London in 1996, 1997 and 1998.The court had earlier in 2016 lifted the exemption granted to Mallya from mandatory personal appearance in the case of evading summons in Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA)'s violation case.The investigative agency also claimed that the money was paid without prior approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in violation of the FERA norms.

SC to hear plea filed by Kamala Mills' co-owner

The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear an appeal filed by the co-owner of Kamala Mills, Ravi Surajmal Bhandari seeking his release from the jail in connection with a fire incident that claimed 14 lives last year.In his petition, Ravi Surajmal Bhandari has claimed his arrest was an illegal detention and said that he could not be held liable for the fire tragedy.Earlier, the Bombay High Court had dismissed Bhandari's bail application.Earlier on January 25, a Mumbai court rejected the bail applications of all five accused- Yug Tuli, Yug Pathak, Abhijit Mankar, Jigar Sanghvi and Kripesh Sanghvi, in connection with the fire case.The massive fire that broke out at the two pubs in the Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai in December last year claimed 14 lives and left several others injured.

Naxals kill youth leader in Bijapur

A youth leader from Chhattisgarh's Bijapur, who was allegedly attacked by Naxals, has lost his life in the wee hours of Tuesday.The youth was reportedly attacked with sharp objects in Bhopalapatnam area of Bijapur.The deceased has been identified as former district panchayat member Jagdish Kondra.After the attack, Jagdish Kondra was rushed to Sironchha Hospital in Gadchiroli district where he succumbed to his injuries.

Brazil court rejects Lula's latest appeal

A Brazilian court today rejected former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's latest appeal against a corruption conviction that could see him sent to prison for 12 years and prevented from making a political comeback. The three judges at the lower appeals court in Porto Alegre unanimously turned down Lula's appeal on technical issues to his conviction and sentencing, the official Agencia Brasil reported. In theory, the ruling meant Lula might have been ordered immediately to begin his sentence of 12 years and one month for accepting a luxury seaside apartment as a bribe from a construction company seeking contracts with state-controlled oil giant Petrobras. Suspected drug trafficker arrested from UP

A 30-year-old suspected drug trafficker, who was carrying a reward of Rs one lakh on his arrest, was arrested and heroin worth over Rs four crore was recovered from his possession, police said today. The accused, Riyaaz Khan alias Babu, was arrested from his brother's house in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly by a team of special cell, they added. GDA guard suspended for beating up boy

A Ghaziabad Development Authority guard has been suspended by vice-chairperson Ritu Maheshwari for allegedly thrashing a minor boy, who is a son of a woman sanitation worker. The boy was allegedly tied with a string on the premises of the GDA. Maheshwari said the errant guard, Rakesh Babu, has been suspended for beating up the boy. A video of the beating of the minor boy went viral on social media. The guard told officials that they boy had stolen a kettle.
