Kerala IS recruitment case: Woman operative sentenced to 7 yrs RI

An NIA special court today sentenced a 30-year-old woman operative to seven years rigorous imprisonment in connection with Kerala IS recruitment case. Special Judge S Santhosh Kumar awarded the sentence after convicting Yasmeen Mohammed Zahid under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The woman was also found guilty under Indian Penal Code sections 120B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy) and 125 (Waging war against any Asiatic Power in alliance with the Government of India). The special court in Ernakulam also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on her. Zahid, who hailed from Bihar, is the second accused in the case investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). NIA prosecutor Arjun Amabalapatta submitted that the issues related to IS is not just confined to Kerala or India. Karti shall not be arrested till April 16 in Aircel-Maxis cases: Court

A day after securing bail from the Delhi High Court in INX Media case, Karti Chidambaram today got another relief from a city court which granted him protection from arrest till April 16 in Aircel-Maxis matter arising out of the 2G spectrum cases lodged by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED). Special Judge O P Saini granted the relief to him considering that both the investigative agencies sought three weeks to file their responses on the anticipatory bail plea moved by Karti, son of former union minister P Chidambaram. The court, which pronounced the order in a packed courtroom, also said that Karti shall not leave the country without its permission and will appear before the investigating officer as and when directed to join the investigation. Production warrant against Abu Salem for Mar 27 in extortion case

A court here today issued a production warrant against gangster Abu Salem and directed the authorities to bring him before it on March 27 in connection with an extortion case. Additional Sessions Judge Tarun Sehrawat's direction came after the jail authorities informed the court that they would not be able to produce Salem before it today. The matter was scheduled for the final hearing. It relates to an extortion case lodged in Delhi, in which Salem had allegedly demanded Rs 5 crore as protection money from businessman Ashok Gupta, a resident of Greater Kailash in south Delhi, in 2002. Salem had, on January 15, contended in the court that his trial in the case violated the order by which he was extradited to India. He had also told the court that the prosecution did not have evidence to prove that he had demanded money from the businessman or that the phone number from which the call was made to the complainant belonged to him. Stalked by neighbour, girl commits suicide

A Class 12 student committed suicide in the Bakhtawarpur area in Rohini on being allegedly stalked and harassed by a neighbour, police said today. The incident was reported to the police yesterday. In a suicide note, the girl claimed that she was taking the extreme step owing to the harassment by a neighbour, they said. Police said they have registered a case and efforts are being made to arrest the 20-year-old man, who was allegedly stalking her.

Gold valued at over Rs 50 lakh seized in 5 separate cases

Over 1.7 kg gold,valued at over Rs 50 lakh has been seized by customs officials at the international airport at nearby Nedumbassery in five separate cases. During the March 18-March 24 period, the Customs Intelligence team seized a total of 1718.49 grams of gold in five separate cases, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said. The seized gold was valued at Rs 53.45 lakh, he said. It included seizure of five gold biscuits, each weighing 116.64 gms from a Malappuram based passenger who arrived here from Dubai by an Indigo flight early this morning, Kumar said. He said intelligence officers were keeping a tight vigil on the movements of suspected passengers in and out of Kochi International Airport.

NIA sentenced ISIS recruiter to 7 years in prison

National Investigation Agency (NIA) court here on Saturday sentenced Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) recruiter Yasmeen Mohammed Zahid to seven years in prison in ISIS Kasaragod module case.The case relates to the activities of Kasaragod district's 14 people, who along with their families had exited India between May and July 2016 and joined the ISIS.Zahid, a native of Sitamarhi district, Bihar, has been convicted under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) read with 125 (waging war against country)of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) besides sections 38, 39 and 40 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The court has awarded punishment of seven years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) with a fine of Rs. 25,000 to her.An investigation by NIA revealed that the principal accused Abdul Rashid Abdulla had recruited the other accused persons in this case including Yasmeen Mohammed Zahid by conducting classes at Kasaragod and other places since Ramadan 2015, in support of the terrorist ...

Remark on Mahadayi water tribunal a 'mistake': Goa Minister

Goa Minister Vinod Palyekar today apologised for his remark that the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal had a "soft corner" towards the tourist state which is locked in a bitter row with neighbouring Karnataka. The water resources minister said it was a "mistake" on his part to give such a statement and maintained he did not intend to show any disrespect to judiciary or judges. The tribunal is hearing an old dispute between Goa and Karnataka over sharing of water of the Mahadayi river (called Mandovi in the tiny coastal state). "I will never disrespect judiciary or Judges. If I have said something in the flow of speech then I am sorry. I uttered it by mistake," Palyekar told reporters here. HC reserves order on Nedumaran's plea to return books

The Madras High Court today reserved orders on a plea from Tamil Nationalist Movement leader Pazha Nedumaran, seeking return of his books, allegedly seized by police for his support to Tamil Eelam (separate tamil state). Last week, the First Additional Sessions Judge had said if the books were circulated, it would disturb the minds of the readers and the peace and tranquility of the public. Hence, the books would not be returned to Nedumaran, the judge had said. Nedumaran was arrested in 2002 for publishing books supporting Eelam and released in 2007.

Karti gets protection from arrest till April 16 in Aircel-Maxis case

A Delhi court today granted protection to Karti Chidambaram from arrest till April 16 in Aircel-Maxis matter arising out of the 2G spectrum cases lodged by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Special Judge O P Saini gave the agencies three weeks to file a detailed reply on the anticipatory bail plea of Karti. The court, which pronounced the judgement in a packed courtroom, also said that Karti shall not leave the country without its permission. Man held for repeatedly raping girl

A man from Bhiwandi town in the district was arrested today for allegedly repeatedly raping a 17-year-old girl and impregnating her, police said. The accused was identified as Lavkush Mourya, 22, who worked in a dyeing company in the powerloom town. "The accused and the girl's father worked in the same company. On December 11, which was the victim's birthday, the accused sexually assaulted her and thereafter committed the same crime on several occasions on his company's premises," senior inspector S D Jadhav of Narpoli police station said. He threatened the girl with dire consequences if she revealed about to anyone. The parents of the girl, who is now two months pregnant, lodged a complaint with the police yesterday, police said. The accused has been booked under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Further investigation is on.

Aircel-Maxis case: ED opposes Karti's anticipatory bail

Tejashwi Yadav alleges threat to Lalu's life

Fake note racket busted, 2 arrested

Police in Kairana have arrested two people and claimed to have busted a fake Indian currency note racket. According to Circle Officer of Police Rajesh Kumar Tiwari, a police team intercepted a car in Kairana in neighbouring Shamli district and recovered fake notes with a face value of Rs 4 lakh. Two people -- Gaurav Singh and Sagar Dhiman -- were arrested. Police also seized scanner and printer from their possession. During interrogation, the duo told police that they used to buy drugs from dealers in Haryana, Delhi and Punjab using fake currency notes.

Minor gangraped and set ablaze

A minor girl was allegedly gangraped and set on fire at Dhaniabheti Lalung Gaon in Nagaon district, police said today. One Zakir Hussain and four others raped the Class-V girl when she was alone at home after returning from school last evening, they said. After committing the crime the rapists poured kerosene oil on her and set her ablaze. The girl died this morning at the B P civil hospital here where she was admitted in a critical condition. The police was looking for Zakir Hussain and his associates. Angry locals attacked Zakir Hussain's house in protest, while students of the girl's school and the All Assam Students union (AASU) demanded arrest of the accused.

RJD, BJP cross swords over Lalu's sentence in fodder scam case

Reacting to the toughest ever sentence awarded to Lalu Prasad in a fodder scam case, the RJD today termed the CBI investigation "politically motivated" and the BJP said the law took its own course. "It is no rocket science to see that the probe was politically motivated. I do not wish to say much about the judgment since one cannot expect a verdict to be fair and just if the investigation itself was faulty," RJD national spokesman Manoj Jha told PTI. ED moves Delhi HC against bail granted to Karti's CA

The Enforcement directorate (ED) moved Delhi High Court against bail granted to Karti Chidambaram's chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman in connection with the INX Media case.The ED had arrested Bhaskararaman from a hotel in Delhi on February 16. Following this, a Delhi court had sent him to 14 days of judicial custody on February 26.Bhaskararaman, on February 28, had filed a bail plea in a Delhi court in connection with the said case.In May 2017, the ED registered a money laundering case against Karti for his role in facilitating FIPB clearance for INX Media Ltd and its directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.He illegally took service charges for getting the FIPB clearance to the INX Media for receiving funds from abroad worth Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father was the finance minister in the Congress-led UPA Government.

Fodder scam: Lalu to serve 7-year jail term consecutively, says CBI court
