Man arrested for raping film artiste after offering ride

A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a film artiste last month, police said today. The man, identified as Pradeep Tiwari alias Chintu, was picked up yesterday by personnel from Unit 12 of Mumbai Police's Crime Branch from an autorickshaw stand in suburban Dahisar, officials informed. Officials said that Tiwari was a habitual offender and had been charged with nine cases of rape and sexual harassment since 2003. Police said that Tiwari had offered the 31-year-old victim a lift on his motorcycle in the early hours of January 12 when she was returning from a photoshoot in Vasai. The victim, a resident of suburban Versova, was waiting to hail an autorickshaw in Dahisar when Tiwari chanced upon her. Police said that instead of taking the victim to Dahisar railway station as was agreed upon, Tiwari took her to an isolated building enroute and allegedly raped her. Tribal man beaten to death in Kerala, 7 taken into custody

A 30-year-old tribal man was allegedly beaten to death by local people who accused him of stealing food articles from some shops at forest-fringe town Agali near here, triggering protests across the state today. Seven persons, including two who allegedly had a direct role in the yesterday's incident, had been detained, police said. Tribals and human rights activists staged protests in various parts of the state after photos and visuals of the fatal attack went viral on social media besides being telecast by TV channels. "Local people killed my son. He would have lived somehow. The guilty should be punished," the victim's mother Malli told TV channels. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the incident, describing it as a "blot on Kerala's progressive society." Endangered pangolin, worth Rs 40 lakh, seized, two arrested

Police today arrested two people for trying to sell a pangolin, a rare and highly endangered insectivore, with officials claiming that the animal was worth Rs 40 lakh in the illegal wildlife market. Acting on a tip-off, personnel from the Crime Branch's Unit V kept watch and arrested the duo from near a temple in the Wagle Estate area of the city. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mukund Hatote said the pangolin was worth Rs 40 lakh in the illegal wildlife trade. He added that investigations were on to find out who was supposed to buy the pangolin. Inspector Jairaj Ranavre of the Crime Branch said that the two, identified as Ashok Jadhav (29) and Santosh Butala (30), were arrested and charged under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Chinas senior justice official charged with bribery

China's former senior justice official has been charged with graft and corporate bribery to secure illegal benefits, state media reported today. Lu Enguang was the former head of the political division of Ministry of Justice. The indictment paper has been delivered to the Intermediate People's Court of Anyang City, Henan Province, by the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) said today. Lu is accused of offering significant amounts of money and gifts to officials to secure illegitimate benefits for himself and the companies under his control, according to the SPP. The prosecutors interrogated him and listened to his lawyer's opinions, the SPP said, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Thousands of officials of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) have been prosecuted under the anti-graft campaign launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping since 2013.

California couple charged with torture of kids due in court

A California couple charged with torturing their children by starving, beating and shackling them is due in court. David and Louse Turpin are scheduled to appear Friday in a Riverside courtroom for a conference about their case. They have pleaded not guilty to torture and other charges and each is held on $12 million bail. The couple was arrested last month after their 17-year-old daughter escaped from the family's home in Perris, California, and called 911. Authorities said the home reeked of human waste and evidence of starvation was obvious, with the oldest sibling weighing only 82 pounds. The case drew international media attention and shocked neighbours who said they rarely saw the couple's 13 children, who range in age from 2 to 29. Authorities said the abuse was so long-running the children's growth was stunted.

Scribe found dead in UP

A 35-year-old scribe was today found dead in the Utraula police station area here, police said. Anjani Maurya, who worked with a Hindi newspaper published from Lucknow, had left home yesterday and did not return. His body was recovered this morning, SP Pramod Kumar said. Teenage girl hacked to death in MP

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly hacked to death with a sword by an unidentified man outside her school at Kotma town here in the district, the police said today. The incident took place yesterday morning when the girl, a student of Class 12, was on her way to school to appear for her exams, they said. According to police, as per the information provided by the victim's family, a man was stalking her for quite some time. "The suspect was following the girl yesterday as well. When she reached near school, he suddenly struck the girl on her neck with a sword three to four times, killing her on the spot," Superintendent of Police (SP) Sunil Jain said. A school teacher, who witnessed the incident, raised an alarm after which the man fled from the spot leaving the blood-stained sword behind, the SP said. Ludhiana MC candidate's husband attacked

The husband of Monika Ghumber, candidate of Shiv Sena (Hindustan) from Ward no 31 in the upcoming Ludhiana Municipal Corporation elections, was allegedly attacked by two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths near Jain colony here, the police said today. The incident took place yesterday evening when Virinder Ghumber, along with some other supporters of her wife's party, were coming back from the poll campaign, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Surinder Lamba said while quoting the statement given by the victim. Virinder told the police that he mistook the two youths as Shiv Sena (H) supporters. He said that the two first signalled them to stop the car, after which while discussing about the campaign one of them attacked him with an iron rod. CBI registers corruption case against Aurangabad DM

The CBI has registered a corruption case against the district magistrate of Bihar's Aurangabad, Kanwal Tanuj, and others, officials said today. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in acquisition of land in the Nabinagar area in the district for a power plant by Bhartiya Rail Bijlee Company Ltd (BRBCL), a subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, they said. The agency today carried out searches at the residence of the district magistrate in connection with the case. According to a CBI FIR, registered yesterday, about seven acres of land was illegally acquired by the accused. A different person, who has since died, was showed as the owner of the land. It was revealed that C Shiv Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, BRBCL, Nabinagar, had entered a criminal conspiracy with Tanuj, unidentified officers of the company, district administration and Gopal Prasad Singh, who has died, the CBI claimed. President Yameen loses support of top law officers

The Prosecutor General of Maldives, Aishath Bisham, has told police in a letter that the state of emergency declared by President Abdullah Yameen is unconstitutional as the procedure followed for ratifying it in Parliament was not done as per established convention.The parliament approved on Tuesday the extension of emergency sought by President Yameen, but it was passed without the constitutionally required quorum of 43 lawmakers.Further, Bisham states in his letter that all detained leaders should be released immediately or produced before a court if their remand is to be extended.The Maldives Police Service, thereafter approached Attorney General Mohamed Anil for advice on the matter, who also endorsed Bisham's advice.This led acting Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Nawaz to approach President Abdulla Yameen for directions and was instructed not to release any person.Bisham's letter to the authorities comes after several travel advisories were issued by many countries not to travel .

HC seeks Maha's reply on PIL over retired cops overstaying in quarters

The Bombay High Court today issued a notice to the Maharashtra government over a public interest litigation, which alleged that many police officials and their families continued to occupy police quarters even after their retirement. A bench of Justices Shantanu Kemkar and Rajesh Ketkar directed the state to file its reply within four weeks. The PIL was filed by traffic constable Sunil Toke, in which he alleged that around 1,850 retired personnel of the Mumbai Police currently continued to illegally occupy the police quarters in the city. This, while 2,500 serving policemen await allotment of the official housing, he said. Toke sought the court's direction to the state home department to evict the illegal occupants of the police quarters. He has also sought that such offenders be directed to pay the house rent, power dues, etc for the time that they have occupied the police quarters illegally.

Fodder scam: Jharkhand HC rejects Lalu's bail plea

The Jharkhand High Court on Friday rejected the bail plea of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad in the Deoghar Treasury matter.He was earlier sentenced to three and a half years in the matter by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court.The 69-year-old leader had earlier challenged his conviction in the case and had sought bail from the court.The RJD supremo is already lodged in Birsa Munda jail in Ranchi since December 23, 2017, in connection with the second case of fodder scam related to illegal withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from Deogarh treasury.The veteran politician had already been convicted in three fodder scam cases in 2013, 2017 and 2018 and got five, three-and-a-half and five years of imprisonment respectively.After his first conviction, on September 30, 2013, he faced disqualification from Lok Sabha and a ban on contesting elections.He still faces trial in two other scam cases.

Woman molested at Mumbai station, accused held

A 21-year-old woman was allegedly molested by a person at Mumbai railway station on Thursday.ASI D.K.Sharma, while analysing the CCTV footage, noticed that at about 11:25 a.m a man hugged a lady passenger. On suspicion, he immediately directed two officials to reach the spot.When both officials reached there, the woman alleged that a man molested her while she was waiting for local training to reach Ghansoli for her job.On the basis of woman's complaint and CCTV footage, both the constables nabbed the molester.The 43-year old Naresh Kurnashankar Joshi, a resident of Ghansoli on questioning admitted his crime.He was later handed over to Government Railway Police (GRP) in Vashi, who after investigating the matter, registered a case under section 354 (a) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Sunanda Pushkar death case: SC issues notice to Delhi Police

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to Delhi Police on a petition filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy in connection with Sunanda Pushkar death case.Swamy had moved to the Supreme Court and challenged the Delhi High Court order after it had dismissed his plea.The Delhi High Court, while dismissing Swamy's plea, had termed it as a 'Political Interest Litigation'.Speaking to media after the hearing, Swamy said, "The police took advantage of the dismissal of my petition".He said the court felt that the investigation was at the final stage."The court has issued notice to the Delhi Police to answer all the charges I have made in my petition.
