Tribal man beaten to death in Kerala

A 35-year-old tribal man was beaten to death by local people for allegedly stealing articles from some shops at Agali here, police said. The deceased, suspected to be mentally unsound, was identified as Madhu, hailing from Kadukumanna settlement of Attappady, one of the largest and backward tribal hamlets in the state. The shabbily dressed man, who was living in the forest near Mukkali here for some months, used to be seen wandering in the area, police said. He was beaten up by the local people, who accused him of stealing articles from some shops in the town, and later handed him over to the police yesterday. Some television channels aired visuals purportedly showing people taking selfies with Madhu with his hands tied up. Though, the police tried to rush him to the nearby Agali government hospital, he vomited, collapsed and died in the jeep itself and was declared by dead by the hospital, police said. Agali police has registered a case and some persons have been taken into custody, .

Man tied up, thrashed while locals click selfies in Kerala

In a shocking incident, people at a village in Kerala's Palakkad district clicked selfies with a man; they had tied and thrashed allegedly after he was caught shop-lifting.The 27-year-old man died while being taken to hospital by the police.The man, who was believed to be mentally-ill, lived in the forests near the village.According to the police he used to steal from local shops to survive.The incident took place on February 22, when a few locals allegedly tracked him down, tied him up and tortured him for hours. Some even took selfies during the mob attack.According to reports, the police was called in and when the man was being taken away by the police, he vomited and collapsed. He was then taken to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.Case has been registered against unknown people.

18-yr-old woman set on fire in UP

An 18-year-old woman was set ablaze allegedly by some unidentified persons in Satni Bala Kheda village here, police said today. The woman had gone to market on a bicycle from her home yesterday when some unidentified persons allegedly threw some inflammable liquid and set her ablaze, they said. Senior police officials, including the superintendent of police Pushpanjali and Inspector general (zone) Sujit Pandey, also visited the scene of the incident, the police said. On a complaint filed by the woman's family, an FIR against unknown persons was lodged and investigations were underway, police station incharge Uttar Singh Rathore said. More details will be known after the post mortem examination, he said.

Villarreal footballer charged with attempted murder, kidnapping

Villarreal's Portuguese defender Ruben Semedo was Thursday charged with attempted murder and kidnapping, a Spanish justice spokesman said. The 23-year-old was arrested at his home in the early hours of Tuesday after a man alleged he had been "tied up, beaten and held by Semedo and two other men at the player's villa in Betera", near Valencia, Las Provincias newspaper said. Villarreal later issued a statement saying they had opened disciplinary proceedings against the player to investigate what had happened. Semedo, who was remanded in custody when he appeared in court on Thursday, is also accused of assault and battery, threats, illegal possession of weapons and theft with violence, said a justice spokesman. US Tennis Association 'mostly liable' in Bouchard fall

The US Tennis Association was found "mostly liable" by a New York jury today for Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard's locker room fall at the 2015 US Open, US media reported. Life term for three in murder case

Three brothers have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in connection with a murder case of 2014. Additional District Sessions judge Ram Sudh Singh yesterday held Anees, Pappu and Muzammil guilty of killing Nazakat under section 302 of the IPC. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the each of accused. According to the prosecution, Nazakat was shot dead by the three men over a minor dispute in the Kidwai Nagar locality here on January 13, 2014.

Missouri governor charged with invasion of privacy linked to affair

The governor of the US state of Missouri has been charged with criminal invasion of privacy for taking compromising photos of his former mistress without her knowledge, in an alleged blackmail case. Governor Eric Greitens was taken into custody and booked yesterday, according to the St Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper, after a grand jury issued the felony charge related to allegations that he blackmailed a woman with whom he was having an affair. Greitens has admitted to the affair in 2015, before he took office as the chief executive of the Midwestern state. According to the newspaper, Greitens took a photograph of the woman in a compromising pose -- bound and partially nude -- and threatened to publicise the image if the affair was exposed, charges he denies. The indictment document says that Greitens "knowingly photographed" an unidentified woman in "a state of full or partial nudity without (her) knowledge or consent." Man kills class 11 student outside school in MP

A 16-year-old girl was hacked to death with a sword outside her school at Kotma village in Madhya Pradesh's Anuppur district.The incident came to light on Thursday, when the girl, who was studying in class 11 of an all girl's government school was attacked with a sword on her neck, where she died on the spot, said the police officials.The victim's family alleged a man named Dilip Sahu to be her killer."In 2014 the girl had filed a complaint of eve-teasing against the Dilip and a criminal investigation was done on the matter," said SDOP Vijay Singh.Dilip has been arrested in the matter and is being interrogated by the police."I saw a girl outside and a man walking behind her outside the school and thought they were family. Woman burnt alive in UP, dies

2 stabbed to death in Delhi

Two people have been stabbed to death in Delhi's Narela.One other person has also got critically injured.The incident took place at around 8.15 pm on Thursday. Two, including a juvenile, caught for stealing mobile phones in Metro

Two people, including a juvenile, were caught for disguising as women and allegedly stealing mobile phones and other valuables from Metro commuters, police said today. A complaint was received by the Delhi Metro police from a woman that her mobile phone was stolen by two women while commuting between Vishwavidyalaya to Rajiv Chowk stations, they added. The accused, Satyam (22) and the juvenile, were caught after they were identified in footage recorded by CCTV cameras, DCP (Metro) Pankaj Singh said. It was found that the suspects were previously involved in more such cases, he said.

Bihar: 2 arrested, 5 detained for leaking question paper

Senior ITDC official arrested in bribery case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested a senior manager of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 60,000.It was alleged that the senior manager had demanded the bribe to clear pending bills of Rs 20 lakh of a contractor."CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs. 60,000 from the complainant. Soon after that searches were conducted at the premises of the accused," an agency spokesperson said.The accused was produced before the designated court in Delhi earlier today.Further investigation is underway.

HC dismisses plea by accused in Shekhar Reddy case

The Madras High Court has dismissed a petition filed by an accused in a money laundering case involving sand mining baron Shekhar Reddy, seeking the return of his passport to travel aboard. The accused, Premkumar, had filed an appeal against the order of a CBI court here, refusing to return his passport. In his order yesterday, Justice G Jayachandran said a person accused of a grave crime could not seek return of passport as a matter of right claiming that holding it was an infringement on his fundamental right. A person like the petitioner, who had wide contacts, if allowed to possess the passport, there was every possibility of his flying away from the criminal judicial system, the judge said. Premkumar had sought the return of his passport, which was surrendered before the CBI court at the time of his securing bail on May 12, 2017. HC dismisses petition against Cardinal Alencherry

The Kerala High Court today dismissed a petition seeking a police investigation against the head of Syro-Malabar Church Cardinal George Ale0ncherry and three others over alleged irregularities in land deals involving the church, causing huge loss. Dismissing the petition by one Joshy Varghese, a resident of Perumbavoor here, Justice B Kemal Pasha said a private complaint given by the petitioner was pending before a magistrate's court and that an enquiry was going on. The petitioner himself had given evidence before the magistrate's court. Hence, at this stage, the high court could not direct a police probe in the matter, Justice Pasha said. Teenage boy detained for pouring colour on fellow classmate

A teenage boy was detained and sent to a child observation home in Faridabad after a female classmate accused him of putting red lead on her head deliberately, police said. Following a complaint by the victim's family, Gurgaon police registered a case and booked the minor accused under non-bailable sections of the POCSO Act. The accused was produced before a juvenile justice board, which sent him to a child observation home in Faridabad for a period of 14 days, they added. HC dismisses PIL seeking probe into Anil Madhav Dave's death

The Madhya Pradesh High Court today dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition, which sought a probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Union environment minister Anil Madhav Dave. The court said it could not entertain a petition merely on the basis of newspaper reports. Dave had died on May 18, 2017, following a heart attack. Tapan Bhattacharya, an activist, had filed the PIL. A division bench of justices P K Jaiswal and Virender Singh dismissed the petition.
