HC dismisses petition in Gorakhpur riot case of 2007

The Allahabad high courttodaydismissed a petition in the Gorakhpur riot case of 2007 in which the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and the then Member of Parliament from Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath, was one of the accused. The bench comprising justices Krishna Murari and Akhilesh Chandra Sharma delivered the judgement in the petition filed by Parvez Parwaz and Asad Hayat. The court said it did not find any procedural irregularity in the order of refusal to grant sanction to prosecute the accused in the case. Parwaz, was the complainant in the FIR while Hayat was a witness in the riot case. During pendency of the writ petition, prosecution sanction was refused by the principal secretary (home) on May 3, 2017, which too was challenged by the petitioners by making amendments in the petition. In the writ petition, the petitioners had requested the court to direct investigation by an independent agency into an FIR registered in 2008 in Gorakhpur against the then MP Yogi Adityanath and three .

Petition against Salman, Katrina over casteist remarks

A petition was filed in a Delhi court on Thursday seeking to lodge an FIR against actors Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, and others for allegedly making a casteist remark during the promotion of the movie 'Tiger Zinda Hai'.The court listed the matter for consideration for February 27 and also sought a reply from the Delhi police on the complaint.The plea, filed in the Patiala House Court, alleged that the accused persons had "committed atrocity" on the members of the caste and insulted and humiliated them by making the casteist remark.The complaint, filed by Harnam Singh, a former Chairman of Delhi Commission for Karamcharis, alleged that the remark was made by Khan during a programme on a television channel while Kaif, "rather than protesting at the offensive and insensitive statement, joined the accused number 1 (Khan) in insulting and abusing the victim through her conduct.

Minor girl allegedly raped by two teen-agers

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two teenagers in Vikarabad district of Telangana, police said today. The incident happened at Ibrahimpur village in Parigi mandal of the district on February 19 when the girl stepped out of her house to wash clothes, police said. Two youths allegedly dragged her into nearby bushes and raped her, as per the complaint lodged by the girl's mother. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC as well as under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The accused were absconding, police said, adding that a search was on for them.

CBI arrests ITDC official in bribery case

The CBI has arrested a senior manager of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 60,000. It is alleged that he had demanded the bribe to clear pending bills of Rs 20 lakh of a contractor. "CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 60,000 from the complainant. Searches were conducted at the premises of the accused," an agency spokesperson said.

Senior advocate Grover moves SC, wants to be relieved from 2G cases

Senior advocate Anand Grover, who was appointed as special public prosecutor in 2G spectrum allocation cases in 2014, today moved the Supreme Court requesting that he be relieved from all the 2G cases in all courts. Grover cited two recent notifications issued by the Centre appointing Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta as special public prosecutor in appeals of 2G cases. "That the applicant be relieved of the charge of being the Special Public Prosecutor in all the 2G cases in all courts," his application said. He referred to the special 2G court verdict dated December 21, 2017, by which all the accused in the 2G cases were acquitted and refuted the claim that he had delayed the finalisation of appeals in the 2G cases challenging the special court's verdict. Number of law officers in SC to go up next week

The number of law officers representing the government in the Supreme Court is set to go up to 10 next week, but so far there is no word on who would become the next solicitor general. The law ministry file recommending the names of Aman Lekhi, Madhvi Diwan, Sandeep Sethi and Bikramjeet Banerjee as additional solicitors general has reached the Prime Minister's Office for final approval. Sources in the government said a final nod of the Appointments Committee of Cabinet on the four names is likely next week. After Ranjit Kumar resigned as the solicitor general in October last year, the key post has been lying vacant and so far there is no word from the law ministry on who would be appointed to that post. Protesters in J&K demand Kathua rape-murder perpetrators be hanged

Several protests were held here today demanding punishment to those involved in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old nomad girl in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, even as police foiled a separatists' march toward Lal Chowk area over the issue. Protests were held by separatists, civil society members and students near the Lal Chowk city centre here in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Separatists, under the banner of the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), led by JKLF chief Yasin Malik, held a protest march near the party head office in Abi Guzar area of the city. PNB scam: Barmer branch manager booked

Continuing the crackdown on all suspects in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) - Nirav Modi fraud case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday filed a case against the branch manager of the bank's Barmer branch in Rajasthan.The accused, Inder Chand Chundawat, allegedly transferred a number of government schemes worth Rs 1.57 crore and Mudra loans worth Rs 62 lakh to private accounts.The investigative agency filed two FIRs in this connection.A total of five PNB officials have been arrested in the case, so far, including a General Manager (GM) rank officer of the PNB, Rajesh Jindal.For those unversed, the PNB detected a 1.77 billion dollar (Rs 11,400) scam, in which jeweller Nirav Modi acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking from one of its branches for overseas credit from other Indian lenders.The scam started in 2011 and was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials reported it to the concerned agencies.Security agencies have been ...

AAP MLAs, workers detained

The MLAs and workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), attempting to 'gherao' the residence of Home Minister Rajnath Singh, were detained for some time on Thursday.They had given a call to gherao and protest outside the Home Minister's residence in Delhi's Akbar Road, but they were detained under the Delhi Police (DP) Act, as the area is under prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) Act, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Madhur Verma, informed.This came after the arrest of two AAP MLAs in connection with the alleged assault on Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash.At 12:00 p.m., 89 persons, including 14 females and 75 males, were detained, and later released.A minister of the Government of National Capital Territory (GNCT) named the six detained MLAs as follows- RP Gautam, Girish Saini, Fateh Singh, Anil Vajpayee, Rakhi Bidlan and Ajay Dutt.Six counselors of the AAP were also among the detained persons.

12 held in PNB scam questioned

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday questioned 12 accused who were arrested in connection with the Punjab National Bank scam.According to the CBI, a number of PNB officials, including senior officers, were also questioned.The country has been mired in Rs 11,400 crore scam by celebrated jewellery designer Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, Gitanjali Gems owner.The CBI on January 31 registered a case and issued a look-out notice against the designer, his partner Choksi, wife Ami and brother Nishal.

Gujarat govt forms SIT to probe Dalit activist's death

The Gujarat government today formed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of Dalit activist Bhanubhai Vankar, who allegedly set himself on fire outside the Patan Collector's office on February 15. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had decided to set up an SIT which would be headed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Narsimha Komar, said Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja. Other members of the SIT would be retired additional secretary Kirit Adhvaryu and IPS officer Makrand Chauhan, Jadeja said. The SIT will submit its report after a thorough probe by March 31, he said. Vankar (62), was associated with the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch. Demanding allocation of land to a Dalit family from Dudkha village in Patan district, he allegedly set himself on fire outside the Patan Collector's office on February 15. Vankar had alleged earlier that authorities were not heeding the family's just demand for several years. He died at a private hospital .

Egyptian court sentences 21 to death on terrorism charges

An Egyptian court sentenced today 21 people to death and seven others to up to life in prison over belonging to a group believed to be affiliated with the extremist Islamic State group, the state-run MENA news agency reported. Beside the 21 death sentences, the court handed down life sentences, which in Egypt are equal to 25 years, to four defendants, and 15-year-sentences to three others, MENA said. The 28 on trial were charged with belonging to an outlawed group linked to IS, disrupting public order, possession of weapons and endangering society among other charges. Of the total, only 12 are in custody while the others,16 suspects, are at large. Rights groups have repeatedly criticised similar mass sentencings in Egypt and called on authorities to ensure fair trials. HC vacates gag order granted to IIPM against Caravan article

The Delhi High Court has lifted the restrain order against an article published in a magazine in 2011 on Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) director Arindam Chaudhuri. After publication of the article, IIPM had filed a defamation case against the magazine, Caravan, and some of its staff for an article on Chaudhuri. A civil court in Silchar, Assam had granted Chaudhuri a preliminary injunction and directed the magazine to remove the article from its website. A transfer petition was filed by Caravan in the Supreme Court praying that the case be shifted from Assam to the Delhi High Court, following which the matter was transferred and heard by Justice Manmohan. While the IIPM had alleged that derogatory comments were made against its head with an intent to create a negative image in the general public, the magazine had refuted their claims. Man allegedly killed by Naxals on suspicion of being informer

A 55-year-old man was allegedly killed by Naxals at Lanji village in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra on the suspicion that he was a police informer, police said today. The body of Katiya Peka Kumoti was found on the outskirts of Lanji today morning, Gadchiroli police said. Around 10 to 15 armed Naxals came to Kumoti's farm at 10 on Wednesday night when he was guarding the crops alongwith his wife, son and daughter-in-law, and took him to a nearby forest where he was allegedly stoned to death, police said. A letter left by the assailants in his shirt pocket said that Kumoti was killed on the suspicion of being a police informer, police said.

SC stays Madras HC order on bar council polls in TN and Puducherry

The Supreme Court has stayed the Madras High Court order by which it had issued a slew of directions to ensure "free and fair election" to the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry scheduled on March 28. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud also stayed further proceedings in the matter before the high court but said the candidates must disclose their criminal antecedents. "There shall be stay of the operation of the impugned order (of the high court). There shall also be stay of further proceedings pending before the High Court. However, any candidate who is contesting, shall disclose the criminal antecedents in the form that is going to be filled up," the bench said. Court awards life term to man for killing 8-yr-old boy

A local court here today awarded life imprisonment to a man for killing an eight-year-old boy over old enmity in Bihar's Nawada district three years ago. Additional District and Sessions (ADJ) judge Om Prakash Srivastava found Dhananjay Yadav guilty of murdering the minor boy. According to an FIR lodged at Govindpur Police Station, the incident occurred on January 27, 2015 at Harnarainpur village. Yadav tied the eight-year-old boy, Sujit Kumar, to a tree and beat him up mercilessly till he died, the FIR said. The deceased's mother Chinta Devi had lodged a complaint against Yadav.

1984 riots: HC upholds anticipatory bail order of Sajjan Kumar

The Delhi High Court today upheld a trial court order granting anticipatory bail to Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in two anti-Sikh riots cases of 1984. Justice Anu Malhotra disallowed the plea by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the riots cases, seeking to cancel the anticipatory bail of Kumar, saying that according to records, he was available throughout the investigation. The available records indicate that pursuant of the orders (of the trial court), Sajjan Kumar has made himself available for investigation and it has been submitted on his behalf that he shall continue to do so, the court said in its 132-page order. Consider compensating starvation deaths victims: Petitioners to SC

Former Karnataka High Court judge today told the Supreme Court that several deaths have reportedly taken place due to starvation on account of glitches in the Aadhaar-based public distribution system and the court must consider granting them compensation. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra was told by Justice K S Puttaswamy, who is the lead petitioner in a batch of cases challenging the Aadhaar and its enabling Act, that in violation of the top court's direction of limited use for welfare schemes, Aadhaar has been mandatorily linked to various schemes by the government. The bench, also comprising Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan, was told by senior advocate Gopal Subramanium, appearing for the retired judge, that starvation deaths have taken place in Jharkhand and some other states due to glitches in the Aadhaar-based public distribution system as ration was not given to the families.
