The external affairs ministry today said it has a sort of acknowledgement from Nirav Modi, one of the accused in the over Rs 11,000 crore PNB scam, of the show cause notice on why his passport should not be revoked and that the notice has now been sent to a "requested" email id. The comments by external affairs ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar come a day ahead of expiry of the one-week time given to Modi and his uncle and promoter of the Gitanjali Gems group Mehul Choksi to respond why their passports should not be revoked. On the location of Modi, Kumar said, "The matter should be addressed to the law enforcement agencies. There are certain investigations and legal procedures which need to be completed before the ministry comes into the picture." Selection process for appointments in tribunals to go on: SC

Plea in court for FIR against Salman Khan for alleged casteist remark

A plea was today filed before a city court seeking lodging of an FIR against Bollywood actors Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and others for allegedly using a casteist slur against the scheduled castes. According to the complaint, Khan had used the word during the promotion of his film 'Tiger Zinda Hai'. The plea, filed before Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma, alleged that the accused persons had "committed atrocity" on the members of the caste and insulted and humiliated them by making the casteist remark. The court put up the matter for consideration on February 27 and sought a reply from the Station House Officer concerned on the complaint. Bawana fire: Factory c0-owner was present at site on day of fire, says Police

The Delhi Police today told a city court that the owner of the firecracker storage unit in Bawana industrial area, where a blast killed 17 people last month, was present there on the day of the incident and had locked the workers inside when they were working. The submission was made by the police in its status report filed before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gagandeep Singh in pursuance to the court's order for further investigation. The police said it had recorded the statement of injured worker Roop Prakash who had said that Lalit Goyal, partner of main accused and factory owner Manoj Jain, and Jain's son Aditya were present in the premises on January 20 when the blast took place. They had locked the main gate from outside, it said. The police also told the court that one of the supervisors of another firecracker factory, owned by the same persons, was needed to be interrogated in connection with this matter, but he has not joined the investigation despite repeated attempts. AAP MLAs given hearing, no violation of natural justice: EC to HC

The Election Commission of India (ECI) today told the Delhi High Court that the 20 disqualified AAP MLAs in an office-of-profit case were afforded ample hearing by it and there was no violation of the principle of natural justice as they had "willfully and deliberately" abstained from participating in the proceedings. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Chander Shekhar was informed by the Commission that the MLAs were now taking a "vague defence" that they wished to adduce evidence in their support but had failed to do so when they were afforded the opportunity. The poll panel submitted that the legislators had "willfully and deliberately" abstained from participating in the proceedings before the poll panel. Nashik man arrested for bigamy, cheating, illegal confinement

Palghar rural police today arrested a 30-year-old man in Nashik on the charge of marrying a woman by concealing his first marriage, and keeping her in 'captivity'. Sampat Shid, the accused, has been booked under IPC sections 376 (rape), 346 (wrongful confinement), 495 (bigamy by concealment of first marriage) and 420 (cheating), a local police official said. According to the complainant, a 21-year-old woman from Mokhada in Palghar district, the accused married her at the registrar's office in Nashik by hiding the fact that he was already married and had two children. Afterwards, between September 17, 2016 and December 29, 2017, he kept her in 'captivity' at his sister's house, she alleged.

Convict attempts suicide inside Circle jail in Odisha

A murder convict serving life term allegedly attempted suicide inside the Circle jail here today, police said. The convict, a resident of Koraput, tried to hang himself from a window grill in the prison ward, the police said. He was admitted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, said Senior Jail Superintendent B B Patnaik. The condition of the convict, who was earlier in Koraput jail, is stated to be good, he said. The convict has already spent around 10 years in jail, he said.

"Politically motivated" CBI cooked up fake encounter story: HC told

Senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani today told the Bombay High Court that the alleged fake encounter case of gangster Sohrabuddin Shaikh was cooked up by a "politically motivated" CBI in 2005, and the agency is now "much more balanced". Appearing for Rajkumar Pandian, an IPS officer discharged from the case, Jethmalani said Shaikh and his aide Tulsiram Prajapati, who was also killed in another alleged fake encounter, were notorious gangsters, wanted by police in three states. Arguing before the court against a petition challenging Pandian's discharge, he claimed Shaikh was a terrorist with links to the fugitive mafia don Dawood Ibrahim. "Sohrabuddin was a terrorist. He had been in touch with Dawood Ibrahim, who had provided him with a large cache of arms to propagate anti-national activities in the country. German ex-priest jailed on 108 counts of child sex abuse

A German former Catholic priest was today sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for more than 100 cases of child sexual abuse and other offences. The 53-year-old will undergo years of therapy in a closed psychiatric institution before starting his prison term, a court in the southeastern city of Deggendorf ruled. Whether he will ever be released depends on whether he is still deemed a threat to society, said chief justice Thomas Trautwein. Previously named in media reports as Thomas Maria B, the former priest had previously been jailed from 2003 to 2009 for other sexual crimes. He later obtained new church qualification papers to work as a priest using forged documents. In his latest trial, he was found guilty of sexually abusing five boys in 108 cases since the 1990s. He was also convicted of the attempted rape of an 18-year-old girl, as well as assault and possession of child pornography. Hyd cops nab three persons, seize Rs 27 lakh in hawala racket

Police today busted a hawala racket and apprehended three persons along with Rs 27.9 lakh in unaccounted cash, officials said. The case has been handed over to the Income Tax department for further investigation, officials informed. Acting on a tip-off, police kept watch on a mobile phone shop in the city's Koti area and caught D Madhusudhan Prasad (65), a senior manager in a construction firm, alleged hawala operator Sohanlalalias Sonu (22) and Kishore Kumar (27), the owner of the shop. A bag containing Rs 27.9 lakh was also found with them, police said. Police officials said that Madhusudan had confessed that he was going to deliver the money to Sohanlal and Kumar. "The money was to be sent to Delhi, Madhusudan has told us. The prime accused in the case, Balwant Singh, is absconding," police said. On February 12, police here had uncovered another hawala racket and had arrested six persons. Unaccounted cash of Rs 1.48 crore was seized then, officials said.

Builder, architect sent to jail for 3 yrs for '98 Thane building collapse

The builder and the architect of a building that collapsed in 1998 killing 18 persons, were sentenced to three years in jail by a court here today. District Judge Vilas Bambarde convicted builder Sharad Bhai Mansingh Pawar and architect Anand Ashtaputre and sentenced them to three years in prison for the collapse of the "Sairaj" building in Wagle Estate here. The five-storeyed building, constructed on a nullah using sub-standard construction material, caved in on November 7, 1998, killing 18 persons. The police, at the time, had registered cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those dealing with causing death by negligence, against nine persons. While one of the accused, Ramaswamy Ramanna, died during the pendency of the trial, the other six were acquitted today. Lawyers Punit Mahimkar, Pravin Kulkarni and GB Chavan appeared for the accused.

Police officer sentenced to two years in jail in graft case

A court here today sentenced a police officer to two years' rigorous imprisonment in a case of bribery. Inspector Chatla Vijayakumar (47), then posted at Choppadandi, allegedly took Rs 40,000 from the complainant for his release on bail in April 2009 after a case of trespass was lodged against the complainant in connection with a land dispute. Vijayakumar later demanded another Rs 20,000 for not initiating further proceedings against him, and threatened to seize his JCB machine if he didn't pay up, according to the prosecution. After the complainant approached the Anti Corruption Bureau, the inspector was trapped while accepting the money in the Choppadandi police station. Judge P Bhasker Rao today also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on him.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition filed by Congress leader Bhanwar Jitendra Singh seeking quashing of an FIR against him in connection with a Royal property dispute.A case was registered against the former Congress minister for allegedly forging a trust deed to usurp the property of late Maharaja of Bundi Ranjeet Singh.According to complainant Avinash Chandana, Singh used counterfeit papers for acquiring erstwhile Bundi state property.The complainant claimed the last member of Bundi's royal family Ranjeet Singh named him the successor before his death.He also said Singh, along with two others, used fake papers to claim the possession of the property.

'Padmaavat' row: Plea alleging glorification of 'Sati' dismissed

The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed a plea alleging that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmaavat' glorified the practice of 'Sati' and seeking penal action against its producers and director.Through his plea, social activist Swami Agnivesh sought deletion of the scenes that depicted the practice of 'Sati'.He also sought direction to the Delhi police to file an FIR against the movie's promoters, producers, distributors and the director.Earlier, the Supreme Court had dismissed pleas seeking the same.Sati is a funeral custom where a widow immolates herself on her husband's pyre or takes her own life in another manner shortly after her husband's death.Bhansali's magnum opus, which stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, has been mired in controversy since the shooting started. HC upholds order granting anticipatory bail to Sajjan Kumar

The Delhi High Court today upheld a trial court order granting anticipatory bail to Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in two anti-Sikh riot cases of 1984. Justice Anu Malhotra dismissed the plea by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, seeking to cancel the anticipatory bail of Kumar, saying that as per the records, Kumar was available throughout the investigation. The available records indicate that pursuant of the orders (of the trial court), Sajjan Kumar has made himself available for investigation and it has been submitted on his behalf that he shall continue to do, the court said. It also said that the SIT was not able to make out any ground for cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to Kumar. On consideration of the totality of circumstances put forth, it is held that presently there are no grounds made out by the petitioner (SIT) for cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to Kumar on December 21, 2016, the bench added. SC refers land acquisition matter to CJI for deciding appropriate bench

The Supreme Court today referred a matter relating to land acquisition to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) for constituting an "appropriate bench" to deal with the "piquant" situation that had arisen after yesterday's order by a three-judge bench which virtually stayed the operation of a February 8 verdict. A bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Amitava Roy observed that it would be appropriate if the matter was referred to the CJI for constituting an appropriate bench to deal with it and "to see whether we can proceed with the hearing or not" in the wake of yesterday's order.
