Eleven drug peddlers arrested in J-K

Police today arrested 11 alleged drug peddlers in Baramulla and Bandipora districts of Jammu and Kashmir as part of its campaign against drug abuse, an official spokesman said. "Continuing its drive 'War Against Drugs', police here arrested 11 notorious drug peddlers in north Kashmir's Baramulla and Bandipora districts," he said. "As many as 469 bottles of codeine phosphate and about 7,000 capsules of spasmoproxyvan were seized from their possession," the spokesman said. The Baramulla Police arrested two people and seized their truck at Kralhar, he said. "The driver of the truck, Manoj Kumar Bhat, a resident of Subash Nagar in Jammu and his accomplice Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Akhoon of Khaitangan were arrested. The police also seized 460 bottles of codeine phosphate from the truck," he said. The spokesman said both the accused have a previous criminal record. ED seizes Rs 100 cr deposits, luxury cars of Nirav Modi, Choksi

The ED today said it has frozen shares, deposits and luxury cars worth over Rs 100 crore of the Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi groups in connection with amoney laundering probe against them in the Rs 11,400-crore alleged PNB fraud. Enforcement Directorate officials said they have frozen mutual funds and shares worth Rs 86.72 crore belonging to Choksi and his group and Rs 7.80 crore owned by the Modi group. While the total value of these shares and mutual funds is Rs 94.52 crore, the costly four-wheelers are worth a few crores and hence the total seizure value stands to be over Rs 100 crore, the officials said. The total seizure in the case is now Rs. 5,826 crore, which the agency has said is being independently valued. Choksi is Modi's uncle and promoter of the Gitanjali Gems group and other jewellerybrands. Kim Jong Nam murder suspect 'visited Cambodia for TV pranks'

An Indonesian woman charged with murdering the North Korean leader's half-brother visited Cambodia to take part in what she believed were pranks for a TV show with suspected Pyongyang agents, a court heard today. Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese woman Doan Thi Huong are on trial for the Cold War-style assassination of Kim Jong Nam at Kuala Lumpur airport on February 13 last year while he was waiting for a flight to Macau. Defence lawyers have argued that the women were recruited to take part in what they thought were prank TV shows but were instead tricked into becoming inadvertent assassins, in an elaborate plot by a group of North Korean agents. The women, in their 20s, have denied carrying out the murder of Kim Jong Un's estranged half-brother by smearing a nerve agent in his face. They face death by hanging if found guilty. NCDRC asks Unitech to refund over Rs 4.37 crore to home buyer

The apex consumer commission has asked the Unitech Ltd to refund over Rs 4.3 crore to a home buyer after the real estate firm failed to hand over the possession of a property even after four years of the promised delivery date. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) directed the realtor to refund Rs 4,37,98,966 to Gurgaon-resident Major (Retd) Jaideep Singh who had booked a house in one of the projects of the firm in 2012. It also asked the realty firm to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 to Singh. "The opposite party (Unitech) shall refund the entire principal amount of Rs 4,37,98,966 to the complainant (Singh) along with compensation...," the presiding member of the commission, Justice V K Jain, said. It directed the firm to pay the amount within three months. According to the complaint filed by Singh, in April 2012, he had booked a house in one of the firm's projects, Espace Premier Nirvana Country-2, which was proposed to be developed at sector 78 in Gurgaon. ..

Dogs kill four-year-old boy sleeping in cradle

A four-year-old boy was killed in Chityala region of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday when two dogs bit him while sleeping in a cradle.Ibrahim accompanied his parents for farming and was sleeping in a cradle hanging by a tree when he was brutally attacked by the dogs. The boy died on the spot, his mother Chandbi said.Chandbi was busy doing her daily chorus and only got to know about the incident when she came to feed her child. She was shocked to see blood flowing from the cradle and called her husband Sheik Hussain Pira.The couple understood the whole scene when they saw the dogs moving around the cradle with blood on their mouth.

Convicted S'pore church leader nabbed while fleeing in boat

A former Singaporean Church leader was charged in court today for attempting to flee the country, before he was to start serving a jail sentence for being part of a group that misappropriated SGD 50 million in church funds. Former City Harvest Church (CHC) leader Chew Eng Han was arrested by the Police Coast Guard yesterday from a motorised 'sampan' (small boat) off a Singaporean island, Pulau Ubin, according to media reports. Chew, on bail of SGD 1 million, was today due to start serving a jail term of three years and four months for his role in the misappropriation of SGD 50 million of church funds, the largest fraud involving charitable funds in Singapore's history. Chew, 57, was arrested at sea at 8.47 am yesterday for leaving the country from an unauthorised point of departure "without being compelled by accident or other reasonable cause," court documents stated. Man arrested for flashing at woman in Thane

A 28-year-old man was arrested for flashing at a woman here, police said today. Senior Inspector SM Patil of the Shree Nagar police station here said that the man, identified as Bhandup-resident Ajay Wahe, was arrested last night after the victim filed a complaint. She said that Wahe had called out to the victim, while she was on her way home in the Wagle Estate area of the city, and flashed at her. Police said that Wahe had been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of a woman.

Madras HC grants anticipatory bail to chief temple architect in gold theft case

The Madras High Court today granted anticipatory bail to M Muthaiah, chief temple architect of the Tamil government, in a gold idol theft case in Kancheepuram. Muthaiah, chief 'sthapathi' of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, had last month moved an anticipatory bail plea apprehending arrest by the Idol Wing CID police in the case related to 'hiving off' 5.75 kg of gold from the idol at the Lord Ekambaranathar Temple. The idol wing had last month registered an FIR against nine people, including the temple executive officer Murugesan, Muthaiah, sculptor Masilamani and priest Rajappa. While seeking anticipatory bail, Muthaiah had contented that he had no role in the heist and police had not produced any material evidence against him. Rape allegations against me politically motivated: Khandu

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu today termed the rape allegations made against him by a woman last week as "false" and "politically motivated" and said he has full faith on the National Commission for Women (NCW) to decide on the merits of the case. A woman had filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) alleging that Khandu had raped her in 2008. The complaint was filed on February 15, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited the state. "I am shocked and saddened by the false allegations against me. Politicians not God, not above the law: Bombay HC on mangrove PIL

Observing that politicians were "not God" and nor were they above the law, the Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra police to book two local corporators for encroaching on mangroves. A bench of Justices SC Dharamadhikari and Bharati Dangre directed the Mira raid police station to book BJP's Parshuram Mhatre and Shiv Sena's Anita Patil, both local corporators, within a week, for violations under the Environment Protection Act. "Political leaders are not above the law. They are not God, or someone who can claim a right to be in contravention of laws. Why is the municipal corporation and the local police afraid of initiating action against the offenders? You must be bold and must not fear anyone" the bench said. A man died after he was beaten up by the mob in suspicion of being a child molester.The incident took place on February 3, wherein later he was admitted in a hospital for treatment. The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to give an urgent hearing into matter mentioned by a lawyer, Manohar Lal Sharma, referring to making the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) an independent agency.A three-judge bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, Justices A. M. Khanwilkar and D. Y. Five booked in loan default case

Five persons, including two couples, have been booked for allegedly defaulting on loans worth over Rs 4.55 crore they had taken from Indiabulls Housing Finance Limited, the city police said today. The five accused were identified as Marpat Bhokadia, Kalpesh Bhokadia, Manjula Bhokadia, Rajesh Mevawala and Rakhi Rajesh Mevavala, Naupada police said. "As per the complaint lodged by an official of Indiabulls, the Bhokadias approached the firm in March 2011 and sought housing loan to the tune of Rs 4,55,00,000. They told the company that they were into production and export of steel," a police officer said. "As part of guarantee, they offered to mortgage two flats in Mumbai owned by the Mevavalas, who were to sell the flats at a cost of Rs 3,12,50,000 to Bhokadias. They told the finance company that once the loan is sanctioned, they would get the sale deed done and submit the documents," the officer added. Man gets 10 years in prison for smuggling poppy husk

A special court here has awarded 10-year jail term to a man convicted of smuggling poppy husk. The court of special judge Rajesh Kumar Gupta yesterday sentenced Rajasthan resident Vishnu Kumar Mali for smuggling poppy husk, public prosecutor P N Malakar said today. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Mali. In the event of Mali not paying the fine, he will have to undergo an additional year of imprisonment. Mali was nabbed on June 18, 2017 from Ghoghatpur under the Machalpur police station limits. He said around 225 kilograms of poppy husk was recovered from Mali's vehicles which was searched by the police following a tip-off. While Mali was arrested, the other occupants of the vehicle managed to flee, officials said. A case was registered against him under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
