Cash bound for poll-bound Bijepur seized, 2 held
The police have seized Rs 42.5 lakh in cash from a car and arrested two persons in this connection in Bargarh district, police said today. It was suspected that the cash was being sent to Bijepur Assembly constituency where by-election would be held on February 28, police said. The car was intercepted near Mahulapalli during a checking last night as the police had a tip off about the money being transported from Chhattisgarh. The cash, Rs 42.5 lakh in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 2000, and the car were seized in presence of a magistrate, police said. A man and his son were arrested after they failed to explain why were carrying so much money in cash, police said. Both the ruling BJD and the opposition BJP accused each other of being involved in the incident. Earlier, the police had seized Rs 3.2 lakh from two cars at Talpali Square of the district on February 14.
Animal protection laws need to be implemented strongly: Court
A Delhi court has expressed displeasure over animals being subjected to cruelty during transportation and then released to their violators as a "matter of convenience". The court said it has to be seen that laws relating to animal protection and prevention of cruelty are firmly implemented and a nation whose roots are strongly embedded in the principles of 'Ahimsa', does not permit cruelty to animals. Special Judge Kamini Lau said the courts cannot turn a blind eye on animal rights violation and dismissed the revision petition filed by Rajasthan resident Bajrang, whose animals were confiscated and who was fined Rs 1,000 for transporting 76 goats and 23 sheep on a truck in an inhuman manner. While refusing to release the herd of goats and sheep to Bajrang, who was convicted under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the court also said that none of the transport of animals rules were followed by him and he had pleaded guilty before the trial court. PNB fraud case: ED conducts multi-city raids
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Sunday conducted raids at 45 locations across 15 cities in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case involving businessman Nirav Modi.In West Bengal, six locations of Gitanjali and Nakshatra jewellery outlets were being searched in Kolkata.At the time of filing this report, the raids are on in the 15 cities.The PNB has lodged two financial fraud complaints of Rs. 11400 crore and Rs 280 crore against Nirav Modi, his family members and Mehul Choksi, owner of Gitanjali Gems.The CBI filed a formal case charging four- Nirav Modi, his wife Ami, brother Nishal and Mehul Choksi- on January 31 over Rs. 280 crore fraud.The PNB scam has rattled nation as well as the government.The ED on Saturday also conducted searches at 21 locations across India in connection with the PNB fraud case. 15-yr-old daughter of Army personnel raped
A 15-year-old daughter of an Indian Army personnel was raped in Hyderabad city of Telangana.Trimulgherry police station Inspector said the class X student's father on December 21 last year complained that his daughter was raped near Ammuguda Railway track when she went out to meet her friend.The victim and her friend left for their places after meeting for a while. Her friend returned to home, but the victim was dragged into bushes by an unknown person. She was then brutally raped and beaten with a stick.The man also stuffed a cloth into the victim's mouth so that she could not scream.According to passersby, the badly injured girl was lying unconscious on the ground.A case has been registered under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 5 and 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.The police said it had interrogated many suspects, including 12 professional criminals, who were involved in such cases earlier.The police also questioned the victim's minor friend, ..

Cong MLA's son, friends assault man at hotel; expelled for 6yrs
A Congress MLA's son, himself a Congressman, and his friends allegedly assaulted a man at a restaurant here, following which he was expelled from the party for six years. Police said Mohammed Harris Nalapad and his 10 friends beat up the man at a restaurant in UB City late last night after they felt offended over him exending his feet, cast in plaster, towards the table they were sitting at. Nalapad's whereabouts were not known. The man, identified as Vidwat, has been hospitalised, police said. Nalapad, General Secretary of Bengaluru District Youth Congress, is the son of Shantinagar MLA N A Harris. Police said an FIR has been registered against Nalapad and his friends. HC orders to pay fair compensation to temple land
Rejecting pleas to demolish the District Collector's office building in Karur as it was built the property owned by Sri Thanthoni Arulmigu Kalayana Ventaramana Swamy, the Madras high Court however directed the authorities to pay a fair compensation for the land. A division bench comprising Justices T S Sivagnanam and R Tharani, hearing a batch of petitions on the matter, also directed the officials to conduct a survey and identify the lands belonging to Vennaimalai Sri Balasubramaniaswamy temple to find out encroachments.
Journalist's mother, 1-yr-old daughter found dead in nullah
The bodies of the mother and toddler daughter of a local journalist were found in a nullah in the city today, with police suspecting murder. Usha Kamble (52) and Rashi (1), mother and daughter of local scribe Ravikant Kamble, were missing since last evening, police said. "Usha and Rashi had gone missing since last evening. Their bodies with injury marks were found in a nullah in Bahadura area around 10.30 am today," a police officer said. Senior CPI(M) leader and MLA M Y Tarigami today termed the rally organised by a fringe right-wing group, demanding the release of the accused in the rape and murder of a minor girl, as the most "shameful act" and against human values. He expressed hope that the civil society here would raise its voice to seek justice for the eight-year-old girl, allegedly raped and murdered in Kathua district last month. Body of the minor girl was recovered from Rassana forest on January 17, a week after she went missing while grazing horses in the forest area. Narayanasamy urges Centre to hold probe into PNB fraud case
Chief Minister V Narayanasamy today urged the Centre to order a detailed probe into the alleged multi crore rupee PNB fraud involving Nirav Modi. Talking to reporters here he said that the alleged fraud involving Rs 11,400 crores was shocking and the Centre should order a detailed probe. The fraud is perhaps the biggest ever in the financial history of the country and hence the government should also expose all those involved in the fraud, he said. 7-yr jail term for man for sexually abusing minor girl
A local court here sentenced a 26-year-old man to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a minor girl in late 2016. According to the prosecution, Ashok Kumar Das (26) of Renupada village under Basta police station lured a minor girl of the same village to a secluded place and sexually assaulted her. The incident took place on November 25, 2016. The victim later narrated the incident to her family and one of the girls relative lodged a complaint with the police station, following which the accused was arrested. Additional district session judge of Balasore, Ajanta Sadangi, while delivering the judgment yesterday, awarded 7 years rigorous imprisonment to the accused along with a fine Rs 5,000.

Mother, daughter forced to eat human excreta for 'practising witchcraft'
A 65-year-old woman and her 35-year-old daughter were allegedly forced to eat human excreta and their heads were tonsured by their neighbours on the suspicion of practising "witchcraft".The incident took place on February 16 in Dulami village under Sonahatu police station in Ranchi.The victims have registered their complaints against the accused for forcing them to eat faeces and tonsuring them.Meanwhile, the police have assured that the case has been registered against all the accused."A woman and six others took ill and fell unconscious last night. Man held with 5 kg cannabis in Jammu
A suspected drug peddler was arrested with five kg of cannabis here, the police said today. A police party noticed a person moving under suspicious circumstances near Wave mall here last evening and stopped him for checking, a police spokesperson said. During frisking, five kg ganja was seized from the accused, he said. He was arrested and a case registered against him at Bahu Fort police station, the spokesperson said.

SC asks Delhi HC to allow judicial officers to take up exam meant for ADJs
The Supreme Court has come to the rescue of lower judicial officers, who were barred from appearing in an examination for appointment of additional district judges (ADJs), and asked the Delhi High Court to register their applications. Some lower judicial officers including judicial, executive and metropolitan magistrates have assailed Rule 9 (2) of the Delhi Higher Judicial Service Rules which bars them from appearing in the examination to be held on April 15 for appointment of entry level ADJs. "We direct the High Court of Delhi to register the applications of the petitioners and intervenors, if they are otherwise in order, ignoring the objections regarding seven years practice and in case they are otherwise eligible as per the three aspects referred to above," a bench of justices Kurian Joseph and M M Shantanagoudar said.
