The police have seized Rs 42.5 lakh in cash from a car and arrested two persons in this connection in Bargarh district, police said today. It was suspected that the cash was being sent to Bijepur Assembly constituency where by-election would be held on February 28, police said. The car was intercepted near Mahulapalli during a checking last night as the police had a tip off about the money being transported from Chhattisgarh. The cash, Rs 42.5 lakh in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 2000, and the car were seized in presence of a magistrate, police said. A man and his son were arrested after they failed to explain why were carrying so much money in cash, police said. Both the ruling BJD and the opposition BJP accused each other of being involved in the incident. Earlier, the police had seized Rs 3.2 lakh from two cars at Talpali Square of the district on February 14.
A Delhi court has expressed displeasure over animals being subjected to cruelty during transportation and then released to their violators as a "matter of convenience". The court said it has to be seen that laws relating to animal protection and prevention of cruelty are firmly implemented and a nation whose roots are strongly embedded in the principles of 'Ahimsa', does not permit cruelty to animals. Special Judge Kamini Lau said the courts cannot turn a blind eye on animal rights violation and dismissed the revision petition filed by Rajasthan resident Bajrang, whose animals were confiscated and who was fined Rs 1,000 for transporting 76 goats and 23 sheep on a truck in an inhuman manner. Her friend returned to home, but the victim was dragged into bushes by an unknown person. The bodies of the mother and toddler daughter of a local journalist were found in a nullah in the city today, with police suspecting murder. Usha Kamble (52) and Rashi (1), mother and daughter of local scribe Ravikant Kamble, were missing since last evening, police said. "Usha and Rashi had gone missing since last evening. A local court here sentenced a 26-year-old man to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a minor girl in late 2016. According to the prosecution, Ashok Kumar Das (26) of Renupada village under Basta police station lured a minor girl of the same village to a secluded place and sexually assaulted her. The incident took place on November 25, 2016. The victim later narrated the incident to her family and one of the girls relative lodged a complaint with the police station, following which the accused was arrested. The Supreme Court has come to the rescue of lower judicial officers, who were barred from appearing in an examination for appointment of additional district judges (ADJs), and asked the Delhi High Court to register their applications. Some lower judicial officers including judicial, executive and metropolitan magistrates have assailed Rule 9 (2) of the Delhi Higher Judicial Service Rules which bars them from appearing in the examination to be held on April 15 for appointment of entry level ADJs. "We direct the High Court of Delhi to register the applications of the petitioners and intervenors, if they are otherwise in order, ignoring the objections regarding seven years practice and in case they are otherwise eligible as per the three aspects referred to above," a bench of justices Kurian Joseph and M M Shantanagoudar said.
