Three held for raping two minor sisters in Thane

The police has arrested three men from the powerloom town of Bhiwandi in the district for allegedly raping two minor sisters, an official said today. The girls, aged 14 and 17 and residing in the Jaitunpura locality, had some months back befriended five men living in the same area, inspector D M Katke said. The men later took the girls to different places in the area where they allegedly raped them in the last two months, he said. On February 9, the Bhiwandi town police, based on the complaint of the girls, registered offences against the five people and arrested three of them, the official said. The accused, in their 20s, were booked under relevant IPC sections for rape and kidnapping and also provisions of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, he said. The arrested men were remanded in police custody till February 16, the police said, adding that a search was on for the other two accused.

Pak SC reserves judgement in lifetime disqualification case

Pakistan's Supreme Court today reserved judgment in a case related to determination of time duration for disqualification of a lawmaker under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution. The court grappled with Article 62(1)(f) which only states that a lawmaker is disqualified under specified conditions but has not set out the duration of disqualification. The issue came to limelight after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as prime minister last year under the article but it led to the controversy due to ambiguity whether his disqualification was for life or not. The five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard multiple lawyers during the hearings which continued for weeks. The bench also included Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah. Senior Cop arrested over Sri Lankan newspaper editor's killing

Sri Lankan police today arrested a senior Deputy Inspector General who became the second senior police officer to be held for the killing of a leading newspaper's editor and a vocal critic of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, officials said. Lasantha Wickrematunga, the founder and editor of the Sunday Leader, was waylaid by some unidentified bike-borne assailants who gunned him down in the Colombo suburb of Ratmalana in January 2009. The retired DIG Prasanna Nanayakkara was arrested for alleged tampering of evidence. He became the second senior policeman to be arrested in the case. On February 3, the former acting crimes Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Mount Lavinia Police was also arrested and remanded. Nanayakkara was serving the Western Province (South) Police division when Wickrematunga was murdered in broad day light in 2009. Clerk arrested by vigilance on graft charge

A senior clerk has been arrested by Odisha's anti-corruption vigilance wing for allegedly accepting bribe from a man to process a file for the registration of an NGO in Kendrapara district, a vigilance release said. Acting on a complaint, vigilance personnel laid a trap and caught Suvendu Kumar Tripathy, a senior clerk in the office of the Additional District Magistrate (ADM), Kendrapara while acccepting an illegal gratification of Rs 1,500 from the complainant yesterday, the release said. Tripathy had demanded Rs 2,000 from the complainant for finalising the registration of his NGO as per Societies Registration Act, 1860. The amount was finally reduced to Rs 1,500, the complainant said. The clerk was caught red-handed by the vigilance officers in his office room at the Collectorate in Kendrapara, while accepting the bribe from the complainant, the release said. The bribe money was recovered from Tripathy's possession following which he was arrested, the release said.

Kannur DCC Chief observes fastagainst murder of youth wing

Kannur District Congress Committee President, Sateeshan Pacheni today began his 24-hour fast to protest against the murder of a Youth Congress functionary here allegedly by CPI(M) activists. NOLA Police: 2 killed, 3 injured in Lower 9th Ward shooting

The New Orleans Police Department was investigating the shooting deaths of two men Tuesday night just a couple of miles from Mardi Gras activities earlier in the day. Police spokeswoman Ambria Washington said last night that five people were shot before driving to a gas station in the 5100 block of St Claude Avenue in the Lower 9th Ward. The victims were on a nearby street when multiple suspects opened fire on them, Washington said. News media report that the shooting started at a house party a few blocks away from the gas station. The body of the victim who died on the scene could be seen in the back of a red Nissan sedan at the La Express gas station about 3.22 kilometers from where revelers gathered for Fat Tuesday celebrations. Mason held with fake notes with face value of Rs 2.31 lakh

A mason has been arrested for allegedly possessing counterfeit notes with a face value of over Rs 2.31 lakh, police said today. The mason, Prakash Prasa Mahato (42), was arrested by a team of Crime Branch sleuths from near a college here last evening, Inspector R V Kothmire said. Fake notes with a face value of Rs 2,31,200 were seized from him, he said. The notes were in Rs 2,000, Rs 500 and Rs 100 denominations, the official said. Police are now finding out the source of the currency and also to whom it was to be delivered, he said. Mahato originally hails from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand and was currently residing in the Wagle Estate locality here, police added.

Verdict due in first Paris attacks trial

A man who rented his flat to Islamic State jihadists will be sentenced today in the first trial stemming from 2015 Paris attacks that left 130 people dead. Prosecutors are seeking a four-year jail term for Jawad Bendaoud, though more serious terrorism charges have been dropped after they said there was insufficient evidence that he knew the men were attackers. The court has been packed for the first trial connected to France's worst attacks since World War II, which started days before a separate case in Belgium involving Salah Abdeslam, believed to be the only surviving gunman from the Paris atrocity. French media nicknamed Bendaoud the "Daesh landlord", using another name for IS, after it emerged the attackers' ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud had holed up for days afterwards in the apartment in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. Delhi court rejects RK Pachauri's plea for gag order on media

A Delhi Court on Wednesday refused to restrain media from reporting on allegation of sexual harassment against former The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) Chief R. K. Pachauri.However, the Patiala House Court said all reportage on the matter should carry Pachauri's views or that of his representatives and indicate that the matter is pending before the court.After registration of an FIR against him by a colleague in February 2015, and with more women raising allegations in the months that followed, a civil suit was filed by Pachauri against media houses the next year.Pachauri then filed a plea for injunction and defamation seeking damages amounting to Rs. 1 crore against few media houses.On March 1, 2016, the Delhi Police had filed a 1,400-page chargesheet against Pachauri for allegedly sexually harassing a former woman colleague. Four people, including a relative of a BJP MLA, have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from truckers in the Naraini police station area here. "Four people were arrested near the Kartal road barrier for extorting money from sand truckers yesterday," Superintendent of Police Shalini said today. One of them, Srivishal, is believed to be a cousin of Naraini MLA Rajkaran Kabir, the SP said. When contacted, the MLA alleged that the SP had been targeting people close to him and had recently got a fake case filed against his representative Nand Kishore Brahmchari. "Now, she has arrested my cousin," he said. "I will meet Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the him the truth," Kabir said. Soldier dies after being shot by his own rifle

An Army jawan died after being shot by his own rifle at a wedding reception in Kanpur's Chakeri town.The jawan had come to attend the reception of a friend when the incident took place yesterday."We received a call; they told us he was shot at the wedding ceremony. Later we again received a call saying he died. They are saying he was shot by his own rifle after someone accidentally hit it with legs but how was he hit in the chest?" the deceased's sister raised doubt about her brother's death.Meanwhile, Kanpur's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Akhilesh Kumar Meena said "The Army jawan died after being shot by his own rifle. Main accused in Dalit student's lynching arrested

The main accused in the killing of a Dalit student of Allahabad University has been arrested, police said today. Vijay Shankar Singh was arrested from Sultanpur in the early hours today, Senior Superintendent of Police Akaash Kulhari said. Dileep (26), a second year LLB student, was thrashed by a group on Friday following an altercation outside a restaurant. He succumbed to injuries two days later. Four people have already been arrested in connection with the incident. The Yogi Adityanath government came in for criticism from rival parties over the killing, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav saying it showed Uttar Pradesh was in the "grip of criminal elements". Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati said the killing was the result of "narrow and casteist politics of hatred" being pursued by the ruling BJP.

2 killed in US gunfight

Two people were killed and three others were injured in a gunfight that took place in the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans on Tuesday, according to media reports.According to the New Orleans Police, the incident took place at around 8 p.m. (local time) in the area of the 5100 block of St. Claude Avenue, where it appeared one of the slain victims was in a red car pulled sideways into a petrol pump station and entered into a brawl with a group of men.It is yet to be ascertained as to what was the possible cause for the gunfight. Also, the suspects were yet to be identified.However, one person was shot dead on the shot, while the second person was declared brought dead at a hospital. Three others, who were injured in the gunfight, are recovering.

Main accused arrested in Dileep Saroj death case

Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Allahabad zone, S. N. Sabat on Wednesday confirmed that the main accused in the Dalit law student death case has been arrested.The accused has been identified as Vijay Shankar, who is a Train Ticket Examiner (TTE)."We have arrested the main accused Vijay Shankar in Dileep Saroj death case," Sabat told ANI.Yesterday, three accused were arrested in connection with the same case.On February 11, 26-year-old Saroj was thrashed by a group of people during an argument in Katra Bazar. Gorakhpur deaths: UP HC rejects oxygen supplier's bail plea

The Allahabad High Court has rejected the bail plea of the proprietor of a firm which supplied oxygen to the government-run Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Gorakhpur where dozens of children died last year. More than 60 children, mostly infants, had died at the hospital within a week in August, 2017. There were allegations that the deaths occurred due to disruption in oxygen supply over unpaid bills to the vendor. Justice Yashwant Varma yesterday rejected the bail petition of the proprietor of Pushpa Sales, Manish Bhandari, saying, "The court is inclined to accept the submission that custodial interrogation of the accused may still be warranted and it would not be appropriate to grant him bail at this stage." The counsel for the UP government opposed the petition, saying the investigation in the case was pending and Bhandari may be required for it.

'Insulted' by teacher, teen kills self in Hyderabad

A 16-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence here on Tuesday.The family of the girl claimed that she was allegedly insulted by her college teacher, who questioned her about her deceased friend's relationship, said the Circle Inspector of the Kukatpally police station.The body of the deceased was shifted to a government hospital for postmortem and a case has been registered under section 174 of the code of criminal procedure (CrPC).Further investigation is underway.
