Manipur killings: SC allows CBI to add five officials in SIT

The Supreme Court today allowed the CBI's plea to expand the size of its SIT probing the alleged extra-judicial killings and fake encounters by the Army, Assam Rifles and police in Manipur by adding five more officers, including two who are probing the Vyapam scam cases. The SIT told a bench of justices Madan B Lokur and U U Lalit that at present, the team consists of five officers but they needed five more as the probe into these cases was required to be done expeditiously. The bench, after perusing the five names given by the CBI in its application, said that two out of these five officers were associated with the probe into the Vyapam scam of Madhya Pradesh. "Two of them are doing Vyapam cases?" the bench asked Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Maninder Singh, who was appearing for the CBI. Vyapam scam relates to alleged irregularities in the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board, which holds exams for positions like medical officers, constables, teachers ...

Ankit killing: Delhi CM assures victim's family all possible

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today attended a condolence meeting in memory of 23-year-old Ankit Saxena, who was allegedly killed by the family members of a woman with whom he was in a relationship, and assured his family of all possible help from the Delhi government. The chief minister said his government is committed to fulfilling its responsibility of providing every help to the family of Ankit. "Don't hesitate coming to me whenever you (Saxena's family) are in the need. I will personally be in contact with you," Kejriwal said at the condolence meeting. BSF Commandant remanded to judicial custody till Feb 26

A BSF commandant, arrested on charges of corruption by the CBI, was today remanded to judicial custody by a Fast Track Court here. Jibu D Mathew was produced here before a Fast Track Court in charge of CBI and remanded to judicial custody till February 26, sources said. He was arrested at Alappuzha railway station a few days ago with Rs 47 lakh in cash when he alighted from Shalimar Express, on his way to his home town Pathanamthitta. The CBI's charge was that Mathew had accepted bribe from smugglers from Bangaladesh for favours received by them. Mathew is a Commandant of BSFs 83rd battalion, deployed on the Indo-Bangla border in West Bengal.

Father, Son killed by lightning in Reasi

A father and son died today when lightning struck their house in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Lightning struck in Launcha area of Mahore tehsil in the district at 1600 hours today resulting in death of 30-year-old Ali Mohammad and his 3-year-old son Shabir, a police officer said.

JK Legislature passes Bill for state's first Nat Law varsity

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly today passed a Bill for the establishment of a National Law University in the state. The Bill was introduced in the House by Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Law and Justice, Abdul Haq. He said the proposed university, a first for the state, would boost the quality of legal education. Haq said it had been resolved in the All India Law Ministers' Conference at the National Law School University at Bangalore to improve the quality of legal education. He said various states had already enacted a law for establishment of a National Law University. Several members including Devender Singh Rana, Pawan Kumar Gupta, Ali Mohammad Sagar, Mian Altaf Ahmad, Nawang Rigzin Jora, and Aijaz Ahmad Khan suggested referring the Bill to a select committee for further debate and discussion while others like R S Pathania and Shah Mohammad Tantray supported the legislation. The Bill was later also passed by the Upper House also.

Akhilesh targets UP govt over Dalit youth's killing

Something 'terribly wrong' with SIT probe on Manipur killings:

The Supreme Court today expressed its displeasure over the progress of CBI's SIT in probing alleged extra-judicial killings and fake encounters by the Army, Assam Rifles and police in Manipur and said something was "terribly wrong". The apex court, which said it had given the probe to the CBI so the truth would come out, asked the National Human Rights Commission to depute three persons to associate with the Special Investigation Team to carry out investigations in 17 of the 42 cases lodged by the SIT. The SIT told a bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and U U Lalit that they have registered 42 cases and investigations were going on in accordance with the court's direction. The bench, after going through the status report filed by the SIT, wondered how FIRs were registered against persons who were allegedly killed in fake encounters in Manipur. VVIP chopper case: Court allows Shivani Saxena to travel abroad

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court on Monday allowed AgustaWestland chopper scam accused, Shivani Saxena, to travel abroad for medical treatment.Saxena is the director of two Dubai-based firms M/s UHY Saxena and M/s Matrix Holdings and is an accused in the money laundering case pertaining to the chopper deal scam.Earlier on February 9, a Delhi Court sought the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) response on the plea filed by Saxena.Saxena was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate from Chennai on July 17 last year and granted bail by the Delhi High Court on December 15 on various conditions, including that she will not leave the country without the court's permission.According to the case filed by the Enforcement Directorate, UK-based AgustaWestland International Limited had paid 58 million euros as kickbacks through Tunisia-based Gordian Services Sarl and IDS Sarl.These companies siphoned off the money in the name of consultancy contracts to Interstellar Technologies ..

BNP stages nation-wide protest against Zia's imprisonment

Several thousand supporters of the jailed Bangladeshi ex-premier Khaleda Zia today staged human chain protests across the country to demand the party chief's release following her five-year imprisonment in a graft case. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) supporters in the capital Dhaka and other major cities protested the February 8 court verdict which sentenced the 72-year-old Zia for embezzling 21 million takas (USD 252,000) in foreign donations meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust. ED grills Lalu's second son-in-law in railway hotels PMLA case

The ED today questioned RJD chief Lalu Prasad's son-in-law Rahul Yadav in connection with its money laundering probe in a case related to alleged corruption in the allotment of railway hotels, official sources said. Rahul Yadav appeared before the investigating officer (IO) of the case at about 1 pm and his statement would be recorded under the anti-money law, the sources said. WCD to recommend lifting time bar on reporting child sexual

The Women and Child Development (WCD) Ministry will seek a change in the CrPC to allow filing of complaints of child sexual abuse many years after the crime. The development came after a meeting last month between WCD minister Maneka Gandhi and a 53-year-old Indian-origin scientist from Canada, a survivor of child sexual abuse, who asked for legislative amendments to allow victims to report such crimes even years later. "We are in the process of writing to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) asking them to amend Section 473 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). Lok Adalat settles 2,650 cases amounting to Rs 11.4 crore

A total of 2,650 cases and an amount of Rs 11.49 crore were settled at the Lok Adalat held at the Thane and Palghar district courts on Saturday. DY Gaud, Secretary, District legal Services Authority told PTI that the amount settled in the Lok Adalat was Rs 11.49 crore, adding that a total of 74 panels, comprising sitting judges and senior advocates, were set up to hear the litigants. He said that these panels dealt with a total of 27,361 pre-litigation and pending cases of which 1,511 pre-litigation cases and 1,139 pending cases were amicably resolved. The settlement amount in the pre-litigation cases stood at Rs 1.99 crore while the amount in the pending cases was Rs 9.5 crore, Gaud said. "A total of 301 bank recovery pre-litigation cases were disposed off involving an amount of Rs. 1.46 crore. Among the pending cases, 95 cases of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal were solved with the settlement amount being Rs 5.33 crore," Gaud said. He informed that a total of 515 ..

Kochi orphans complain of abuse

A case was registered by Kochi Police on Monday on the basis of complaints filed by 20 children who recently went missing from a convent-run orphanage.Children of the CKC Convent orphanage at Ponnurunni said in their complaints that they are being physically abused and starved by the management of the institution.They said that they had managed to escape from the orphanage and register a complaint with the police on Monday.Sub Inspector Vijaysankar of the Kadavanthara Janamaithri police station said, "We intervened and made them return to the convent.
