Former village head shot in Haryana

A 42-year-old man was shot dead in Kharkhari village here by three to four unknown assailants allegedly over a personal animosity, police said today. The incident took place when Sanjay Gujjar, a former village head, had gone for morning walk on Kundli Manesar Palwal (KMP) expressway, Gurgaon Police PRO Ravinder Kumar said. During investigation, it was found that three to four unknown armed assailants were waiting for him. When Gujjar covered some distance at KMP, the armed criminals stopped their car and fired over two dozen bullets on him, Kumar said. "Gujjar died on the spot. A motorist informed the police about the crime after which Gujjar was taken to nearby Rockland hospital where he was declared brought dead," Kumar said. A case of murder has been registered against unknown persons on the statement of Gujjar's family members. A probe is on to identify the accused persons", he said, adding it appears to be a case of personal animosity.

Two minor siblings drown in pit in Telangana

Two minor brothers drowned in a pit in Rajanna Sircilla district of Telangana today, police said. The incident occurred in Chandrampet village after Rinku Soona (7) and Biju Soona (5) apparently fell in the artificial pit dug by brick kiln workers while playing, an official said. The deceased were sons of brick kiln worker Rupadhar Soona. The bodies were fished out and sent for postmortem, the official said, adding further investigation is on. Police have registered a case of accidental death.

Katihar man arrested in Kerala gold theft case

Kerala police in association with the local cops today arrested a man from the district for alleged involvement in the theft of 13 kg gold from a jewellery shop in Kerala 13 days back. Kerala police, which reached Katihar this morning, arrested the man from his Bari chowk residence under town police station of the district, Town police station SHO Nirmal Kumar Yadavendu said adding that Kerala police took him to Kerala. Yadavendu said the arrested had served in jail on two earlier occasions in two criminal cases including a mobile phone theft case. Some youths had stolen 12.905 kg gold worth Rs 4.25 crore and Rs 6 lakh cash on January 29, 2018 from Adeshri jewellery in Thrissur district of Kerala, the SHO said adding that the accused has confessed to the crime and said that there are other persons involved in the theft. Man, woman fall off motorcycle, get run over by bus

A couple were killed after falling from their motorcycle and coming under the wheels of a bus here today, police said. The accident happened near the Naval Dockyard here and police said that the motorcycle that the couple were travelling on lost its balance while trying to avoid another motorcycle. The husband and wife duo fell off the motorcycle and got run over by bus belonging to the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, police said. The bodies were shifted to naval hospital INHS Kalyani and Harbour police had registered a case, an official said.

Selfie craze: Boy falls off overbridge, dies

In a quest for perfect selfie, a minor boy fell to death from an overbridge on Domuhani river under Sonari police station, police sources said. The 13-year-old boy identified as Md Tanzir, a resident of Azadnagar under Azadnagar police station, along with his three friends was taking selfie on the newly-built overbridge when he lost control and fell down, police said. The boy was rushed to Tata Main Hospital with the help of locals but the doctors declared him brought dead, sources said. Confirming the report, Officer-in-charge of the police station, Anuj Kumar said the boy was shifted to the hospital before police reached the spot. Law student thrashed outside restaurant succumbs to injuries

A second year student of LLB today succumbed to his injuries two days after he was thrashed by a group following an altercation outside a restaurant here, police said. One of the accused was also arrested after a CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media. Dileep (26), and two of his friends had on Friday came to a restaurant in Karnalganj when an altercation broke out with some persons there. Soon after, they assaulted Dileep with sticks and batons, leaving him grievously injured. On the basis of a complaint lodged by Dileep's brother, an FIR was registered against three unidentified accused, SSP Akash Kulhari said. Newly-wed woman found hanging; husband, in-laws booked

A newly-wed woman was found hanging at her in-laws' house in New Panchwati Colony under G T Road Kotwali area here, following which her husband and in- laws were booked for dowry death, the police said today. The body of the woman was found hanging from the ceiling fan yesterday afternoon, Deputy Superintendent of Police Manisha Singh said. The woman's kin, in their complaint, claimed that her husband was having an affair with another woman. Also an audio clip was recovered in which the woman was purportedly heard saying that in case of her unnatural death, her husband and in-laws should be held responsible, the police officer said. In the clip, the woman, who got married four months back, was also heard saying that her husband wants to marry with some other woman and had threatened to divorce her, the police said. Media professional injured by kite string dies in Pune

A 45-year-old media professional, who was injured after sustaining a severe cut on her neck due to manja (kite string)on Wednesday, succumbed to her injuries today, police said. According to police, Suvarna Mujumdar, who worked in the marketing department of a Marathi daily, was returning home from work when she was grievously injured by the nylon kite string near Shaniwarwada. "We have registered a case under 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC against unidentified persons," said a police officer. Following the incident, police have started a drive against the sale of nylon kite string as it was banned by the National Green Tribunal in 2007.

Man wanted in five cases in Uttar Pradesh arrested in Delhi

A 24-year-old man wanted in five separate cases lodged against him in Uttar Pradesh has been arrested here, Delhi Police today said. Mohsin, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was arrested and a semi-automatic pistol, and a cartridge was seized from him, they said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijayanta Arya said Mohsin was wanted in an attempt to murder case lodged at a police station in Noida and was arrested in Sangam Vihar here. "On seeing the patrolling party, he started running. He was nabbed after a chase," the police said, adding a case under the Arms Act has been lodged against him. MP: Minor burnt alive for resisting rape

A 13-year-old girl in Sustani village of Madhya Pradesh was burnt alive for trying to resist rape.In a horrifying incident that took place on Friday, the accused tried to rape the minor on finding her alone at home. Enraged at the victim's cries of protest, he silenced her by burning her alive by pouring kerosene.Thereafter, the culprit fled from the spot.The victim was admitted in the district hospital on Saturday night, where the doctors said that 50 percent of her body sustained burn injuries. Egg attack: Odisha CM asks police to drop cases against woman

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today directed the police to drop all charges against a woman who was accused of hurling eggs at him in Balasore district last month. The woman, identified as Rajeswari Kamila, was arrested on January 31 after she allegedly threw eggs at the CM at a public meeting at Talsari in Bhograi block of the district. "The Chief Minister today asked the police to withdraw all cases against the woman who had hurled eggs at the CM" an official in the chief minister's office said. Kamila was roughed up by a group of people for the alleged attack and was arrested soon after. She was produced before the court of the Judicial Magistrate (First Class) at Jaleswar, who sent her to jail. Over 103 brides decamp in-laws' house in 'Dolly Ki Doli' style

Movies getting inspired by real incidents is quite regular, but in Rajasthan, it seems the brides have been inspired by Sonam Kapoor starer "Dolly ki Doli", in which the bride runs away with groom's money. In the last four years, the runaway brides have decamped with over Rs 1.75 crore in 103 cases registered by the police, a report said. According to the data released by the state's Home Department, 103 cases were registered during 2014 to 2017 in which middlemen and girls from outside the state ran away with cash, jewelry and other valuables a few days after marriage. Of the 103 cases, police presented charge sheet in 57 cases and probe was pending in 17 cases and a final police report was filed in 29 cases after the probe. Nearly Rs 10 lakh was recovered out of over Rs 1.75 crore in the cases, the data reveals. Maximum cases were registered in Pali, Baran, Bundi, Jhalawar, Bhilawara and Jalore districts of the state.

City builder fined Rs 12 lakh for violations by MahaRera

Taking serious cognisance of the complaints filed by the Mumbai Grahak Panchayat (MGP), state real estate regulator MahaRera has slapped Rs 12 lakh penalty on Kabra and Associates for advertising unregistered projects. In a recent order, the MahaRera has slapped a total penalty of Rs 12 lakh on the builder for violating sections 11 (2) and sections 12 and 14 of the Act. "The builder has violated various regulations of Rera law by advertising unregistered projects. Also the builder had not advertised in compliance with the rules, which mandate the promoter to prominently display MahaRera registered the number and their website address in any ad," MGP chairman Shirish Deshpande told PTI. As per Rera regulations, once a project is registered, developers cannot make any changes in the proposal without taking consent of two-thirds of the home-buyers, which Kabra had violated while advertising one of his projects. Abducted woman, baby rescued from HP; accused held

A woman and her baby who went missing about a month ago from Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, were rescued from Himachal Pradesh, police said today. The alleged kidnapper was also arrested during a joint operation with Himachal Pradesh police, a senior police officer said. According to the officer, Salwa Bhalwal, a resident of Sunderbani, lodged a complaint on January 14, alleging that his wife, along with a baby, had gone missing mysteriously on way to her parents' home. A case was registered and during the course of investigation it came to the fore that the woman and her baby were kidnapped, the officer said. He said the investigation team conducted raids at various places and finally recovered the abducted woman and the baby from Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. Rs 32 lakh worth gold seized at airport by customs

In continuing anti-smuggling operations, Air Intelligence officials of the Customs at the International airport here today seized over one kg of gold valued at Rs 32 lakh in two separate cases. In the first case, five metal pieces, weighing 995 grams and valued at Rs 30.49 lakh were found concealed in a sub woofer brought in as check-in baggage of a passenger who arrived from Dubai, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said. The man was arrested, he said. In the second incident, a male passenger who arrived here from Riyadh was found with two gold bars totally weighing 61 grams, valued at Rs 1.86 lakh. The gold bars were hidden in a shaving cream tube in the man's check-in baggage, Kumar said.

Body of 3-yr-old girl found, police suspect rape before murder

The body of a 3-year-old girl was found from the site of an abandoned college building here today, two days after she went missing, with the police stating that there was a possibility she was raped before being murdered. "The body of the girl was found from an abandoned college building, not far from where she went missing after her uncle dropped her on Friday afternoon at a construction site where her parents work," an official of Thorala police station here said. "Her injuries reveal that her head was smashed on a hard surface. There is a possibility of her being raped before being murdered, though it will be known only after we receive the post mortem report," the official said. The victim's parents are tribals from Jhabua in Madhya Pradesh and worked in Rajkot as contract labourers, police said.

Man sentenced to life in prison for raping 6-year-old girl

A district court here has given life imprisonment to a 56-year-old man for raping a six-year-old girl. Additional sessions judge Sangita Kahlipe ordered that Afajuddin Mohammad Shaikh alias Takala Mama, who hails from Koparkhairane, would remain in jail till his death and asked the District Legal Services Authority to provide adequate compensation to the mother of the victim. Shaikh was also fined with Rs 55,000 by the court. Judge Khalipe ordered that "the accused is sentenced to suffer life imprisonment which shall mean the remainder of the natural life". Additional Public Prosecutor Rekha Hiwrale informed the court that the victim and the accused stayed in the same slum colony in the creek area here. Two killed, six injured as bus overturns in Bihar's Ara

Two persons including a woman were killed and six others injured when a bus they were travelling in fell into a ditch in Bihar's Bhojpur district, police said. The driver lost control of the vehicle as it overturned at Bahoranpur bund under Jagdishpur police station of the district, Jagdishpur Sub-Division Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dayashankar said. The bus was on its way to Bihiya Chaurasta from Damodarpur under Piro police station of the district. The deceased have been identified as Raj Kumar Tiwary (40) and Devvanti Devi (50), he said adding that the injured have been admitted to a nearby private clinic. PIL on acid attack victims: SC notice to Centre, states and

The Supreme Court has sought the Centre's response on a petition relating to sufferings of acid attack victims across India and questioning the sale of acid in open market. A bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, also issued notice to all the states and Union territories on the plea for a direction for compliance of the guidelines and various laws pertaining to the victims. The petition has asked for a direction to increase the minimum compensation amount of Rs 3 lakh for the victims, as directed by the apex court earlier, to at least Rs 12 lakh for the loss caused by such incidents, which led to partial or total disability. It claimed that acid attacks have gone up and the top court's guidelines on prohibition on sale of acid in open market was being violated.
