Two held for duping people through hedge fund investments

The Cyber Cell of Delhi Crime Branch arrested two people for allegedly duping people of Rs 7,50,000 by luring them to invest in Russia based company 'Rosneft hedge fund'.The two accused were identified as Ashish Malik and Sandeep KaushikThe arrest has been made under Section 420 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and money circulation schemes (Banning) Act-1978.The complaint was registered by Vinod Kumar and Ravinder Pal Saini which stated that the accused had taken Rs.7,50,000 from complainant by luring people to invest in Rosneft hedges fund, to be the part of Russia based oil company.The accused persons are taking money in the form of Bitcoins, cash and cheque by luring them to invest in Rosneft hedges fund.The culprits had changed the name of this company as RHF Coin and RHF Gold whose leader has been identified as Ajay Harinath, resident of Mumbai.Another accused, Sunil Singh Chauhan was already arrested in Punjab's Barnala and is lodged at Mansa Jail.Malik, Chauhan and ...

Maharashtra: Two Naxals with bounty Rs. 31 lakh arrested

Two Naxals were arrested from a railway station in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district on Friday.They were carrying a total reward of Rs. 31 lakh on their heads. Rajasthan: 5 people killed, three admitted due to food poisoning

At least five people were killed and three admitted in a critical condition due to food poisoning, after eating halwa (sweet confections) at a house in Rajasthan's Bhutela town.The deceased are yet to be identified, while the others are admitted Bhilwara's District Hospital with immediate treatment.Gangapur, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Govardhan Lal said, "A halwa was made on the arrival of guests from Chavandia village. Man held for 'duping' youths after promising govt jobs

A man, who was on the run for the past two years, was today arrested for allegedly duping atleast 50 youths after promising them government jobs, police said. The accused T. Rajesh, who belongs to Pedapadu village in West Godavari district, reportedly collected Rs 1.30 crore from the youths, a senior police official said. He formerly worked with the Municipal Administration department, the officer said, adding Rajesh, was absconding since the past two years. Police said cases were registered against Rajesh at various places and a probe was on.

3-year-old abducted from Shahdara railway station rescued

The police said today they have rescued a three-year-old boy, who was abducted by a couple from Shahdara railway station, from Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh, and arrested for persons in connection with it. Detailing the abduction, Parwaiz Ahmad, DCP (Railways), said a woman from Bihar was returning to her home with her three children in November last year. They were waiting for their train at Old Delhi railway station where she met the accused. The accused - Raj Kumar and his wife Geeta - befriended her and told her that they were going to Nalanda district in Bihar, where the woman also had to go, Ahmad said. But the accused convinced the woman that there was no train service to Nalanda from Old Delhi railway station and she should accompany them instead to Shahdara railway station. Ex-Pakistan batsman Jamshed faces corruption charges

Former test batsman Nasir Jamshed has been charged with violating five anti-corruption rules by the Pakistan Cricket Board. Jamshed is already serving a one-year ban from cricket, which ends on Tuesday, after the PCB found him guilty of minor charges in its Pakistan Super League spot-fixing investigation last year. "Nasir Jamshed now has 14 days to respond to the notice of charge," the PCB said in a statement today. The charges include fixing matches, accepting money to influence games, and inducing other players to get involved in corrupt activities. Jamshed was arrested in Britain by the National Crime Agency last year in connection with the PSL investigation before he was released on bail. Uber, Waymo settled trade secrets clash

Uber is settling a lawsuit filed by Google's autonomous car unit alleging that the ride- hailing service riped off self-driving car technology. Both sides in the case issued statements confirming the settlement this morning in the midst of a federal court trial in the case. Google's Waymo unit says Uber agreed to take steps to make sure Waymo technology isn't used in Uber's autonomous vehicles. Waymo says Uber also agreed to pay about USD 245 million. Uber's CEO says in a printed statement that the company doesn't believe trade secrets made their way from Waymo to Uber. He also says Uber is taking steps to make sure its self-driving vehicle research represents only Uber's work.

Immigration activist staves off deportation for now

Leading Indian-descent immigrant rights activist Ravi Ragbir whose long battle with immigration officials has drawn support from Democratic politicians in New York won't be deported while a federal judge hears a lawsuit. Ragbir was detained for deportation to his native Trinidad and Tobago on January 11. In court papers dated yesterday, lawyers argued the federal government is wrongly targeting immigrant rights activists and it's a violation of the first amendment. The parties agreed to allow Ragbir to stay while the case was heard. Separately today, he was asking a judge in Newark to allow him to stay in the country pending an appeal on a 2001 criminal conviction for wire fraud.

SC reopens 17-year-old triple murder case, orders SIT probe

The Supreme Court has re-opened a 17-year-old triple murder case, in which a woman and her two children were killed in Uttar Pradesh, and set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by former CBI Special Director M L Sharma to probe it. The case relates to the killing of a woman and her two children on July 24, 2001, in which an FIR was lodged at Pilakhua near Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. A bench comprising Justices J Chelameswar and S Abdul Nazeer ordered an SIT probe on a petition filed by the mother-in-law of the deceased woman who alleged that the Uttar Pradesh police had showed lackadaisical approach in carrying out the investigation. The top court also noted that though the case was handed over to the CBI, the victims preferred to withdraw the case from the apex court allegedly under pressure from the accused. CID arrests two police officers

The CID tonight arrested two police officers, apparently close to former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, for their alleged involvement in misconduct and extortion from civilians, a senior CID officer said. Inspector Subhankar De and sub inspector Chitta Pal were arrested in ongoing operations of the Daspur case, the officer told PTI. Pal was officer-in-charge of Ghatal police station and De was circle inspector there. The CID officers also seized approximately Rs 40 lakh cash and unaccounted wealth during raids at De's residence and approximately Rs 16 lakh cash and unaccounted wealth from Pal, he said. All legal requirements were strictly fulfilled before, during and after these arrests, the senior IPS officer said adding that the duo will be duly forwarded to Court tomorrow, "We will continue with our searches. Curry chef found not guilty of chilli powder attack in UK

A chef at a curry restaurant in Wales was today found not guilty of assault over an allegation that he deliberately threw chilli powder in the face of an unsatisfied diner. Kamrul Islam was accused of attacking David Evans at the Prince of Bengal in Tonypandy in January last year. The 47-year-old, who also owns the Bangladeshi-origin eatery, had denied causing actual bodily harm and said he had acted in self-defence because Evans was being aggressive. A jury at Merthyr Crown Court agreed with his version of events and declared him not guilty today. "I am happy and relieved. I was very confident that the British system would find the right answer, Islam said after the verdict. The prosecution case was that the curry house owner had grabbed a handful of chilli powder and threw it in the face of David Evans, thereby causing him "difficulties with his eyes". Senior citizen found dead, murder suspected

The wife of senior Marathi theatre personality Dilip Kolhatkar was found dead in half-burnt condition at the couple's house here last evening, police said. A case of murder has been registered against unidentified persons. Half-burnt body of Dipali Kolhatkar (65) was found in the couple's flat in Erandwane area last evening. Autopsy revealed that she had been throttled and there were internal head injuries. "Only three people live in the house; Dilip Kolhatkar, the deceased and her 85-year-old mother," said senior inspector Rekha Salunkhe of Alankar police station. "On Thursday, her mother saw smoke coming from the kitchen. When Dipali didn't respond to her calls, her mother called neighbours for help as Dilip Kolhatkar is bed-ridden for the last three years," the officer said.
