Gang behind fake insurance claims held in Rajasthan

The Rajasthan Police has busted an inter-state gang that allegedly made fake life insurance claims with the arrest of six people, including a assistant sub-inspector, an official said today. The gang members were allegedly behind getting insurance claim of an alive person, identified as Jitendra Singh, by giving his forged death certificates to different companies, the state's Special operation group (SOG) official said. "The accused purchased insurance policies from four different companies in the name of Jitendra Singh. And later showed him dead in a road accident by producing fake post- mortem reports and police reports and in the insurance companies," Additional Director General (SOG) Umesh Mishra said. He added that the accused successfully claimed an insurance of worth Rs 12 lakh from a private insurance company, and received two lakh each from Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti. Woman kills self, minor daughter over dowry demand

A 25-year-old woman allegedly poisoned herself and her minor daughter in Kunda area here over dowry demand, police said today. Neha allegedly consumed some poisonous substance with her daughter Ansu (2.5 years) last night, they said, adding both were rushed to a hospital where they died during treatment. An FIR has been registered in this regard against Neha's husband Ashok Yadav and five others for demanding dowry and harassing her, police said.

Man gets life in prison for rape, murder of school girl

A 24-year-old man was today sentenced to life in prison for raping and killing a 12-year-old girl in Palghar district in 2014. Additional Sessions Judge MP Divate held Rahul Gajanan Tumbada, a resident of Sharjamori village in Vasai, guilty of raping and killing the school girl under sections 302 and 376 (2) of the Indian Penal Code. The court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Tumbada and directed that the case be referred to the District Legal Services Authority with recommendations to award adequate compensation to the parents of the victim. Additional Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar told the court that on January 16, 2014, Tumbada offered the girl, who studied in a zilla parishad school, a ride home after school on his motorcycle. He then took her to an isolated place, raped and strangled her to death, Moholkar told court. The girl's body was found in a field in Kaman village on January 18. Following a probe, Tumbada was arrested.

Woman allegedly kills her toddler daughter

Enraged by her repeated crying, a woman allegedly killed her one-year-old daughter at Talwadi village in Dhar district. She was identified as Anita Singh (25). The incident took place on February 7, said Additional Superintendent of Police Raisingh Narvaria. According to her mother-in-law, as the girl started crying, seeking to be suckled, an angry Anita took her inside the house. "Immediately the baby's screams stopped, and then Anita walked out hurriedly, causing her mother-in-law to suspect that something was wrong," Narvaria said. The mother-in-law called neighbours, who went into the house and saw to their horror that the little girl was lying in a pool of blood, her throat slit with a sickle. Police arrested Anita who confessed to killing the baby after getting fed up with her repeated crying, the ASP said. Further probe is on, he added.

Indian student commits suicide at university in UAE

A 19-year-old Indian has committed suicide by allegedly jumping from a building at a university campus in the UAE, a media report said today. Officials found the student lying in a pool of blood and pronounced him dead, Khaleej Times reported. The Dubai Police said that he had jumped from the fifth floor of the building at the Murdoch University campus here. The identity of the victim was not revealed by the police. According to a friend of the student, he had come to the university with his father to pay his fees and told his father that he wanted to use the washroom. It was after this that he jumped from the building. "He was absolutely normal when he spoke to me last night before the incident," the friend said, adding that he did not notice any signs of depression. The police are currently carrying out an investigation to ascertain the cause of his extreme step and ruled out any criminal motive behind the incident. Rally against sealing drive on Feb 15, traders to give roses

Traders in the national capital on Valentine's Day -- February 14 -- would present roses to officials demanding an ordinance by the Centre to end the sealing drive here. This would be followed up by a mega rally against the drive at the Ramleela Maidan on February 15, traders' body Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said today. Thousands of traders from across the city would participate in the rally, CAIT, general secretary, Praveen Khandelwal told reporters. "We will press for our demand for an ordinance by the Centre to end the sealing drive," he said. Khandelwal also said that traders would also give roses to civic agency officials under the 'My Valentine-My Shop' campaign on February 14. The civic bodies are conducting the sealing drive against commercial units, under the supervision of a Supreme Court- appointed monitoring committee, since December last year. Justice Antony Dominic sworn in as Chief Justice of Kerala

Justice Antony Dominic was sworn-in as the new Kerala High Court Chief Justice, in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.Kerala Governor P. Sadasivam administered the Oath of Office in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Raj Bhavan.Chief Secretary Paul Antony read out the Presidential order appointing Justice Dominic as the chief justice.Justice Dominic, a native of Ponkunnam near Kanjirapally in Kottayam district, is the first Keralite to occupy the top post in 17 years. The first person to do that was Justice K.K.Usha in 2001.Justice Dominic completed his law at SDM Law College, Mangalore. He started legal practice as a lawyer in the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Kanjirapally in 1981 and was later shifted to the Kerala High Court in 1986.Justice Dominic became an additional judge of the Kerala High Court in 2007. Within a year, he was elevated as permanent judge of the High Court, Kerala.

AG's help sought on live broadcast of SC proceedings

The Supreme Court on Friday sought the assistance of the Attorney General KK Venugopal on a plea seeking live streaming of the proceedings in the top court.The three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, also sought a response from the Central government.Senior Supreme Court lawyer, Indira Jaising and advocate Mathew Nedumpara, filed the Public Interest Litigations (PILs).In her petition, Jaising stated that if the cases of national importance were telecast live, it would bring accessibility and transparency in the administration of justice and also do away with "the chances of any misreporting, errors or second-hand information".The apex court will next hear the matter after two weeks.

Punjab Police get vital clues in Maur Mandi blast case

The Punjab Police today claimed to have got some vital clues in connection with a car explosion in which seven people were killed last year in Bathinda's Maur Mandi. The blast had occurred near a poll campaign venue of Congress leader Harminder Singh Jassi whose daughter is married to the son of jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. The police and counter-intelligence officials had yesterday produced four people, all car mechanics and painters, before a court in Talwandi Sabo near Bathinda, an official said. They identified the car based on the repainting and other works done on it and after giving details to the case's investigating officer in Bathinda, they decided to record their statement before the magistrate, police said. UP: Drugs worth Rs. 1 crore seized, 2 held

The police on Friday arrested two persons and seized sample medicines worth over Rs one crore in Amroha and Sambhal of Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad.The sample medicines were being distributed to the physicians illegally by the duo.The police recovered the sample medicines during a routine checking at Hasanpur's bus stand on Wednesday here.The department sent the recovered drugs for a laboratory test.Moradabad and Amroha drug inspectors are investigating the case but no complaint has been registered in this regard yet."All the medicines were for the treatment of cancer and other chronic diseases. The accused used to supply samples from Delhi to Moradabad, Mandal, Meerut and Ghaziabad. The cost of recovered medicines is more than Rs one crore. The samples of drugs have been sent to Lucknow laboratory centre for checking," said RP Pandey, Assistant Drug Commissioner.

LeT terrorist jailed for 7 years in PMLA case

A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist has been convicted and sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment in connection with terror financing and money laundering case.The Special Court in Bengaluru sentenced Bilal Ahmed Quta alias Imran Jalal, in prison under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).The terrorist of the Pakistan-based terror outfit, who had been operating from Karnataka, was fined Rs 50,000 by the court.Quta, who was involved in these activities since 2001, was booked by the Enforcement Directorate under the criminal provisions of the PMLA in 2009.In the year 2007, the Karnataka Police arrested him in Bengaluru for carrying arms and explosive.

Two held in DA case against Hyderabad devp agency official

Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau today said it has arrested two persons in connection with a disproportionate assets case filed against a top official of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). The official, K Purushotham Reddy, who is Director (Planning) of HMDA, is currently under suspension. The two, A Yadava Reddy and G Nishanth Reddy, have been arrested for allegedly helping Purushotham Reddy park his ill-gotten money into real estate and construction business, the ACB said. Early this month, ACB sleuths filed a case against Purushotham Reddy for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The official, who was suspended after the case was filed, is said to be absconding. Bikaner land scam case: ED raids alleged Vadra associate

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today searched the Faridabad premises of a person allegedly linked to Robert Vadra in connection withits money laundering probe in a land scam case in Bikaner, officials said. ED sleuths began searching Mahesh Nagar's premises in Faridabad, bordering the national capital, from early morning, the officials said. Nagar is said to be associated with Ms Skylight Hospitality Private Limited, a firm with alleged links to Congress president Rahul Gandhi's brother-in-law Vadra. In December last year, the agency had arrested Ashok Kumar, a close associate of Nagar, and another person, Jaiprakash Bagarwa. The agency had searched the premises of both Kumar and Nagar in April last year. The "authorised representative" in four cases of land purchase in Rajasthan's border town Bikaner was Nagar.
