Two more arrested in Chandan Gupta's murder case

Kasganj Police on Wednesday arrested two more accused in connection with the murder of Chandan Gupta in Kasganj violence on January 26.Two accused, identified as Naseem and Waseem, were arrested with two country-made pistols along with two cartridges.Earlier on Tuesday, another accused, identified as Salman, was arrested in connection with the case.On February 3, the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested one accused, Rahat Qureshi.Meanwhile, on January 31, Salim, the prime accused was held in the killing of Chandan Gupta who was killed after an unauthorised bike rally was taken out here by RSS-affiliated students' group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in the city to commemorate the Republic Day.

SP demands CBI probe into three 'fake' police encounters

In a memorandum addressed to Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik, the Samajwadi Party (SP) today demanded a CBI probe into three alleged fake encounters by the police in the state. The workers of the party staged a demonstration at the collectorate here, protesting against the deteriorating law- and-order situation in the state. "These bogus encounters are proof that in order to hide its failure to control the law-and-order situation, the state government has chosen this mode," district SP chief Tanveer Ahmed alleged, before submitting the memorandum to Additional District Magistrate (law-and-order) Aditya Kumar Srivastava. Ahmed alleged that the attempt to kill Jitendra Yadav, a gym trainer, the killing of Madhav, an eight-year-old boy of Mohanpur Aduki village, and the encounter of Sumit Gurjar showed that the police personnel could go to any extent to get a promotion. Amidst a thunderous applause, he also announced that the SP would open a "pakora" counter on February 11 .

IM operative Haroon Naik gets 6 yrs jail in fake currency case

A special court convicted an important Indian Mujahdeen operative, Haroon Naik, today in connection with the seizure of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) and sentenced him to six years imprisonment. Another accused Asrar Tailor, alias Sagari, was given a similar punishment in the case. However, the special NIA court acquitted Azhar-ul-Islam Siddiqui alias Munna of all charges in the case. The case, which was investigated by the Maharashtra ATS, was later handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA). According to the prosecution, the ATS had raided a private guest house in Wadala in August 2011 and arrested Naik. They recovered currency notes with a face value of Rs 9.75 lakh in Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denominations from the place. During Naik's interrogation, he told the sleuths that Asrar had indoctrinated him to participate in "jihadi activities" after undergoing militant training. SC grants protection to Bhima-Koregaon violence accused

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted interim protection from arrest to Milind Ramakant Ekbote, the prime accused in the January 1 Bhima-Koregaon violence.The apex court bench headed by Justice Kurian Joseph granted Ekbote interim protection from arrest till February 20.It also sought a response from the Maharashtra government on his plea for anticipatory bail.On Jan 29, Ekbote's plea was mentioned before the bench, led by Justice Gavai after a sessions court refused to grant him any interim protection from arrest.Earlier last month, a special court in Pune had rejected a plea for anticipatory bail filed by Ekbote, in regards to the same case.Two FIRs were registered against Ekbote alleging his role in the violence at Bhima Koregaon at a time when Dalits in huge numbers had gathered in Perne village to mark 200th year of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon.Ekbote is facing charges for inciting violence, attempt to murder and atrocities against Dalits.On January 1, the violence left at Bhima

Rape accused arrested from Hathras in UP

A man has been arrested from Hathras town in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly raping a 13-year- old girl in southeast Delhi's Badarpur area, police said today. Bablu, 20, was arrested from the town yesterday, a day after the matter was reported to the Delhi Police, an officer said. The matter came to light when the mother of the girl noticed behavioural changes in her. After remaining reluctant initially, the girl told her mother about her trauma, he said. The woman filed a complaint at Badarpur police station. A team was formed that nabbed the accused from Hathras, he said. The girl, a Class VII student, was alone at her home when the accused barged into the property and raped her, he said. The parents of the girl work at a garment factory. The accused lived in the same building where the girl and her family lives.

HC seeks ED's reply on bail pleas of Chhagan Bhujbal, nephew

The Bombay High Court today directed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to file a reply on the bail pleas filed by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal and his nephew Sameer Bhujbal within two weeks. The Bhujbals have approached the high court against a special court's order, rejecting their bail pleas. A single bench of Justice A S Gadkari is likely to hear the pleas on February 27. In December last year, a special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court had rejected the bail pleas of the Bhujbals in a case of alleged money laundering. Chhagan Bhujbal, the former Maharashtra deputy chief minister and former state public works department minister, was arrested in March, 2016 after an ED inquiry revealed that he and his associates allegedly misused their office and caused financial loss to the government. Fire due to defective LPG cylinder, IOC to give Rs 30L to kids

The apex consumer commission has ordered Indian Oil Corporation to pay Rs 30-lakh compensation to two minor siblings, who were injured and whose parents died in a fire accident due to LPG leak from the firm's cylinder in 2005. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) said it was pained at the "insensitive attitude of the country's one of the biggest monopolistic public sector undertakings, IOC", which did not take the accident seriously. A bench comprising NCDRC president Justice D K Jain and its member M Shreesha upheld Gujarat State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission's award of Rs 25 lakh compensation, to be paid by IOC, and also added Rs five lakh further compensation. The court said the conduct of the manufacturer was "reprehensive". Reevaluate how electronic docs be authenticated: HC to courts

The Delhi High Court has held that courts ought to reevaluate the manner by which they require electronic documents to be authenticated. Dealing with a case relating to a loan default, Justice Pratibha M Singh observed that merely because a printout of statement of an account is filed as secondary evidence with necessary certificate, does not make it less valid. The court's observations were made while setting aside a trial court order, which had dismissed the recovery suit of the ICICI Bank on grounds that it failed to file the original loan recall notice. The high court, however, observed, "Despite all the original documents being on record, the trial court proceeded on an erroneous assumption that the original loan recall notice dated February 11, 2014, has not been placed on record and only a photocopy of the same has been placed on record. Gitanjali Gems defends MD Choksi in PNB matter

Gitanjali Gems today said its Managing Director Mehul Choksi has been "falsely implicated" in a Rs 280 crore cheating case and will take legal steps to remove his name from the list of accused in the FIR. Choksi is among the four accused in the FIR filed by the CBI for allegedly cheating Punjab National Bank of Rs 280.7 crore in 2017. Two women naxals carrying cash rewards surrender in Gadchiroli

Two dreaded women naxals, carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered in Gadchiroli district today, police said. The two naxals were identified as Jaya alias Shanti Masu Mattami (24), deputy commander of platoon number 14, and Ranita alias Sunita Namdev Kodape (18) of Sironcha Dalam. According to police, while Mattami carried a cash reward of Rs 4 lakh on her head, the bounty on Kodape was Rs 2 lakh. Mattami has 21 cases of serious offences, including murders, encounters and ambush attack. Kodape, who had been with Sironcha Dalam from February 2016, has eight cases of murder and 23 other offences of serious nature registered against her, police said. "The duo was involved in serious offences like killings, encounters and ambush attack," police said. This is the first surrender by naxals in Gadchiroli this year, police said adding that 22 ultras had given themselves up in the district last year.

SC asks gang rape convicts to share iCloud password with woman

The Supreme Court today asked the convicts in a gang rape case, involving a student of a private university in Haryana, to share with the woman the password of 'iCloud' where they had allegedly stored her obscene photographs. 'iCloud' is a mobile application used for storing data, including photographs, videos, documents and music, and it is tough to hack it without a password. A bench comprising justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao observed that it cannot tolerate "continous blackmail" and asked the convicts to share the password to show bonafide to remain on bail. "We are concerned about the present situation. There are pictures of the girl with one of you (convicts). It is difficult for us to accept and tolerate continuous blackmail," the bench told the counsel representing the convicts. 3 arrested with 13 kg heroin, 20 kg poppy in Jammu

Three persons were arrested and 13 kg heroin and 20 kg poppy was seized from them in the city here, police today said. During a surprise inspection at the Traffic Check Post (TCP) Nagrota, a bus, which was coming from Srinagar to Jammu, was stopped for checking, a police official said. During frisking of passengers, police seized eight packets of contraband heroin from 38-year-old Raja Kursheed, and 5 packets of heroinfrom Mohd Ashraf Khan (60), he said. The market value of the drugs seized is about Rs 65 crore, the official said. A case was registered and an investigation was underway, he added. SC to commence hearing in Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute

The Supreme Court is likely to commence from tomorrow the crucial hearing on a batch of petitions in the politically-sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case. Tomorrow's hearing assumes significance in the wake of the rejection by a special bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, the vehement submission by Sunni Waqf Board and others that the pleas be heard after the next general elections. The bench, also comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and S A Nazeer, had made clear on December 5 last year, that it would begin final hearing on the petitions from February 8 and had asked the parties to file the requisite pleadings in the meantime. DA case: Relief to Nayak as court accepts ACB's closure report

In a major reprieve to 'encounter specialist' Daya Nayak, a special court today accepted the closure report filed by the ACB against him in a disproportionate assets case. Special ACB court judge Dilip Gudadhe accepted the anti-graft agency's closure report. "We had filed a closure report recently and the court accepted it," an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said, adding that they were waiting for the copy of the order. In the closure report, it has been mentioned that his known sources of income are less than 10 per cent (of his known sources of income), the official said. "If the assets disproportionate to the known sources of income are 10 per cent or less than that, then no case is made against the accused," he said. Pakistan's former ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani has instructed his advocate and counsel to withdraw from further Supreme Court proceedings in the Memogate case, citing the "lowest" standing of the country's "politicised judiciary". The Memogate controversy erupted in 2011 when Pakistani- American businessman Mansoor Ijaz claimed to have received an "anti-army" memo from Haqqani, the then-envoy to the US. Haqqani was accused of sending the memo seeking help from the US to stop a military coup in Pakistan following the raid that killed al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in May 2011.
