Odisha CEO seeks names of IPS for appointment of SP at

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Odisha has asked the state's Home Department to recommend a panel of three names from among IPS officers for posting as Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bargarh district where bypoll will take place on February 24. CEO, Surendra Kumar wrote a letter to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) to ensure posting of a new SP in Bargarh district in place of existing Bargarh SP Jugal Kishor Kumar Banoth. Meanwhile, the Home Department has directed DGP RP Sharma to recommend names of three IPS officers, sources said. Earlier on January 30, opposition BJP had approached the Election Commission of India alleging that the Bargarh Collector, SP and some state government employees are working as the agents of the ruling BJD and sought their transfer ahead of Bijepur by-polls on February 24.

Delhi Police sub inspector gets 4-year jail

A sub inspector (SI) of Delhi Police has been sentenced to four-year jail in bribery case.The Special Judge, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases, Tis Hazari Courts, Delhi sentenced Ramesh Chand Diwan, then Sub Inspector of Narela Police Station to undergo four years simple imprisonment with fine of Rs. 20,000 in a bribery case.The CBI had registered the case on July 16, 2015 on a complaint that SI Diwan was threatening the complainant and demanding bribe of Rs. 15,000 from the complainant for not implicating him and his family members in a case registered against him at Narela Police Station, which was investigated by said sub inspector.The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused while accepting a bribe from the complainant. After investigation, a chargesheet was filed on December 2, 2015 in the Court of Special Judge, CBI Cases, Tis Hazari Court, Delhi.The trial court found the accused guilty and convicted him.

ED summons TMC MP K D Singh in Rs 1,900 cr ponzi scam probe

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Trinamool Congress MP K D Singh in connection with its money laundering probe into an alleged ponzi scam case pegged at over Rs 1,900 crore. According to official sources, Singh, the TMC's Rajya Sabha member, has been summoned here tomorrow by the investigating officer (IO) of the case. The MP has been summoned under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the IO is expected to record his statement, they said. Phone call and SMS sent by PTI to the TMC MP went unanswered. The ED's probe against Singh and his firm Ms Alchemist Infra Realty Limited dates back to September 2016 when it filed a criminal case under the PMLA taking cognisance of a charge sheet filed against the company, its directors and others by market regulator SEBI. NIA gets six-day custody of LeT suspect in terror case

A Delhi court today sent a suspected LeT member, arrested from Uttarakhand for allegedly raising funds for terrorist activities, into a six-day custody of the NIA for interrogation to unearth his larger conspiracy. Abdul Samad, 22, is believed to be a hawala operator. He was arrested in Haridwar yesterday and brought to Delhi. Samad was produced before Additional Sessions Judge Tarun Saharawat, who sent him into the custody of the NIA. The National Investigating Agency told the court that the accused was required for sustained custodial interrogation and he will be confronted with other accused arrested earlier. The agency told the court that Samad will to be taken to various locations across India in connection with its ongoing probe. He is the fifth accused arrested in the case. Tension erupts in Gaya over abduction of three children

Tension erupted here today over the kidnapping of three children, one of whom was found dead while the remaining two were spotted with injury marks on their bodies, police said. According to Vinay Kumar, Deputy Inspector General of police for Magadh Range, locals staged a protest in Gevalbigha locality, setting ablaze tyres over the abduction of Tannu Kumari, Ankit Kumar and Suraj Kumar. Suspended cop arrested a day after shooting at colleague

A suspended policeman, who had shot at and injured an official here yesterday after a tiff, was arrested today in Kishanganj district. Katihar Superintendent of Police Siddharth Mohan Jain said the suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector Zakir Hussain, who had fled after opening fire at SHO of Sudhani police station Rakesh Raman, was arrested by Kishenganj police this morning and sent to Katihar. Hussain was being interrogated and he has claimed that Raman had been using foul language while talking to him for quite some time. Last night, things reached a flashpoint as he took out his service revolver and opened fire, Jain said adding that the weapon has also been seized. Raman had received the gunshot in his arm. Woman cop's murder: HC directs lower court to complete trial

The Madras High Court today directed a lower court to complete the trial within three months and dispose of a case of rape and murder of a woman constable pending for over six years. Justice M S Ramesh gave the direction while allowing a petition from P Mariammal, the mother of the deceased, Jayamani. The petitioner had submitted that on August 23, 2009, her daughter, while returning home after duty, was offered a lift by the accused, Shankar alias Jaishankar at Adhiyur. The accused took the woman, against her will, to a burial ground and when she attempted to escape, he attacked her with a weapon, the petitioner had submitted. After she fainted, the accused raped and murdered her, the petition had alleged, adding that he also took a gold chain and other valuables of the victim. Plea in SC to bar lawmakers from practising law in courts

A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking barring of serving MPs, MLAs and MLCs from practising as advocates in courts across India during their entire tenure as lawmakers. Alternatively, the plea, which is likely come up for hearing in the apex court during the week, has sought setting aside of the Bar Council of India (BCI) rules prohibiting public servants in general from practising law in courts. "The injury caused to the public because a salaried person and particularly a public servant cannot practise as an advocate but legislators are practising which is violation of Article 14 (Right to Equality) of the Constitution. Student lynching case: 1 student gets death, 5 others lifer

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court today sentenced a student to death and five others were given life imprisonment for lynching a 23-year-old university student who was falsely accused of blasphemy. Cal HC directs CID to probe rape allegation against TMC MLA

The Calcutta High Court today directed the state CID to investigate an allegation of rape against a Trinamool Congress MLA by a woman who claimed he had sexually exploited her with the promise of a job. Justice Debangshu Basak directed that an officer of the rank of a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) probe the allegation against Chopra MLA Hamidul Rahman. The woman had moved the petition before the HC seeking the transfer of the case to the CID and claiming that the North Dinajpur district police had not been able to proceed with the probe since 2014, when she filed the case before a magistrate. Government counsel Amitesh Banerjee produced a report by the North Dinajpur superintendent of police which also proposed that the investigation be handed over to the CID in view of the serious nature of the charge. HC directive to highways dept on complaint against two firms

The Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu Highways department Director General to inquire into allegations that two firms owned by a same person were getting all contracts related to the department in the state in collusion with officials. Justice K Ravichandrabaabu gave the direction on a petition by another contractor C P Senthil Kumar seeking an inquiry into the alleged fraudulent activities of the two firms registered with the department. The petitioner alleged that in the recent past all the works covered in various tenders floated by the Tamil Nadu highways department were being awarded to the particular contractors and 'genuine' contractors like him were being neglected by citing flimsy grounds. DVAC officials question varsity faculty members

Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption today questioned some faculty members at the Bharathiar University days after its Vice-Chancellor A Ganapathy was arrested on bribery charges. Three DVAC officials questioned some senior faculty members and also the Registrar in-charge as part of investigations into the case, university sources said. The inquiry lasted about 30 minutes. Woman detective's police custody extended till Feb 11

A court here today extended till February 11 the police custody of Rajani Pandit, said to be the first woman detective of the country, who was arrested for her alleged involvement in illegal procurement of call detail records (CDRs). Pandit was presented before Judicial Magistrate First Class S L Gupta, who extended her custody till February 11. The crime branch had sought the extension of Pandit's custody, saying it needed to interrogate her further in connection with the case, DCP (Crime) Abhishek Trimukhe said. Pandit (54) was arrested by the Thane Crime Branch officials on February 2. According to the police, Pandit's name had cropped up after four private detectives, arrested earlier in connection with the case, had revealed her alleged involvement. The case against the four private detectives was that they were illegally procuring CDRs from some persons in neighbouring Mumbai and selling them for money, the police had said.

Kasganj: Police recover weapon used to kill Chandan Gupta

Police today claimed to have recovered the weapon used by the main accused in the murder of Chandan Gupta here on Republic Day during a procession. The country-made weapon was found on the basis of the information provided by Salim, the main accused, during interrogation, Superintendent of Police, Piyush Srivastava said. Two arms licences issued in Salim's name have been suspended following a directive by District Magistrate RP Singh. "There were two licences - a revolver and DBBL gun - in Salim's name. It is also being probed if they had been used during the January 26 incident," Singh said. Gupta was killed in communal violence that broke out in Kasganj on the Republic Day.
