A labourer died and three others fell unconscious this evening after a cylinder explosion at an ice factory near Batala town here led to leakage of ammonia gas, police said. All four, including the owner of the unit, were taken to a civil hospital. A labourer identified as Gora was declared brought dead by doctors, they said. The owner Gursharan Singh, his brother and another labourer are undergoing treatment at the hospital. Further investigations are underway, police added.

A 14-year-old girl ended her life after authorities at the private school where she studied allegedly didn't allow her to attend classes for not paying the fees, police said. The girl, a class IX student, allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her house in Malkajgiri area today evening. She was feeling humiliated after she was asked to leave the class for non-payment of fees, family members alleged. Based on the complaint of family members, Malkajgiri police registered a case of abetment of suicide against the school officials. Further investigation is underway.

A court here has sentenced four people to life imprisonment on charges of killing a couple over a vehicle parking issue in 2013. The prosecution's case was that the couple -- Sankar and Prema -- had problems with their neighbours over parking and used to quarrel with them frequently. On April 14, 2013, following an argument, four people attacked the couple with iron rods, leading to their death. The case was in the Mahila court and the verdict was delivered by judge Muralidharan around 11 PM yesterday. The government has proposed to make the Prevention of Money-laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA)Act more effective."Amendments have been made in Prevention of Money-laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) through Finance Act 2018. These amendments aim at further enhancing the effectiveness of the Act, widen its scope and take care of certain procedural difficulties faced by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in prosecution of PMLA cases," the Finance Ministry said in a statement.The bail provisions have also been amended to make bail conditions uniform for all offences under the PMLA."Other amendment in bail provisions would make the applicability of bail conditions uniform to all the offences under PMLA, instead of only those offences under the schedule which are liable to imprisonment of more than 3 years. C. S. V. Two days after he was booked on charge of sexually harassing girl students, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) professor K Babulu was arrested from Rajahmundry, police said today. An FIR was registered against Babulu by Sarpavaram police on January 30 on the basis of a complaint lodged by JNTU Registrar Subbarao who had forwarded a letter submitted to him by 20 girl students. "Babulu was traced to the outskirts of Rajahmundry city late last night and was arrested," said Kakinada SP Ravi Varma. The professor was produced in a magisterial court which remanded him in judicial custody, he said. Around 20 girl students had alleged that the professor sexually harassed them while conducting viva voce tests last month. Students had staged a protest seeking removal of Babulu and registering a criminal case against him.
The Patna High Court has allowed a minor rape survivor to abort her 22-week-old foetus after she petitioned it seeking to terminate her pregnancy. Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh directed the AIIMS, Patna, to conduct the procedure without charging her and asked the facility to take precautions for the safety of the petitioner. The hospital would preserve the terminated foetus for a DNA test in connection with the case, the judge said in his order yesterday. The judge also ordered the trial court, where the case is pending, to conclude the trial in the shortest possible time. The girl was 17 years old when she was allegedly raped by a youth of her village in Saran district on August 3 last year. An FIR in connection with the matter was filed on October 24 after the accused threatened to kill the girl if she disclosed the incident to anyone. The Calcutta High Court today directed the city police not to arrest 29 colleagues of Arindam Basu, the general manager of floating hotel "Floatel" who went missing after falling into the Hooghly river from a launch during an office picnic on January 21. The 29 colleagues of Basu had also gone on the picnic, which was organised on motor-launch MV Shibani. Basu, who had allegedly fallen from the launch into the river in the afternoon, is yet to be found. The 29 employees of Floatel had moved anticipatory bail petitions in the high court on the ground of a reasonable apprehension of arrest by the police. Their counsel, Sourav Chatterjee, submitted before a division bench of Justice Joymalyo Bagchi and Justice R Bharadwaj that Basu's wife Aditi had filed an FIR, without naming anyone, in connection with the incident. A lower rung police official was arrested here today for allegedly abetting suicide of his wife, police said. Police Naik Sunil Kharat (35)'s wife Samal (23) had allegedly hanged herself in their house last afternoon, apparently due to frequent quarrels between the couple, a Palghar police station official said. Darren Osborne, 48, who was heard by witnesses saying he wanted to "kill all the Muslims", was convicted by a jury at the end of a trial at Woolwich Crown Court in London today. Vikram Singh Puar, a member of the former royal family of Dewas, has been acquitted by a court here in a murder case. Puar is the son of BJP MLA Gayatri Raje. He and 12 others were accused of killing a person over a land dispute at Raghogarh village in Dewas district on March 18, 2015. While all other accused were acquitted on December 17, 2016, Puar, who was absconding and surrendered in January 2017, faced a separate trial, his counsel Ashok Verma said. On Wednesday, Additional Sessions Judge Joginder Singh acquitted Puar. Pratap Lodhi and two others were injured during a scuffle over the possession of a piece of land, owned by the Puar family. The Gauhati High Court today directed the defence ministry to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to a person for violation of the right to privacy by Army men during a search at his house. A division bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Nelson Sailo, in its judgment on a plea filed by Surajit Gogoi, held that the right to privacy of the petitioner under Article 21 of the Constitution was violated by Army personnel. The bench directed the ministry to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to Gogoi. The petitioner may approach the appropriate civil court of competent jurisdiction for compensation for any other claims within four months, the judges said. The court directed the Union of India and Army authorities to review the modalities of such operation and issue necessary guidelines "so that collateral damages are minimised, if not at all eliminated". Gogoi had filed a writ petition before the High Court alleging that some Army personnel unauthorisedly entered his house in his absence .
A 16-year-old boy allegedly mowed down a 25-year-old cook in northwest Delhi's Prashant Vihar while he was driving his father's car, police said today. The victim was identified as Manjeet alias Johnny. The accident happened on Tuesday and the victim succumbed to injuries today. Police said that the juvenile is a student of Class XII at a private school and he had taken out his father's Hyundai Santro for a drive. Manjeet was crossing the road near sector 11 traffic signal when he was hit by the juvenile, who it is suspected was driving the vehicle at a high speed, police said. The victim was rushed to BSA Hospital and later he was taken to Maharishi Valmiki Hospital when his condition deteriorated. He died this morning at the hospital. The deceased worked as a cook at a local eatery. The juvenile was apprehended and his father has also been booked under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act for allowing a minor to drive a vehicle.
A Nigerian national was arrested today from Baga beach village in Goa for allegedly possessing drugs worth Rs 1.35 lakh, police said. The accused, identified as Philip Godwin, was arrested on a tip off by Calangute Police near a lane leading to a famous night club at Baga. Nagrali, a software engineer, approached the city police and a case of cheating has been registered against the Softbank-backed Flipkart valued at over USD 17 billion in central Mumbai's Byculla police station. In his complaint, Nagrali said he had ordered an iPhone-8 on the shopping portal and made the full payment of Rs 55,000.
