Thane ZP PWD engineer arrested while 'taking bribe'

An executive engineer of the Public Works Department of Thane Zilla Parishad has been arrested while allegedly taking a bribe from a contractor. The Anti-Corruption Bureau laid a trap and arrested Padmakar Sukhdeve (57) while accepting Rs 1,00,000 at his office yesterday, said inspector Atul Aher, ACB-Thane. Sukhdeve had allegedly demanded Rs 5,00,000 as commission from the contractor who had carried out some road work in the ZP limits. Probe is on.

Suraj Pal Amu resigns from primary membership of BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suraj Pal Amu on Tuesday resigned from the primary membership of the party.The BJP leader is infamous for offering Rs 10 crore bounty for beheading actress Deepika Padukone and director Bhansali in November 2017 for allegedly distorting historical facts and showing Queen Padmini in a bad light in the film Padmaavat.Amu was also arrested on January 25 for making the controversial statement.However, the Gurugram Police granted him bail on Tuesday.

Three persons killed in explosion at quarry godown

At least three persons were killed in an explosion at the explosive godown of a quarry at Alakdeshi village in Giridih district today, police said. At least three persons were killed in the incident, said the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Rajdhanwar) Prabhat Ranjan. The bodies were blown to pieces under the impact of the explosion this evening, he said. Exact number of death caused in the explosion would be known only after investigation, he said. The incident occurred on the bordering area of Giridih-Koderma districts. Ranjan admitted that rescue personnel were facing difficulty to carry out operation due to darkness. The quarry owner, who lives in Koderma, has been summoned, the SDPO added.

SRK bungalow: Notice issued for alleged flouting of norms

Authorities in adjoining Raigad district have issued a notice to Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan over alleged violation of purchase norms for agricultural land, an official said today. "Raigad district Collector Dr Vijay Suryawanshi has issued notice to Shah Rukh Khan for alleged violation of conditions of permission granted to purchase land," a senior district official told PTI. The notice pertains to the 19,960 sq m land bought by Deja Vu Farms for agricultural use but now consists of a bungalow with a swimming pool and a private helipad, the official, who did not want to be identified, said. "The district collector had given permission for agri purpose and Deja Vu Farms constructed a bungalow. This is a clear violation," the official said. The bungalow is purportedly owned by Shah Rukh Khan. The notice to the actor has been issued under section 84CC of the Bombay Tenancy and Agricultural Lands Act, the official said. Fmr Navy chief Ramdas files plea in SC for independent probe

Former Navy chief Admiral (retd) L Ramdas has filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking an independent inquiry by a panel of retired apex court judges and former police officers into the alleged mysterious death of special CBI judge B H Loya. Loya, who was hearing the sensitive Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, had died of cardiac arrest in Nagpur on December 1, 2014, when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague's daughter. Some members of Loya's family had alleged foul play in his death. BJP chief Amit Shah was one of the accused in the Sheikh encounter case in which he was later discharged. The application, filed by Ramdas, has also sought a direction to the Centre to cooperate with the inquiry committee and provide the necessary documents. Bribery case: probationary IPS officer's house sealed

The anti-corruption bureau of Maharashtra police today sealed the Nanded residence of G Vijay Krishnan Yadav, a probationary IPS officer who has been named in a case of bribery. Yadav, posted as probationary Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) at Nanded, around 550km from Mumbai, allegedly demanded Rs 3 lakh from a man to 'dilute' a case of theft. The man lodged a complaint with the ACB, which laid a trap and caught Yadav's aide Sunny Singh Bugai (34) while accepting Rs 1 lakh on Monday. Bugai was placed under arrest. The 2015-batch IPS officer and his aide had earlier accepted Rs 1 lakh, the ACB said. An offence of theft had been registered against the 34 -year-old complainant at Tivasa Police Station. Yadav and Bugai allegedly demanded money from the complainant for not arresting him and diluting the charges against him. 26-year-old man beaten to death

A 26-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death for questioning an autorickshaw driver who reportedly misbehaved with his sister, police said. Sujit was pushed to the ground and beaten up by the 32-year-old driver on January 28, when he was confronted, they said. According to police, Sujit, who suffered serious head injuries, died this morning. The accused, Mithun is absconding, they said. Cases under various IPC sections including 302 (punishment for murder) have been registered against the accused.

Sanjiv Chaturvedi in HC for contempt action against CBI

Sanjiv Chaturvedi, an Indian Forest Service (IFoS) officer, today moved a contempt plea in the Delhi High Court against the CBI for allegedly violating judicial orders that said the agency has no absolute exemption from disclosing information under the transparency law. In his petition, which was listed before Justice V K Rao, Chaturvedi has contended that the high court ruling that CBI, and other such agencies, have to disclose information held by them pertaining to allegations of corruption and human rights violations, was binding on them. He has alleged that the high court orders were not being followed by the central public information officers (CPIO) of CBI as it denied him information he had sought regarding certain corruption cases at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Gold valued at Rs 1.16 Cr seized from air passenger in city

Gold bars valued at Rs 1.16 crore were seized from a 43-year old man, who arrived here from Jeddah today, Customs department officials said. Based on intelligence, a passenger, Rafi Syed was intercepted at the international airport's arrival hall and his checked-in baggage was examined by Customs officials, which revealed the presence of 37 gold bars weighing 3.8 kilograms. The gold bars were hidden in two plastic bags and were valued at Rs 1.16 crore, a release from the Principal Customs Commissioner's (Air Intelligence) office said. He has been arrested, it added. In two other separate incidents last week, gold valued totally at about Rs 15 lakh was seized from two passengers who arrived from Singapore and Dubai, the release said adding further probe was on.

Egg thrown at Odisha CM during an event

J Dey murder case: Final arguments begin

The prosecution today began final arguments in the journalist Jyotirmoy Dey murder case. Special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat today told the court how the killing took place, and took the court through the evidence on record. He will continue his arguments tomorrow. Dey, who wrote under the byline 'J Dey', was shot dead in Powai area of Mumbai on June 11, 2011. The court had, on August 31, 2017, framed charges against Rajan. According to the CBI's charge sheet, Rajan had the veteran crime reporter killed because he was miffed with some articles written by Dey, and also because a planned book of Dey's portrayed Rajan as a 'chindi' (petty) criminal. Rajan was arrested at the Bali airport in Indonesia on October 25, 2015, and deported to India. Kamala Mills fire: Yug Pathak moves sessions court for bail

Yug Pathak, the co-owner of one of the two pubs in Kamala Mills compound here where a massive fire claimed 14 lives last month, has approached the sessions court seeking bail. Last week, a magistrate's court had rejected the bail applications of the owners of the '1 Above' pub, Kripesh Sanghvi, Jigar Sanghvi and Abhijeet Mankar, and owners of the adjoining 'Mojo's Bistro', Yug Pathak and Yug Tulli. "The matter is likely to be heard on February 3," said special public prosecutor Prakash Shetty. Pathak, the son of retired director general of police and former Pune police commissioner K K Pathak, was arrested earlier this month. Crisil settles case with Sebi, pays Rs 28 lakh

Crisil today settled with markets regulator Sebi a probe into alleged violations of regulation pertaining to credit rating agency after paying over Rs 28 lakh. Sebi agreed to settle proposed adjudication proceedings in the case, pertaining to violation of the CRA (credit rating agency) norms, after it was approached by Crisil with a plea under the settlement regulations "without admitting or denying the findings of fact and conclusion of law". In a settlement order passed today, Sebi said it has disposed of the "adjudication proceedings initiated against the applicant -- Crisil Ltd". It was alleged that the "applicant, a registered credit rating agency under CRA Regulations, had violated the provisions... of the code of conduct as stipulated in ...the CRA Regulations". CJI decides to recommend removal of Justice Shukla

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra has decided to recommend the removal of Allahabad High Court judge Justice S N Shukla as part of an in-house procedure after he was found guilty of misconduct by an internal probe into a medical college admission scam. According to court sources today, the CJI is expected to write to the President and the Prime Minister soon about his recommendation that is required under the in-house procedure to remove a sitting high court judge. A three-judge in-house committee, comprising Madras High Court Chief Justice Indira Banerjee, Sikkim High Court Chief Justice S K Agnihotri and Madhya Pradesh High Court judge Justice P K Jaiswal, had concluded there was sufficient substance in the allegations contained in the complaint against Justice Shukla and that the aberrations were serious enough to call for initiation of proceedings for his removal. HC upholds Rs 3,500 cr arbitral award in favour of Daiichi

The Delhi High Court today upheld an international arbitral award of Rs 3,500 crore passed in favour of Japanese pharma major Daiichi Sankyo, which has alleged that the former promoters of India's Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd had concealed information about proceedings against them by American food and drug department. A tribunal in Singapore had passed the award in favour of Daiichi holding that the former Ranbaxy promoters and brothers, Malvinder Singh and Shivinder Singh, had concealed information that the Indian company was facing probe by the US Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Justice, while selling its shares. The high court paved the way for enforcement of the 2016 arbitral award passed by the Singapore tribunal against the Singh brothers who had sold their shares in Ranbaxy to Daiichi in 2008 for Rs 9,576.1 crore. More than 2700 kg of cannabis seized in Bihar, six arrested

Police today claimed to have seized more than 2700 kilogrammes of "ganja" (cannabis) worth over Rs one crore, in raids conducted at two different places here and arrested six persons in this connection. Raids were conducted jointly by a team of Special Task Force (STF) from Patna and the district police late yesterday night which led to recovery of 2726 kg of ganja from Bachhwara and Ballia police station areas, Superintendent of Police, Begusarai, Aditya Kumar told reporters. He said three persons - Sukesh Kumar, Anil Kumar and Vikas Kumar - were arrested in Bachhwara with 1126 kilogrammes of cannabis. A truck and three mobile phones were also seized from the spot. Both Sukesh and Vikas hailed from Maranchi police station area in Patna district while Anil belonged to Samastipur, the SP added.
