Case registered after scuffle at Kejriwal's residence: Police

The Delhi Police said today that they have registered a case following a complaint by the BJP's city unit that its leaders were attacked by AAP legislators and workers at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence. A senior police officer confirmed that an FIR has been registered, and that they were probing the matter. He said the police will procure CCTV camera footage of the incident. The case was registered based on a complaint by Delhi BJP general-secretary Ravinder Gupta with Civil Lines police station. He named AAP MLAs Jarnail Singh, Akhilesh Tripathi, Rajesh Rishi, Sanjeev Jha and Jitender Tomar in his complaint. Nobody interested about welfare of widows, neither families

The Supreme Court today castigated the Centre and states for not taking necessary steps for the welfare of widows. "Nobody is interested about the welfare of widows," a bench comprising justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta observed. There are provisions in this regard which are supposed to be implemented by the Centre and the states but no action has been taken, it rued. "Have you seen the plight of these widows? What are we supposed to do," the bench told the counsel representing the Centre. When the Centre's counsel sought some time to respond to the affidavits given by the states, the bench shot back, "That is all the Union of India does. Prays for time. Time is eternal. NIA files charge sheet in Vellamunda Maoist case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) today filed a charge sheet against three Maoist cadres for allegedly threatening a police officer at Vellamunda in Kerala in 2014 for conducting anti-Maoist operations. In the supplementary charge sheet filed before a special court in Ernakulam, the NIA charge-sheeted 34-year-old Kanya, a native of Mavinakere village in Karnataka's Chikkamangalur, and two absconders--Mahesh and Geetha--from Raichur and Dakshina Kannada districts in the state, respectively. They have been charged under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy, sedition, provisions of the Arms Act and anti-terror law, agency officials said. A supplementary report has also been filed by the NIA against an accused Roopesh, they said. "The case was originally registered at Vellamunda Police Station in Wayanad district of Kerala against CPI (Maoist) activists Roopesh, Anu, Jayanna, Kanya and Sundari. Pregnant woman's body parts found in gunny bags in Hyderabad

Chopped body parts of an unidentified pregnant woman were found stuffed in two gunny bags near Botanical Garden area at Kondapur close to Hitech City here today, police said. The incident came to light after local residents spotted the blood-stained bags by the roadside at around 9:30 AM and alerted the police. When the police opened the bags, they found decomposed body parts of a woman aged between 25 and 30, an official said. While one bag contained the severed head and hands, another was stuffed with torso, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Madhapur Division) N Shyam Prasad Rao told PTI. "Some locals alerted the police after finding the blood- stained gunny bags lying by the road near Botanical Garden. After opening the bags, chopped body parts were found," Rao said. Close shave for 21 school students as van hits road divider

As many as 21 children had a narrow escape when their school van hit a road divider this morning after the driver lost control over the vehicle in outer Delhi's Mongolpuri, the police said. The children were students of a government school. The driver was arrested following the incident. It is suspected that he was driving the van at a high speed which led to him losing control over the vehicle, the police said. The vehicle was carrying the children to school when it hit the divider. The van's two tyres got stuck in the divider, they said, adding the passersby rushed to the vehicle nabbed the driver and handed him over to police. The children who sustained minor injuries were taken to a nearby hospital and were discharged after first-aid. The arrested driver was later granted bail, the police said.

A 23-year-old B-Tech graduate woman was found dead at her residence in Hyderabad on Tuesday.The deceased has been identified as Anusha.Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Rachakonda MV Rao, told the media, "We received a information that a woman was found murdered in her residence, immediately Hayatnagar police reached the spot and found 23 year old B-Tech graduate Anusha found dead in her residence."According to police, Anusha died after receiving severe injury on her head.Anusha's brother Srikanth is suspicious on her fiance Motilal.A case has been registered under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Jiah Khan death: Charges framed against Sooraj Pancholi

A Mumbai session court on Tuesday framed charges against actor Sooraj Pancholi under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) in connection with actress Jiah Khan suicide case.Jiah was found hanging in her room on June 3, 2013 at her Mumbai residence by her mother Rabiya.The actress left behind a suicide note blaming Sooraj for the extreme step.In October 2013, Jiah's mother had moved the Bombay High Court and sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe in the case while alleging that her daughter had been murdered.Following the Bombay High Court's orders, the CBI took over the probe from the Maharashtra Police in July 2014.Earlier, Jiah's mother sought a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe which was rejected by the Bombay High Court.She then approached the Supreme Court which refused to intervene in High Court's order.

Pansare case: Main accused Tawde gets bail

A sessions court here today granted bail to Hindutva leader Virendra Tawde, the main accused in the 2015 killing of Communist leader Govind Pansare. Sessions Court Judge S D Bile granted relief to Tawde as the prosecution failed to submit sufficient evidence against him. The court asked Tawde to submit a personal surety of Rs 25,000. He was also directed to surrender his passport and not leave Maharashtra. However, Tawde, currently lodged at the Yerwada Prison near Pune, will remain behind bars as he is also an accused in the 2013 killing of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in Pune. Tawde is the leader of the Hindu Janjagriti Samiti, believed to be an offshoot of right-wing group Sanatan Sanstha. He was first arrested by the CBI in 2016 in connection with the Dabholkar killing case and was later arraigned as an accused in the Pansare case by the Maharashtra CID (Crime Investigation Department). Sealing: Maken seeks meeting with monitoring panel, says will

Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken today sought an appointment with the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee to present his legal stand for halting the sealing drive against illegal commercial establishments, asserting that he may approach the apex court if needed be. Maken also asked the AAP and the BJP to end their "fake fight" over the ongoing drive and suggested that they instead seek relief from the court for the traders hit by the move. Court gives nod to withdrawal of 1996 case against Togadia, 38

A city court today accepted a Gujarat government application seeking withdrawal of a 1996 attempt to murder case against 39 accused, including BJP leaders and senior VHP functionary Pravin Togadia. The case related to the attack on then BJP minister Atmaram Patel, who was considered close to former chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela. The application under CrPC section 321 (withdrawal from prosecution) was moved way back in 1998 by the then BJP government led by Keshubhai Patel. The plea was moved nearly two years after an FIR was lodged against them for attempt to murder and other charges. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate J M Barot today accepted the application after which the 22-year-old case stood withdrawn. SC, HC judges to get nearly 200% salary hike

The Central government has notified a hike in the salary of Supreme Court and High Court judges.The salary of Chief Justice of India (CJI) has been increased to Rs 2.8 lakhs per month from the present Rs 1 lakh, which excluded dearness and other allowances.The judges of the Supreme Court and Chief Justices of the High Courts will get a monthly salary of Rs 2.50 lakh, up from the current Rs 90,000.The judges of the High Courts will draw a monthly salary of Rs 2.25 lakh, up from the current Rs 80,000.The salary hike will come into force retrospectively from January 1, 2016.

Have enough evidence to file petition, says CBI on Bofors case

CBI officials today told a parliamentary panel looking into the Bofors deal that they have enough evidence to file a special leave petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court in a case pertaining to the defence deal. CBI's submission came even as Attorney General K K Venugopal had advised the government that the investigating agency should not file a SLP in a case related to the Bofors gun payoff as it is likely to be dismissed. The bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra is scheduled to hear a case on February 2, on the plea filed by BJP leader Ajay Aggarwal. Disclosure lapses: Sebi settles cases with 3 entities

Markets regulator Sebi has settled cases with three entities related to alleged disclosure lapses after they paid over Rs 15 lakh towards settlement charges. According to three separate Sebi orders, Aeonian Investments Company has paid Rs 9.94 lakh, while Bhavesh T Bhanushali and ABC Holding have dished out Rs 3.74 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively. Aeonian had made delayed disclosures with regard to shareholding in the matter of Sunshield Chemicals and violated PIT (Prohibition of Insider Trading) Regulations. Bhanushali and ABC had not complied with disclosure norms as required under SAST (Substantial Acquisition of Shares and Takeovers). Bhanushali's violation pertains to the matter of Women's Next Loungeries while that of ABC refers to SEBC Sugar matter. Catch the arsonists torching lawyers' cars: HC to police

The Delhi High Court today asked the police to resolve and act against those involved in the recent arson attacks on the properties of lawyers in the national capital. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar directed the police to find out the culprits involved in setting fire to the vehicles of some senior lawyers, including Kirti Uppal, the president of Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA). 8-month-old rape victim undergoes surgery, stable

An eight-month-old baby, who was raped by her cousin, underwent a three-hour-long surgery and is stable now, police said here. Delhi Commission For Women chief Swati Maliwal visited the girl at Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital yesterday. In a series of tweets today, Maliwal expressed her anguish over the incident, saying the "DCW has been raped". She also announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the baby. Maharashtra' former minister and senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal and his nephew Sameer Bhujbal have moved the Bombay High Court against a special court's order rejecting their bail pleas in a money laundering case. Building collapse: Officials ignored illegal constructions,

A prosecution witness in the 2013 Shil-Daighar building collapse today told a local court that civic officials had turned a blind eye towards rampant illegal constructions in the Lucky Compound premises. Seventy four people were killed and over 60 injured in the Shil-Daighar building collapse in April, 2013.
