A Delhi court has awarded two persons a rigorous jail term of 10 years for possessing 126 kgs of 'ganja', a contraband substance. Special NDPS Judge Rajesh Kumar Singh also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on each of the convicts while holding them guilty of the offence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The court, while awarding the minimum jail term to convicts PramodKumarPadhan, 26, andPrashantKumarPadhan, 30, took a lenient view considering they were first time offenders and deserved a chance to reform. "Considering their age and family background, they deserve an opportunity toreformthemselves andtherefore, Iam inclinedtoawardthemtheminimumsentenceunder the NPDS Act," the judge said. According to the prosecution, both the men were arrested in 2013 after the police conducted a raid on receiving a tip off that they were engaged in procuring and supplying the substance. Three men from Uzbekistan have been arrested by customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold worth Rs 33 lakh at the international airport here. The trio were intercepted upon their arrival from Dubai on Saturday. "A detailed personal and baggage search of the three passengers resulted in the recovery of five pieces of gold, weighing 1.17 kg, ingeniously concealed near the front wheel of the baggage trolley carried by them," a press release issued by the customs said today. The value of the seized gold is about Rs 33.08 lakh, it said, adding the three people have been arrested.
Police have arrested one person and seized two vehicles for stocking of illegal liquor here in the district. According to Superintendent of Police, Somen Verma, police yesterday arrested one person and seized illegal liquor from a school here, waiting to be transported to the neighbouring state Bihar. "Police raided a private school, where the liquor was stock for transportation to Bihar. One person has been arrested, while two four-wheelers have been seized," he said. Two youths died after they tried to click selfies atop a 150-feet deep water tank here, police said today. The incident that took place yesterday in Sainik Vihar area of the district saw two students, both in their 20s, slipping into the water tank in their attempt to click selfie over it, they said. According to the Station House Officer Pankaj Kumar, the deceased, identified as Shosit Singh and Rishabh Sharma, were rushed to hospital where they were declared dead. A British woman employed at the UK embassy in Lebanon has been found murdered, a senior official said today, adding that the crime did not appear to be political. "Our first impression is that it's not politically motivated," the official, who is involved in the investigation, told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. A man, accused of raping an eight-year-old girl, today was allegedly thrashed and paraded by locals with a garland of shoes around his neck in Uttar Pradesh's Deoband, the police said. Four people were also arrested for assaulting the accused and making him wear the garland, they said. The incident took place on December 7, when she went to attend her uncle's marriage. Ravi, a resident of Hasimpura village, who was also at the function, raped her there, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Vidyasagar Mishra said. A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three men in a park in northwest Delhi's Shalimar Bagh yesterday, when the country was marking the fifth anniversary of the "Nirbhaya" gang-rape. The girl, who works as a domestic help, was sitting in a park near Haiderpur slums with a male friend, when the three men came and picked up a fight with him, they said. She was raped after she tried to stop the accused from beating her friend. They also threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident, the police said. Hardline Hurriyat Conference today termed the Enforcement Directorate's notice to its chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani as "biased and unrealistic". The ED had served the notice on December 13 to Geelani to appear before it on Monday for adjudication proceedings related to a foreign exchange violation case involving USD 10,000 "illegally" possessed by him in 2002. "The notice to Geelani is biased and unrealistic. Indian authorities have crossed all democratic, constitutional and moral limits," the Hurriyat Conference said in a statement here. During the 2002 Income Tax (I-T) raids at Geelani's residences and those of his close relatives, no currency or any objectionable material was recovered, he claimed, adding that this was also conveyed to the authorities concerned through his counsel. A 32-year-old bar waitress from Bhiwandi was arrested for allegedly forcing her minor daughter into flesh trade, police said today. The woman was apprehended last evening and Rs one lakh cash was seized from her, said Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Daundkar of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell. Following a tip-off, sleuths of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell laid a trap at a mall here and nabbed the woman and rescued her 13-year-old daughter, added Daundkar. The woman, who migrated from Bihar, was living in Bhiwandi since the past four months. She needed money to complete education of her another daughter and hence forced the victim into flesh trade, the officer added. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today asked the Kupwara administration to speed up its probe into the death of a civilian in an exchange of fire between Army personnel and terrorists in the district. Expressing grief over the death of Asif Iqbal Bhat, a driver by profession, Mufti asked the district administration to find out the circumstances in which the Thandipora resident was killed. She also expressed sympathies with his family. Bhat was injured in the firing last night. He was taken to Kralpora sub-district hospital, from where he was referred to a hospital in Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries. The Jammu and Kashmir government ordered a magisterial inquiry into the killing of a civilian during an exchange of fire between Army personnel and militants in the Kupwara district today. "We have ordered an inquiry into the incident and additional district magistrate (assistant commissioner, revenue) Mohammad Abdullah Malik, has been appointed as the head of the inquiry committee, Deputy Commissioner, Kupwara, Khalid Jehangir, told PTI. Authorities have recaptured an American citizen who escaped from an overcrowded and understaffed prison on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, police said today. Christian Beasley, 32, is believed to have escaped during heavy rain last Monday from the Kerobokan penitentiary in Bali's provincial capital, Denpasar, by sawing through a ceiling and then climbing over a 6-meter (20-foot) -high wall behind the prison. The head of the prison, Tonny Nainggolan, said earlier that another American inmate, Paul Anthony Hoffman, 57, who has been serving a 20-month sentence since July for robbery, was captured while trying to escape along with Beasley. A 21-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband for dowry in Bundi district's Bhopatpura village, the police said. The husband, Bharatraj Kushwaha, along with his family members were going to cremate the body. However, the woman's parents reached their house this afternoon and informed the police, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Keshoraipatan Circle, Shiv Lal Bairwa said. A hunt was on for a government school teacher for allegedly abducting and raping a 16-year-old girl for three days in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, the police said today. On December 3, the girl had gone to attend a marriage ceremony at a village in the Paddar area of the district, from where she was allegedly abducted by the accused, Surinder Kumar Sharma, a police officer said. The accused allegedly raped the girl multiple times, before setting her free on December 6, he added. The girl, a Class 10 student, earlier studied in the school where the accused taught, the officer said. The police today recovered the body of a 24-year-old man, who was missing for the past two days, from a canal in the Sakatpura area here. Mayank Sharma, a resident of Jungalat Gate, went missing on Friday night following which his family members lodged a complaint at the Kunhari police station, Sub-Inspector Yogesh Sharma said. It seems to be a case of suicide. The matter is being investigated, he said, adding that the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem. Sharma used to work as a computer data operator at a city-based coaching institute, the officer said.
The Kairana police today claimed to have unearthed an illegal arms manufacturing factory and seized 14 pistols and a large number of cartridges during raids at Dabhedi village in Shamli district. A local court has convicted a 28-year-old man for outraging the modesty of a minor girl in 2010, but did not send him to jail and only imposed a fine. First Class Judicial Magistrate R T Ingle, in his order yesterday, said he was not in favour of sending the convict, Mandar Jagtap, to jail considering his age when the incident took place. The judge, however, slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict and said the amount should be transferred to the account of the District Legal Aid Services. Jagtap had committed the crime when he was 21. "At the time of the incident, the accused was 21 years of age. Usually, such mistakes happen in the said age. The trial has run into seven years which was a constant burden on the accused and a punishment in itself," the judge said. "If I send the convict in jail, he may become a hardened criminal.
