A 21-year-old woman from Madhya Pradesh has said her husband gave her triple talaq over the WhatsApp messaging service for not getting an autorickshaw in dowry. Asenior police officer said they received a complaint from the woman during the weekly public hearing on Tuesday. The woman, Afreen Bi, a resident of Sirpur Kankad area of Indore, told PTI Wednesday that she will fight a legal battle against this "injustice". A bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and Prateek Jalan asked the deputy commissioner of police (north-east) to give a status report indicating what measures were taken by the Delhi Police after it received a complaint from the woman's father, alleging that his daughter was being harassed over dowry and he had had no contact with her since January 19. The Bombay High Court Wednesday stayed a 2017 order of a special court that permitted the use of photocopied statements of witnesses and confessions of accused as secondary evidence in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. In an interim order, a bench of justices A S Oka and A S Gadkari said the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court should not have passed the order and it was bad in law. The bench also noted that it was the duty of the NIA, the prosecuting agency in the case, to point out the mistake to the court in permitting the use of unverified photocopies as secondary evidence. The bench was hearing an appeal filed by Sameer Kulkarni, a co-accused in the case, challenging the 2017 order of the special court that permitted the use of photocopies of statements of witnesses and confessions of accused, as secondary evidence in the case. The Bombay High Court Wednesday directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to file an affidavit explaining the reasons for the inaction over rampant noise norms violations in the city. A bench of Justices A S Oka and A S Gadkari also directed the commissioner to explain in the affidavit the action that he proposes to take against those officers, who failed to act against the violators in the past, despite an existing HC order mandating that prompt action be taken against such people. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Awaaz Foundation about the violation of noise rules. The police had filed two affidavits in compliance with a previous HC order over noise violations at Girgaum Chowpatty during the immersion of Ganesh idols in September last year, and in Khar during Eid celebrations in November last year. Assam government Wednesday informed the state Assembly that over 2.9 lakh cases are pending in lower courts across the state and it is mulling to set up 33 fast track courts to try heinous crimes. Giving a written reply to a query by AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam, Law and Justice Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya said the number of pending cases in lower courts have gone up from 2,76,520 in 2017 to 2,91,960 the next year. A total of 3,26,931 new cases were registered last year and 3,11,150 cases were disposed of, he said. "The government is considering to set up 33 fast track courts to handle cases of rape as well as murder of women and children," Bhattacharya said. He also informed the Assembly that a total of 70 posts of judges in various lower courts are lying vacant at this moment. Bhattacharya said, out of the sanctioned posts of 24 judges in the high court, four are vacant.
Two persons, evading arrest for several years, were Wednesday held in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, the police said. Maneer Hussain was involved in a case of criminal breach of trust by a public servant in 2014 and was arrested in a raid, they said. He was evading his arrest since 2014, they added. Congress MLA J N Ganesh was arrested on Wednesday, weeks after he was declared absconding for allegedly assaulting another lawmaker from his party during a brawl at a resort. Ganesh was at large after the alleged assault on Anand Singh, both from Ballari district, on January 20 at the Eagleton Resort on the city outskirts, where the Congress had sequestered its MLAs to prevent a poaching bid by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). An arbitral tribunal has passed an award amounting to over Rs 2,000 crore in favour of Jindal ITF Ltd in a case pertaining to transport of coal to Farakka thermal power plant of the state-run power producer NTPC. The final award was pronounced by a bench comprising Justice Vikramajit Sen (retired), Justice B P Singh (retired) and Justice Anil Kumar (retired). The NTPC had signed a tripartite agreement in 2011 with Inland Water Authority of India (IWAI) and Jindal ITF for transportation of coal to its 2,100-MW power plant located at Farakka, West Bengal, through inland waterways. It had assured Jindal ITF that a minimum of 3 million metric tonnes (MMT) of coal would be transported per year through the latter and that if NTPC fails to do so, it would pay Jindal ITF transportation fee for 90 per cent of 3MMT of coal. A soldier, who was injured during an encounter last week at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir, has succumbed to injuries, a defence official said Wednesday. Naik Sandeep Kumar, who was injured in an anti-militancy operation on February 12 in Pulwama, succumbed at 92 Base Hospital here on Tuesday, the official said. A local militant was killed and another soldier died in the encounter. Army paid tributes to Naik Kumar at a solemn ceremony at Badamibagh here on Wednesday. The mortal remains of the soldier were then sent to his native place in Haryana's Faridabad, where his final rites will be performed, the official said.
