The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Wednesday conducted raids on at least six locations in Mumbai and Delhi-NCR region in connection with the multi-crore IL&FS payment default crisis, officials said. They said the action by the central probe agency came after it registered a criminal complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in the alleged payment default case and searches were being conducted at the residential locations of executives linked to the Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (ILFS) including its former chairman Ravi Parthasarathy and few others. The raids are on in Mumbai and locations in Delhi and the national capital region (NCR) including Gurugram, they said. Officials added that the investigators are looking at collecting additional evidences and documents apart from what they have obtained till now as part of the probe. A Pakistani prisoner was found dead at the Jaipur Central Jail in Rajasthan on Wednesday, police said.The prisoner, identified as Shakar Ullah, died allegedly in a brawl with other inmates, said Inspector General of Police for Prisons Rupinder Singh. "He was lodged here since 2011 and died following a brawl with other inmates," the IG added.Further details are awaited.
A Pakistani national lodged in the central jail here was allegedly killed Wednesday in a brawl with other prisoners. "A Pakistani prisoner was allegedly murdered today in the central jail. The matter will be investigated by a judicial magistrate and also by the police," Rajasthan Director General of Police Kapil Garg told PTI. The killing in Jaipur prison has been reported amid heightened tension between India and Pakistan after the Pulwama terror attack. An official said Shakrullah (50), who was from Pakistan Punjab's Sialkot, was hit with a large stone during the prison fight. Inspector general (Prisons) Rupinder Singh said Shakrullah was lodged in the jail's special cell since 2011 and was serving life sentence under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Senior administration and police officials rushed to the jail after learning about the death. Singh said the post mortem will be conducted on the jail premises under judicial supervision.
The Delhi High Court asked the AAP government on Wednesday to decide within four weeks the plea for premature release of former Haryana chief minister O P Chautala, who is serving a 10-year jail term in the JBT teachers' recruitment scam. The direction by a bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and Prateek Jalan came on Chautala's petition seeking that he be released from prison in accordance with the Centre's policy for grant of special remission to prisoners. In his plea, Chautala claimed that his representation, made in December last year for premature release, was yet to be decided by the Delhi government. A dumper, laden with sand overturned while making a U-turn at high speed, crushing to death three members of a family and injuring a child, who were travelling in their Audi car, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place in Rohini near ESI Hospital on KN Katju Marg. The Katju Marg police station was informed about the accident at 1.04 am. The family was returning from an engagement ceremony. Police said the car was being driven by Sumit (29). After reaching the spot, the police team found all the four members of the family injured and immediately rushed them to a nearby hospital. Four members of a family, including two children, were charred to death in a fire triggered by explosion of a domestic LPG cylinder in Nashik district of Maharashtra, police said Wednesday. The incident occurred Tuesday night in Dhaur village in Dindori taluka, around 30 kms from here, when the family members were asleep after having dinner, a local police official said. The makeshift tin-roof structure in which the family was living suffered extensive damage in the explosion, he said. The official said four members, including a couple and two children, burned alive in fire. It seemed the cylinder was leaking and the gas came into contact with a kerosene lamp in the shed which has no power connection, the official said when asked about the likely cause behind the incident.
