The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police arrested a wanted criminal from Mahanagar area here, police said Thursday. Based on a tip-off, Amit Chauhan was arrested on Wednesday, they said. Chauhan carried a reward of Rs 17,500 on information leading to his arrest and was wanted in a number of criminal cases, including attempt to murder, and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) in Lucknow and Gonda district, the police said.

The Supreme Court Thursday pulled up the Centre for the pathetic condition prevailing in jails across the country and wondered whether prisoners were considered as humans "in the eyes of the authorities". A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur also took note of huge vacancies of around 48 per cent in forensic science laboratories (FSL) in India and asked the Centre how it would ensure speedy trial for the undertrials in such a situation. "This whole thing have been converted into a joke. Do prisoners have no rights? I do not know whether they (prisoners) are considered to be humans in the eyes of the authorities," Justice Lokur observed. "Tell your officers to go and see (condition in jails). A case was lodged regarding the fraudulent transfer of Rs 94.10 lakh from the official account of TRG Industries Private Limited with J&K Bank Town Hall branch in Jammu between June 1, 2016 and June 9, 2016, the officer said, adding that one Vikram Singh Barnala was arrested from New Delhi Thursday. Based on Barnala's disclosure, it surfaced that an international gang of fraudsters was behind the transfer of the amount, he said. A Delhi court on Thursday issued non-bailable warrants (NBW) against 12 ex-policemen of Uttar Pradesh after they failed to surrender before it to serve life term awarded to them for the killing 42 people of a minority community in Hashimpura locality of Meerut in 1987. The Delhi High Court had awarded life imprisonment to 16 ex-policemen, all of whom have retired, and had directed them to surrender on or before November 22. Additional Sessions Judge Smita Garg sent the remaining four convicts to Tihar central jail after they surrendered before the court as per October 31 directions of the High Court. The Supreme Court said Thursday it may cancel the bail granted to former Jharkhand minister Yogendra Sao and his MLA wife Nirmala Devi, accused in rioting cases in 2016, for violating conditions imposed by it. The top court asked the couple to argue on the next date of hearing as to why the bail granted to them in riot cases cannot be cancelled. Fair trade regulator CCI has dismissed a complaint alleging unfair business practices against OPPO mobiles' distributor firm for halting supply of mobile phones and non settlement of dues. Disposing of the complaint, the regulator said, "the Commission holds that no case of contravention of either Section 3 or Section 4 of the Act is made out against the Oppo Mobiles MU Pvt Ltd in the present matter." Section 3 and 4 pertain to anti-competitive agreements and abuse of dominant market position, respectively. According to CCI, Oppo Mobiles MU is a Pune-based distributor of mobiles phones and accessories under the brand name 'OPPO' in India. The ruling came on the complaint filed by K.C. A 72-year-old man was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment by a city court Thursday for molesting a minor girl who worked as a help at his residence. The retired engineer was accused of molesting the girl and peeping into the bathroom when she was taking bath at his residence in Phoolbagan area of east Kolkata. Special judge (POCSO) at Sealdah Court Jimut Bahan Biswas sentenced Tapan Bhattacharyya to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed on him a fine of Rs 20,000 for the offence. The girl had filed the complaint with the Phoolbagan police station on October 31 this year with the help of a local woman to whom she had narrated her ordeal, special public prosecutor Vivek Sharma said. The 14-year-old girl had been sent by her family to work as a help at Bhattacharyya's home owing to abject poverty, Sharma said. Bhattacharyya was charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
