SC rejects PIL seeking to stop public from airing views till decision on Ayodhya land case

The Supreme Court on Thursday summarily dismissed a PIL seeking a direction to organisations and public at large to "behave" and not air their views that can spoil the atmosphere till it decides the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case. The apex court had on October 29 fixed the Ayodhya case for the first week of January before an "appropriate bench", which will decide the schedule of hearing. A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justices K M Joseph and M R Shah refused to entertain the PIL filed by Bankim K Kulshrestha seeking a direction to the Ministry of Home Affairs that different organisations and persons be restrained from airing their views, which can spoil the atmosphere, till the apex court decides the case. 'Is parallel system running in jails': SC frowns over special treatment to Chandra brothers

"Is there a parallel system running in jails?," the Supreme Court asked Thursday while referring to media reports that LED TV, sofa and other prohibited items were found in a Tihar jail cell where Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra and his brother Ajay have been lodged. A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur asked the Centre as to what action has been taken in the matter. It said a report by Additional Sessions Judge, who carried out inspection in the jail on September 4 following complaints from inmates that the Chandra brothers and others were enjoying "luxurious lifestyle", was already available. "Report of a judge says that Unitech officials are enjoying facilities in Tihar. Is there a parallel system running in jails? Do they have special rights in jails? What have you done about it?," the bench, also comprising justices S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta, asked the Centre's counsel. "These persons are enjoying TV. God knows what all they are enjoying. They are sitting on sofas," the bench .

WCD Ministry links 'SHe-Box' to central, state ministries

The Ministry of Women and Child Development has linked SHe-Box -- the online portal to report complaints of Sexual Harassment at the workplace-- to all ministries, departments and 653 districts across 33 States/Union Territories.For prompt disposal of complaints on SHe-Box, each case goes directly to the central/ state authority concerned having jurisdiction to take action in the matter. Cases on She-Box can be monitored by the complainants and WCD Ministry, reducing the time taken in case disposal.Till November 20, 2018, as many as 321 complaints have been registered with 'SHe-Box' out of which 120 are related to central ministries and departments, 58 are from state governments and 143 are from private companies.Elaborating on the portal, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi said, "SHe-Box portal is an effort to provide a speedy remedy to women facing sexual harassment at workplace. Jammu Police arrests one with arms and ammunition

One person was arrested for allegedly carrying arms and ammunition in Gandhi Nagar area here, police said Thursday. The accused, with several cases of attempt to murder and extortion registered against him, was nabbed when he was planning a killing, police said. A police party intercepted a bike in Gandhi Nagar and recovered one country made revolver and two cartridges from the accused, they said. A case has been registered and investigation is on, they added. In a similar incident, police on Wednesday had arrested two gangsters from Shastri Nagar with arms and ammunition. Court remands Manju Verma to one-day police custody

Bihar's former social welfare minister Manju Verma was remanded to one-day police custody by a court here in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Majhaul Sub-Division, Prabhat Trivedi, passed the order on an application by the district police which had sought two-day custody. Verma had been evading arrest in an Arms Act case lodged in the course of investigations in the scandal. She had surrendered before a local court Tuesday. The former minister and her husband Chandrashekhar Verma have been named in the case lodged at Cheria Bariarpur police station in August after a huge quantity of ammunition was found inside their residence by a CBI team which raided the premises in connection with the scandal. SC spares BJP MP Manoj Tiwari from contempt but rebukes him for being 'a rebel without a cause'

In a relief to Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, the Supreme Court on Thursday spared him off a punitive action in a contempt case but rebuked him for his "misplaced bravado" and being "a rebel without a cause" for breaking lock of a sealed building. The court also expressed "extreme pain" over Tiwari's action and observed that the "misplaced bravado" and "chest thumping" by him in making frivolous allegations against the court-mandated monitoring committee on sealing was a clear indication of how "low he can stoop" and also displayed his "total lack of respect for any rule of law". Upset over boyfriend's death woman commits suicide in TN

A 21-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in her house here as she was upset over the death of her boyfriend, who was found murdered near the Tamirabarani river in the district, police said Thursday. The woman Sathyabama and her lover Isakki Shankar(33) who belonged todifferent communities were in love for the past three years and had decided to get married despite strong opposition from their families. It was against this background that the body of Shankar was found with cut injuries here on Tuesday. The district Superintendent of Police Arun Sakthikumar has ordered a probe into the death of the man. Trace absconding accused in Dabholkar, Pansare cases: HC tells probe agencies

The Bombay High Court Thursday directed the CBI and the Maharashtra Crime Investigation Department (CID) to take concrete steps to trace the absconding persons wanted in connection with the killings of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare. A bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and Bharati Dangre said since the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the CID had dedicated teams to probe the killings of Dabholkar and Pansare respectively, they must make major headway in the cases in a time-bound manner. The directions came after both the probe agencies submitted their respective progress reports in sealed covers before the bench. The CBI is handling the Dabholkar case, while the CID is probing Pansare's killing. Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, who appeared for the CBI, told the bench that the agency was waiting for a prior sanction from the state government to prosecute some persons in the case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Four live mortar cells were spotted in Teesta Canal here on Thursday. Rebel without cause: SC slams Manoj Tiwari

The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday closed contempt proceedings against Bhartiya Janata Party's (BJP) Delhi president Manoj Tiwari and reprimanded him for his action of breaking the seal of a locked house in an unauthorised colony, terming the leader as a "rebel without a cause" and "misplaced bravado".A Bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta, in its order, also said that misplaced political propaganda has no place and such practices should be deprecated. Muzaffarpur shelter rape case: Police remand for ex-minister Manju Verma

Manju Verma, the former social welfare minister of Bihar, on Thursday was sent to a one-day police remand by a Begusarai court in connection with an Arms Act case.Verma had surrendered before a Begusarai court on Tuesday.Earlier this month, a non-bailable warrant was issued against her after 50 live cartridges were seized from her residence during a raid by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case.Verma had been evading arrest in the Arms Act case. Wife of UK scholar jailed in UAE blames London

The wife of a British scholar who was sentenced to life for spying in the United Arab Emirates accused the Foreign Office on Thursday of ignoring her pleas for help. The sentencing of 31-year-old Matthew Hedges on Wednesday shocked Britain and put political pressure on Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt. Britain views the UAE as a strategic Middle East ally which it supplies with arms. Hedges's wife Daniela Tejada said upon her return from Dubai that the Foreign Office was putting its diplomatic interests above those of an innocent citizen who was placed under arbitrary arrest. 'Indo-Canadian woman loses appeal against sentence for forging degree to practice medicine in UAE'

A 38-year old Indo-Canadian woman has lost her appeal against a six-month jail term, months after being found guilty of using a fake degree to practice medicine in the UAE, according to a media report. The Court of First Instance in April convicted her of charges of practicing medicine with a licence she had wrongfully obtained and committing forgery, the Khaleej Times reported. Public prosecution records showed that she managed to have the licence to work as a dermatologist issued for her after filling in her application form with false information. The Canadian national has not been named. She used forged general medicine degree and diploma in specialisation when applying for the permit, the report said on the case which dates back to March 6, 2016.

Elgar Parishad: HC extends relief from arrest to 3 activists

The Bombay High Court Thursday extended till December 14, the interim protection from arrest to activists Gautam Navlakha, Anand Teltumbde and Stan Swamy, in the Elgar Parishad-Bhima Koregaon case. Telangana: Man hacked to death with sickle

A man was brutally murdered by unknown attackers with a sickle in Telangana's Medchal town last night.According to Medipally police, the deceased, identified as Raji Reddy, was travelling to Parvathipuram by car when a few unknown men attacked his car.The miscreants pulled Reddy out of his car and attacked him with a sickle, following which Reddy died on the spot.The police has registered a case in this matter under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the body of the deceased has been sent to a local hospital for postmortem.

Jared Kushner to reach Jaisalmer to attend wedding
