SIT vigorously pursuing anti-Sikh cases: Jaitley

A day after one convict was sentenced to death for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said Wednesday other related cases are being vigorously pursued though convictions will only be a small consolation for the families of victims. The 1984 anti-Sikh riots followed assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi leaving nearly 3,000 people dead. Terming the 'Operation Blue Star' as a "historic blunder", the minister said the period from 1984 to 1998 was one of cover-up where all cases were buried as though, the 1984 genocide had not happened. The first NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee appointed Justice G T Nanavati Commission of Enquiry and recommended action against the accused, Jaitley said in a blog. Three arrested for rape and abduction of 10-year-old

Police arrested three persons on Wednesday for the alleged rape and abduction of a ten-year-old girl in a village in Odisha's Ganjam district three weeks ago. Two motor-cycles used in the crime and some gold ornaments and other articles looted by the accused from the girl's house were also seized from the trio, Ganjam Superintendent of Police Brijesh Rai said. The accused are aged between 19 and 20 years of age and hail from the same district, he said. They had broken into the girl's house at Dhoyakana village on October 31 night to commit burglary when the family members were sleeping. After committing burglary, they had allegedly abducted the minor daughter of the house owner and one of them raped her in a nearby area, while other two assisted him, the SP said. They had also threatened the girl with a sharp weapon when she tried to cry out for help, the police said. Man killed in accident in Rajasthan

A 25-year-old man was killed Wednesday and another injured after their motorcycles collided in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, police said. The deceased, identified as Mohan Singh Rajput, a resident of Jaswantpura village, while the other motorcyclist, who was seriously injuried was identified as Rahul Meghwal of Negadiya village, they said. Both were rushed to a local hospital from where they were referred to the SRG hospital in Jhalawar, where Rajput was declared brought dead, police said, adding that Meghwal is undergoing treatment. The body was handed over to the family after postmortem Wednesday afternoon, police said. A case under Section 279 (negligent driving) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registerd against the injured man, they said.

12-year-old dies after temple's gate falls on him

A 12-year-old boy died after an iron gate of a temple apparently fell on him while he was playing near it in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, police said Wednesday. The incident happened in Banjari village on Tuesday morning. Harish Dangi was rushed to a hospital, but was declared brought dead, the police said. In another case of accidental death, a 20-year-old woman died after apparently falling into a well in Titarwasa village on Tuesday evening, a police officer said. The incident happened when Puja Dhakad, a resident of Banda village, was working in an agricultural field, the officer said. The body was recovered after some passers-by noticed it floating in the well, the officer said. A case has been registered in both the cases under various sections of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC ), the officer said, adding that the bodies had handed over to the families after post-mortem.

AAP disapproves of Bharti's behaviour: Party spokesperson

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) disapproved of its MLA Somnath Bharti's alleged behaviour towards a woman journalist after he was booked Wednesday on charges of hurling abuses at her. "Somnath Bharti should not have talked the way he did on television," AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said. An FIR against the AAP MLA was lodged on the complaint of the woman journalist of a private TV news channel, who accused him of calling her names and asking her to "become a prostitute". Denying the allegations, Bharti, however, threatened to file a defamation case against both the news channel and its anchor. He said he had joined the TV show over phone to discuss the attack on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday, but the video was being presented with manipulation. "I will file a defamation case against both the news anchor as well as the channel," Bharti told PTI.

Sabarimala row: CPI(M) accuses BJP-RSS of sending activists to 'fuel tension'

The CPI (M) Wednesday attacked the BJP and the RSS over the ongoing protests in Sabarimala against the entry of women of all ages into the Lord Ayyappa temple there, accusing them of sending their activists to the site to "fuel tensions". In a statement , the party's politburo alleged that the aim of the BJP-RSS activists is to "take control of the temple's premises and to create a law and order problem there". The CPI(M) alleged that the BJP's Kannur district committee had issued a circular on November 14, asking 200 "trained" volunteers from four areas of the district to gather at the Sabarimala temple on December 13. "It also instructed these volunteers to carry necessary materials in their handbags," the Left party alleged and said it was a serious matter.

Ex-Pondy minister's relatives found murdered

An elderly couple was found murdered at their residential colony here, the police said Wednesday. Police said while Balakrishnan (72) was found strangled, his 65-year-old wife, Hemalatha, was suffocated to death using a pillow, they said. Police said Balakrishnan was a close relative of former Local Administration Minister C Jayakumar whose daughter had married the former's son. According to police, the deceased are French nationals of Puducherry origin and their children were away in France. The neighbours became suspicious when they found that Hemalatha had not come out of the house this morning. They informed Jayakumar who rushed to the spot and found their bodies in their bedroom. Chief Minister V Narayanasamy visited the spot and directed police to expedite the investigation. The almirah in the bedroom was found ransacked, police said. Delhi MLA Somnath Bharti was booked Wednesday on charges of hurling abuses at a woman journalist, a police official said. The FIR against the AAP MLA was lodged on the complaint of the woman journalist of a private TV news channel, who accused him of calling her names and asking her to "become a prostitute". Jammu police arrests two gangsters with arms, foils gang-war

Two gangsters were arrested with arms and ammunition from Shastri Nagar area here, police said Wednesday The accused, with dozen of criminal cases already registered against them, were nabbed when they were planning to attack a rival gang, police said. SC to review death penalty awarded to man killing his family

Shakti Mills gang-rape: Bombay HC to begin final hearing in Jan

The Bombay High Court Wednesday fixed January 14 for a detailed hearing on petitions filed by three persons on death row for raping a photojournalist at Shakti Mills compound here in 2013. The decision was taken by a bench of Justices B P Dharmadhikari and Sarang Kotwal following the mutual consent of the state government and the trio's counsels. Three of the five accused who were convicted by the sessions court in the city in 2014 -- Vijay Jadhav, Kasim Bengali and Salim Ansari -- had moved the high court after they were sentenced to death for being repeat offenders. The court had also found them guilty for raping another woman on Shakti Mills' premises earlier. The fourth accused, Siraj Khan, was sentenced to life imprisonment and the fifth, a minor, was sent to a correctional facility. 2 cops arrested for smuggling heroin in Jammu

Two police personnel were arrested here for allegedly smuggling 14 grams of heroin, police said Wednesday. A police team intercepted two pedestrians at Karan Bagh area, following which the narcotic was recovered from the duo, the police said. BJP leader K Surendran, 71 others granted bail

A court here Wednesday granted conditional bail to 72 people, including BJP general secretary K Surendran, who were arrested in connection with the Sabarimala temple row. Surendran along with two others had been arrested on November 18 from Nilackal as he tried to proceed to the Lord Ayyappa Temple despite being advised by police personnel against visiting Sabarimala due to law and order issues. The 69 others were arrested after they held a "nama japam" (chanting Lord Ayyappa mantras) inside the shrine complex late on Sunday, defying prohibitory orders. When their case up before the Munsif court here, all the 73 people were granted bail with strict conditions. 2264 women reported missing in Maha during 2013-18

As many as 2264 women are reported missing in Maharashtra in the last five years, the state Legislative Assembly has been told. In a written reply, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds Home portfolio, said the missing women include 298 minor girls. A question was submitted by ruling Bhartiya Janata Party's (BJP's) Mangal Prabhat Lodha and others. The CM said the number of missing women looks increased because, as per a Supreme Court directive, a kidnapping case has to be registered in case of the minor children having gone missing. Since 2013, 5056 women below 18 years were reported missing/kidnapped. Out of this, 4758 women were found, he said. A total of 21652 women above 18 years were reported missing during the same period, the CM said, adding that 19,686 of them were found. Apex consumer court asks Tata Motors, its dealer to pay compensation

Automobile major Tata Motors Ltd and a Chhattisgarh-based dealer of the company have been directed by the apex consumer commission to pay over Rs 41,000 to a customer for refusing to repair a vehicle which was under warranty. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) said that as per practice, the dealer repairs the vehicle under warranty but the manufacturer was also "equally responsible" for it. The NCDRC, while modifying the state commission's order which had exonerated Tata Motors from paying any compensation, asked the manufacturer and its dealer to pay Rs 41,568 jointly and severally to Chhattisgarh-resident Neeraj Tiwari within a month. "I agree with the point raised by the petitioners (dealer) that the warranty has been issued by the Tata Motors and they are responsible for allowing repairs under the warranty," NCDRC's presiding member Prem Narain said in his order. Sealing: SC to pronounce order on contempt proceedings against BJP MP Manoj Tiwari

The Supreme Court is scheduled to pronounce Thursday its order on contempt proceedings against Delhi BJP chief and Lok Sabha MP Manoj Tiwari for allegedly breaking the seal of a premises here. The property was sealed by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC).
