The Bombay High Court on Wednesday extended the relief by a day from arrest granted to civil rights activist Gautam Navlakha, professor Anand Teltumbde and priest Stan Swamy in a case against them over the Koregaon-Bhima violence and alleged links with Maoists. A bench of Justices B P Dharamadhikari and Sarang Kotwal will hear on Thursday the petitions filed by the three activists, challenging the FIR registered against them by Pune Police on January 1 in connection with the Elgar Parishad event held on December 31, 2017. The police had alleged that Maoists supported the Elgar Parishad conclave in Pune, which led to the violence. At the event, held a day before the January 1 caste clashes at Koregaon Bhima village near Pune, the activists had made inflammatory speeches and provocative statements that contributed to the Koregaon Bhima violence, police said. A man was killed and six of his family members injured when a car carrying them hit a stationary truck in Odisha's Balasore district on Wednesday, a police officer said. All seven of them, residents of Liluah in West Bengal, were on their way home after a short visit to Raipur in Chhattisgarh and the temple town of Puri in Odisha, he said. Around 5 am, their vehicle rammed into the truck, parked along National Highway 60, near Haldipada in the district, the officer said. While one person died on the spot, six injured were taken to a district headquarters hospital here, he said, adding that the deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Neera Bora.

A 28-year-old woman from Chandrapur in Maharashtra allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a lake along with her five-year-old son whom she tied to her chest with her dupatta (stole) before taking the plunge, police said Wednesday. Prima facie, the woman, identified as Rupali Gujjewar, took the extreme step on November 19 over fear that she might not do well in her B.Com examination and consequently not be able to secure a good job, a police official said. Tokyo prosecutors have won permission from a district court to extend the detention of Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn for a further 10 days, several media reported on Wednesday. The Madras High Court has acquitted a man, who was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a lower court in a case of sexual assault in Tiruvannamalai district in 2007, terming the police probe as "faulty". The court also directed the Tamil Nadu DGP to peruse the judgement given by the trial court and the high court and arrange for training classes to all investigation officers to sensitise them to the manner in which a probe should be conducted in a case of sexual offence. Allowing the appeal by the accused V Venkatesan Tuesday, Justice MV Muralidharan said, "It is seen from records that the investigation conducted by an inspector of police is the root cause for the collapse of the case of the prosecution." Two persons have been arrested for allegedly duping people through a fake logistics company, police said Wednesday. The accused, identified as Rajesh alias Nihal Singh and Rajkumar, had also fraudulently got their company listed on online search portal JustDial, they said. The two were arrested on Tuesday, days after a software engineer, who recently relocated to Pune from Noida, approached the police alleging fraud and blackmail by Rose Packers and Movers. "The complainant was told by the packers and movers that his household items worth over Rs 10 lakh would be delivered in Pune on October 28, four days after the pick up. But even after 20 days, they did not deliver it," a police official said. A special POCSO court here has sentenced a 26-year-old man to seven years in prison for abducting and raping a 15-year-old girl in 2014. In the judgement pronounced on Tuesday, Additional District Judge Ram Sudh Singh found Virender Kumar guilty of offences under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court also slapped Kumar with a fine of Rs 30,000 and ordered that half the amount will go to the victim. On July 7, 2014, Kumar had abducted the victim from her house in Basayet village, when her parents were away, and raped her, prosecution lawyer Pushpender Malik said.
A 22-year-old man sustained serious injuries as he was allegedly attacked by a group of men at his residence in Jolly village here over a money dispute, police said on Wednesday. Israr Ansari was rushed to a hospital after the attack on Tuesday, they said. Circle Officer Ram Mohan Sharma said a case has been registered against five persons. The accused are absconding and a manhunt has been launched to nab them. A total of 325 inmates lodged in the overcrowded district jail here, including lifers and long-term inmates, will be shifted to a prison in Noida, an official said on Wednesday. The district authorities recommended this to reduce the burden on the prison, Jail Superintendent A K Saxena said. Over 2,000 inmates from two districts -- Muzaffarnagar and Shamli -- are lodged in the prison here against the capacity of 870, he said. Saxena said a confirmation from the jail department headquarters in Lucknow is awaited.
A man accused of killing his mother last year in a New Hampshire hospital intensive care unit has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Fifty-year-old Travis Frink appeared in Grafton County Superior Court on Tuesday. A judge accepted his plea and committed him to the state prison's secure psychiatric unit for up to five years. Frink initially pleaded not guilty to shooting 70-year-old Pamela Ferriere multiple times. Lawyers considering an insanity defense wrote in court documents Frink told police he was taken from the womb and subjected to a "sadistic scientific experiment." Frink also told police he had not taken medication nor slept in a long time before the September 2017 shooting at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. Frink has been hospitalized in the past and diagnosed with bipolar and schizoaffective disorder.
A 27-year-old man, who was recently acquitted by the Himachal Pradesh High Court in an alleged rape case, has released a monthly magazine named 'Competition Companion' for those preparing for competitive examinations.Vikram Singh Khimta, a resident of Mandhol village in Shimla district served two years in jail in an alleged rape case. Khimta said that the case against him was fabricated."I was hopeful for justice from the Indian judicial system. On November 3, I was acquitted by the High Court of Himachal Pradesh. I was punished by session court under certain circumstances on September 30, 2016, for a crime which I never did.
