HC extends relief from arrest to activist Navlakha, others till Thursday
The Bombay High Court on Wednesday extended the relief by a day from arrest granted to civil rights activist Gautam Navlakha, professor Anand Teltumbde and priest Stan Swamy in a case against them over the Koregaon-Bhima violence and alleged links with Maoists. A bench of Justices B P Dharamadhikari and Sarang Kotwal will hear on Thursday the petitions filed by the three activists, challenging the FIR registered against them by Pune Police on January 1 in connection with the Elgar Parishad event held on December 31, 2017. The police had alleged that Maoists supported the Elgar Parishad conclave in Pune, which led to the violence. At the event, held a day before the January 1 caste clashes at Koregaon Bhima village near Pune, the activists had made inflammatory speeches and provocative statements that contributed to the Koregaon Bhima violence, police said. One killed, six injured as car hits truck in Odisha
A man was killed and six of his family members injured when a car carrying them hit a stationary truck in Odisha's Balasore district on Wednesday, a police officer said. All seven of them, residents of Liluah in West Bengal, were on their way home after a short visit to Raipur in Chhattisgarh and the temple town of Puri in Odisha, he said. Around 5 am, their vehicle rammed into the truck, parked along National Highway 60, near Haldipada in the district, the officer said. While one person died on the spot, six injured were taken to a district headquarters hospital here, he said, adding that the deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Neera Bora.
Amritsar AAP leader stable, police to examine CCTV footage
Former Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) district unit president Suresh Sharma, who was shot at here on Tuesday, is stable now. Police will examine the close circuit television (CCTV) footage in a bid to identify the assailant.Superintendent of Police J S Walia on Wednesday said, "Former AAP's district unit president and RTI activist Suresh Sharma, who was shot at here on Tuesday, is stable now. We will examine the CCTV footage. Further investigation is underway."Sharma was shot at by an unidentified assailant here on Tuesday evening. He was immediately rushed to a hospital with serious injuries, where he is undergoing treatment. According to police, the unidentified assailant, who reportedly came to Sharma's furniture shop at around 6.30 pm on Tuesday, shot him thrice from close range and fled from the spot.
Fearing failure in exams, woman kills self with her son
A 28-year-old woman from Chandrapur in Maharashtra allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a lake along with her five-year-old son whom she tied to her chest with her dupatta (stole) before taking the plunge, police said Wednesday. Prima facie, the woman, identified as Rupali Gujjewar, took the extreme step on November 19 over fear that she might not do well in her B.Com examination and consequently not be able to secure a good job, a police official said. The incident came to light this morning when bodies of Rupali and her son Abhir were found floating in the Ramala lake in Ramnagar locality of Chandrapur in east Maharashtra, around 870 km from here. FIR registered against Alok Nath, confirms Vinita Nanda's lawyer
Writer-producer Vinta Nanda's lawyer Dhruti Kapadia has confirmed that the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against actor Alok Nath who allegedly raped her.Nanda had lodged a complaint in October against the actor who allegedly raped and sexually harassed her in 1990s. Gunmen kidnap Italian woman in southeast Kenya: Police
An armed gang abducted an Italian volunteer from a village in southeast Kenya, shooting and wounding five residents in the raid, police said Wednesday. "The attackers fired indiscriminately at residents" before kidnapping the Italian volunteer during the attack after dark on Tuesday evening at Chakama, a small village in the coastal Kilifi county, police said in a statement.
Ghosn's detention extended for 10 days: Media
Tokyo prosecutors have won permission from a district court to extend the detention of Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn for a further 10 days, several media reported on Wednesday. Prosecutors had 48 hours after his arrest to either press formal charges, release him or request this 10-day custody extension to continue questioning. Contacted by AFP, both the court and the prosecutor declined to confirm the reports. In a stunning fall from grace for the once-loved tycoon, Ghosn was arrested after arriving in Tokyo on his private jet on Monday. His firm Nissan accused him of under-reporting his salary over a period of several years and "numerous significant acts of misconduct." Public broadcaster NHK reported that Nissan had paid "huge sums" to provide Ghosn with luxury homes in Rio de Janeiro, Beirut, Paris and Amsterdam "without any legitimate business reason.
Madras HC acquits man in sexual assault case, faults police probe
The Madras High Court has acquitted a man, who was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a lower court in a case of sexual assault in Tiruvannamalai district in 2007, terming the police probe as "faulty". The court also directed the Tamil Nadu DGP to peruse the judgement given by the trial court and the high court and arrange for training classes to all investigation officers to sensitise them to the manner in which a probe should be conducted in a case of sexual offence. Allowing the appeal by the accused V Venkatesan Tuesday, Justice MV Muralidharan said, "It is seen from records that the investigation conducted by an inspector of police is the root cause for the collapse of the case of the prosecution." In the case on hand, the judge said the investigating officer, without taking due care, conducted the probe in a casual manner and was not aware of the manner to investigate into the offence. A former cartel operative told the US trial of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Tuesday that he bribed a former Mexican cabinet minister with millions of dollars stuffed into two suitcases and hand delivered in a restaurant. Jesus Zambada, a government informant held in US custody since 2008, said the bribes were delivered in person to Genaro Garcia Luna, Mexico's former public security minister, in 2005-2006. Zambada said the Sinaloa cartel also bribed Gabriel Regino, at the time a senior police official under Mexico's now president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador when the latter was mayor of Mexico City. 2 held for running fake logistics firm, duping people in Noida
Two persons have been arrested for allegedly duping people through a fake logistics company, police said Wednesday. The accused, identified as Rajesh alias Nihal Singh and Rajkumar, had also fraudulently got their company listed on online search portal JustDial, they said. The two were arrested on Tuesday, days after a software engineer, who recently relocated to Pune from Noida, approached the police alleging fraud and blackmail by Rose Packers and Movers. "The complainant was told by the packers and movers that his household items worth over Rs 10 lakh would be delivered in Pune on October 28, four days after the pick up. But even after 20 days, they did not deliver it," a police official said. The complainant also claimed that when he contacted the driver of the truck in which his items were being transported, he demanded extra money and threatened to destroy the items if he did not pay up. The Delhi Police have arrested a man on charges of masturbating in front of a girl in moving bus here.The girl, who was travelling from Kapasheda to Vasant Kunj, said that the man stood in front of the women row, where she was sitting and started masturbating in front of her.The accused continued with his act, even when the girl shouted at him. Indonesia set to free Bali Nine drug smuggler Lawrence
The first member of the "Bali Nine" heroin-trafficking gang to be released from prison is expected to leave jail on Wednesday after serving 13 years, in a case that caused a huge diplomatic rift between Indonesia and Australia. Renae Lawrence, 41, the only female member of the group, was arrested in 2005 when authorities caught her with 2.6 kilogrammes (5.7 pounds) of heroin strapped to her body as she tried to fly out of the international airport on the holiday island of Bali. She was initially handed a life term, but her sentence was later reduced to 20 years and then further cut due to good behaviour. It was not immediately clear what time she would be released from Bali's Bangli prison, but officials said she may be freed around midday (0400 GMT). "Renae Lawrence is in a healthy condition. Youth gets 7 years in jail for raping minor
A special POCSO court here has sentenced a 26-year-old man to seven years in prison for abducting and raping a 15-year-old girl in 2014. In the judgement pronounced on Tuesday, Additional District Judge Ram Sudh Singh found Virender Kumar guilty of offences under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court also slapped Kumar with a fine of Rs 30,000 and ordered that half the amount will go to the victim. On July 7, 2014, Kumar had abducted the victim from her house in Basayet village, when her parents were away, and raped her, prosecution lawyer Pushpender Malik said.
Youth attacked over money dispute in UP
A 22-year-old man sustained serious injuries as he was allegedly attacked by a group of men at his residence in Jolly village here over a money dispute, police said on Wednesday. Israr Ansari was rushed to a hospital after the attack on Tuesday, they said. Circle Officer Ram Mohan Sharma said a case has been registered against five persons. The accused are absconding and a manhunt has been launched to nab them. According to a complaint lodged by Ansari's father, Sher Ali, some people barged into their house and attacked his son with sharp weapons over a money dispute. Earlier on Tuesday, Ansari was thrashed with shoes during a meeting of the panchayat, Ali alleged.
325 inmates from Muzaffarnagar jail to be shifted to Noida prison
A total of 325 inmates lodged in the overcrowded district jail here, including lifers and long-term inmates, will be shifted to a prison in Noida, an official said on Wednesday. The district authorities recommended this to reduce the burden on the prison, Jail Superintendent A K Saxena said. Over 2,000 inmates from two districts -- Muzaffarnagar and Shamli -- are lodged in the prison here against the capacity of 870, he said. Saxena said a confirmation from the jail department headquarters in Lucknow is awaited.
Man enters insanity plea in killing of mother at hospital
A man accused of killing his mother last year in a New Hampshire hospital intensive care unit has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Fifty-year-old Travis Frink appeared in Grafton County Superior Court on Tuesday. A judge accepted his plea and committed him to the state prison's secure psychiatric unit for up to five years. Frink initially pleaded not guilty to shooting 70-year-old Pamela Ferriere multiple times. Lawyers considering an insanity defense wrote in court documents Frink told police he was taken from the womb and subjected to a "sadistic scientific experiment." Frink also told police he had not taken medication nor slept in a long time before the September 2017 shooting at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. Frink has been hospitalized in the past and diagnosed with bipolar and schizoaffective disorder.
After acquittal, man releases magazine written behind bars
A 27-year-old man, who was recently acquitted by the Himachal Pradesh High Court in an alleged rape case, has released a monthly magazine named 'Competition Companion' for those preparing for competitive examinations.Vikram Singh Khimta, a resident of Mandhol village in Shimla district served two years in jail in an alleged rape case. Khimta said that the case against him was fabricated."I was hopeful for justice from the Indian judicial system. On November 3, I was acquitted by the High Court of Himachal Pradesh. I was punished by session court under certain circumstances on September 30, 2016, for a crime which I never did.
